The hurdy gurdy must have been a masterpiece of medieval engineering. I can imagine them taking the same care of an instrument like this as we would a priceless guitar, or set of drums.

You'd be surprised to hear that after a brief period of popularity with rich folk for being a masterpiece of engineering, I read somewhere that these instruments had a bad reputation because homeless prostitutes would often play them for cash because they were easy to learn.

In the beginning it was. But then it became a very common instrument and even beggars could afford one. That's when it changed from a sophisticated instrument for the nobility and clergy to a common instrument for the lower classes.

As the snow falls, cast white flakes against the grey sky, a lone figure trudges on. Through freezing mud and mire, to reach the hearth of his heart's desire. The fell shadows swaying, the wind shifting the pines. The lone wolf and it's crying. Still our hero marches on. Freezing fingers that no gauntlets could keep warm from winter's cold biting maw. He keeps on carrying what little he has to keep him warm: the fire inside & strength of his limbs are all that remain to move the metal, the weight of war, the cold, hard steel of a knight's attire. The ember inside, his heart's desire,...

I lived in a house with a man who played bagpipes and the hurdy gurdy. His wife played and sang everything else, the kids and cats ran around underfoot, and the other tenant was a bagpipe maker. You were really careful where you sat, but otherwise it was a happy time and place. This is much more serious than we ever got, and this ... pipe organ with strings ... is magnificent. The Witcher gazes upon the wind-swept wildlands of a forgotten land his swords sheathed weathered and worn an extension of his soul anchored to his back... The wind picks gently and the rain rolls over untouched beauty, he slowly raises his face eyes closed allowing the water to make its way down his scarred face. The pitter patter of drops breaking on a look which tells a thousand stories from a thousand journeys…

I can't even... it's just so beautiful. My two favorite instruments are bagpipes and violin. This has the drone of the bagpipes while having that sad, string sound of the violin. I just love it. Thank you so much for your art. It inspires me.

I have never seen a hurdy gurdy player use that back and forth motion on the handle, but it makes perfect sense. It's like he's bowing with the parchment wheel. I would love to know the brand of HG he is using.

As a trumpet and piano player I think they are switching the direction to separate the notes. With a trumpet, you can do it by using your tongue to stop the air, then pulling your tongue back in, with a tap-like motion. On piano since all the keys are already separate you just press them at different times. In musical terms, if you didn’t separate the notes, then you would be slurring them all together.

I can imagine this instrument being accompanied by a hammered dulcimer....absolutely beautiful as a solo piece, but doing the lead with a back-up has possibilities. Thank You for introducing me to music I never knew existed.

I love the way you turn the handle back and forth in time with the music. I've never seen the hurdy gurdy played like that before, it's so much better than the usual continuous sound it produces. Where did you learn that please?

I have never heard it played that way either; adds a new dimension to the sound which can be a bit "mechanical" when all played in the same direction of rotation. Sounds similar to the Nickelharpa when played this way (unsurprisingly).

It’s a common method for those who affirm homosexual special rights. But even today they don’t realise the local facts and collusion invalidated all who avoid reality of pronouns.

Aside from that, not all hurdy gurdy's can actually go backwards. This is probably also part of it maybe.

I have a hurdy gurdy and have been playing for about 8 years. I've never seen one played that way, either. Guess who's going to start working with this method? I love how the turning movements create a rhythm overlay to the music. This piece is beautiful...really showcases the musical power of a hurdy gurdy!

This music resonates with the grief in my soul. It helps me to feel what words cannot express. It pulls my mind to the reality of what is happening that I have tried to escape. This music helps me to feel the pain, it holds a tune to the mourning.
