Since ancient times, the Catholic Church has wanted to keep track of time and date for holy days like Easter and Christmas, which led to a strong interest in astronomy. The Church even created the Gregorian Calendar, named after Pope Gregory XIII. As technology advanced, the Vatican remained interested, and these telescopes and observatories were used by Catholic universities.

But why did they change the calander to begin with while it was being use for many centuries? Example In Ethiopia, the birth year of Jesus Christ is recognized as seven or eight years later than the Gregorian, or “Western” calendar, which of course was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582. The Roman Church adjusted its calculation in 500 CE, while the Ethiopian Orthodox Church opted to stick to the ancient dates. Till these day, not only in Ethiopia but in coptic church all over the world are still celebrating Easter, Christmas and all other religious different than Gregorian.

No, they didn't. The telescope in the Vatican Observatory in Arizona is called "Alice P. Lennon Telescope" named after one of the top donors of the building of this observatory.
