Dark Cloud 2 Fishing - 176 CM Kaji

It took quite a while, but I finally managed to catch a Kaji over 172 CM on the PS4 version. The only glitch I used was putting lures on a fishing rod since I don't like using the lure rod. That glitch doesn't change how big the fish get, so I don't see anything wrong with using it. Not only that, but Kaji caught with the lure rod usually face the wrong direction which results in them looking smaller than they really are.
One more thing, I easily caught this without ever leveling up the rod's Strength, which the game claims is "Necessary for reeling in the big ones". So I have to ask, does anyone know what this stat does? I'm convinced it doesn't do anything. Some guides I've seen claim that upgrading it increases the speed that fish are reeled in, but it clearly doesn't.
But I know what the other stats do, so I'll show them here since even after 16 years, I can't find any guides accurately describing these stats:
Flight - How far you can cast, the farther you cast, the larger the fish can be
Resilience - Upgrading this makes the tension bar fill slower
Grip - A weaker version of flight, upgrading it lets you cast slightly farther
Luck - Increases the chance of fish biting, but has no effect on fish sizes

Wait, even YOU don't like using the Lure Rod? I've always hated using it, as I could never get the rhyme or reason to making a fish bite with it, it always felt like a fluke. Seeing how deep you've gotten in this game with finding glitches and tricks, I gotta ask: how DOES the lure rod function?

After casting the lure, the fish you're going to catch is chosen the moment the rod's controls appear at the bottom of the screen. There are three 4 Byte Signed memory addresses (Cheat Engine Addresses Shown) that determine when the fish bites if the game didn't choose the value FF (nothing) as the fish: 20378508 - Bite Timer, Starting value: Between 100 and at least 236 203785A4 - Input Timer, Starting value: 0 203785A8 - How much the bite timer will go down, Starting value: 0 The input timer starts at 0 and counts down into the negatives until you move the rod or reel in slightly by pressing X, which always increases the input timer to between +0.5 and +2 seconds. When the input timer has a value greater than 0, all inputs that move the rod, or reeling in slightly with X will increase the value of the 3rd address by as little as 2 or as much as 11, but if you move the rod and/or reel in at a speed faster than 10 inputs per second, some inputs won't count. Let's say your inputs bring address 3's value to 105. Let the input timer drop back into the negatives by not pressing anything for up to 2 seconds, then move the rod or reel in with X once. With the input timer in the negatives, the bite timer will drop by address 3's value, which is 105, then address 3's value will return to 0. Simply move the rod/reel in more to bring that value back up, and repeat. When the bite timer drops below 0, the fish will bite. If you miss the fish, the game will immediately choose another fish, and it's possible to get another bite if you didn't reel in too much, but if the game picks value FF, you won't get another bite until you cast again.

@@pokemonfan4000 Just in case I'm confusing something, moving the lure rod increases the Input Timer (address 2) TO +0.5~+2.0 or BY that much? And while the Input Timer is positive, any additional inputs will then increase Address 3? And then after you've sufficiently raised Address 3, you just need to wait for the Input Timer to count down to a negative value and then performing an input at that point will cause the Bite Timer (Address 1) to be reduced by Address 3's value? So could you just hook a fish by moving the stick left and right (at most) 118 times, waiting 2 seconds, then moving again? (Considering a max bite timer of 236 and a minimum address 3 increase per input of 2) I guess finally, what causes the game to pick FF (nothing) as the fish's value? Just bad luck, or is that only brought on by failing to catch a fish with the initial cast?

@@Schrammbledeggs From what pokemonfan4000 said this doesn't seem possible, since sometimes the game decides that you won't catch a fish on that cast and there isn't anything you can do except reel and re-cast.

That's one hell of a fish! Oh I so miss old games that did replayability well. These days most games are just done after you've completed them storywise, while games like DC2 you can just go play spheda, fish, level up monster badges and it has its charm as an original dungeon crawling game. Love it

Wow that's crazy maxed stats on the fishing rod except strength and it was still hard to reel in. Is it even possible to catch a bigger fish than that? I remember your older Kaji catching videos from like 9 or 10 years ago. I'm still amazed that you find new glitches even after doing this for 10+ years it's remarkable.

i always thought strength increases the amount the fish gets pulled in whenever you press x. so like..a low strength would only pull it 0.1 distance while a high strength might pull it 0.2 or more. . .
