If you liked the Da Vinci Code, I cannot recommend enough Foucault's Pendulum by Eco. It precedes the Da Vinci code by some years, but explores very similar subjects; secret societies, ancient rituals and ceremony and esoterica. What is great about it is that it is more an exploration into the nature of conspiracy and the human ability to infer any number of connections between disparate data if they are told there are connections. It is also a very funny, satirical look on works such as the Da Vinci code and is packed with history. When Eco was asked about Dan Brown and his novels he said - "I invented him. He shares my characters' fascinations - the world conspiracy of Rosicrucians, Masons, and Jesuits. The role of the Knights Templar. The hermetic secret. The principle that everything is connected. I suspect Dan Brown might not even exist.". Highly recommend.

I liked that it made me question the original high tale. I grew up in a cult I call vanilla ISIS, and it's beaten into you that the Bible is the honest truth, despite being written hundreds of years later and translated a dozen times, so it was refreshing to even think of a variation. Like anything there's 3 sides, with the correct one somewhere in the middle.

"Tony Robinson" was the name of a made up stand up comedian who played the comedy store in the 1980's, Nifty Slovach in reality is woman, but had to have a sex change in 1985 when Dig!, the precursor to Time Team became popular.

This whole programme was incredibly salty, and just goes to show that there is nothing like professional jealousy. The Da Vinci Code has only ever been a fictional romp, and criticising a fictional story is just laughable. Dan Brown's wife (who did a lot of the research) was a keen gamer, and obviously had played Broken Sword, and Gabriel Knight 3, as these games are so similar - even down to the female sidekick. People hate the DVC book because it was so successful. Still, nice the TR can sup off the crumbs left by the book's legacy.

I read "The DaVinci Code" as a fiction book and was very entertained. I had read Greek and Norse mythology when I was a teen and I didn't believe them to be true, but a glimpse into what some people in the past believed. Until proven, I consider this book to be a modern mythology but very entertaining, IMO.

I read the Bible as a fictional story. Found it to be entertaining. Just the account of the great flood. Do you realize the amount of water needed to cover every mountain on earth? Where did it come from? Where did it go? then we have 2 of every animal on earth from countries not ever herd of or known at the time. Not to mention it would be imposable to fit on such a small boat. To repopulate the world from just a few people? We would all have the same genes. All be suspectable to the same disease. All be the same color. Thats a few of the so many impossibilities.

And allways i find something oppened to interpretation or something that i didnt have linked. I want to say that bcz the 1st thing you should take in consideration about the bibble is to not take in consideration the literal read. This is a rule, and just by knowing the whole scope of the bible, we can fullfill the gaps by handling well the Literal part. Plus, would be needed a knowldge on history and geography and geopolitics to solve this part. Thats why your " read by the fictional way " cant be taken as true.. How could you be fair with it, if you have knowldge that surpass it ( science ). Keep in mind that Da Vinci lived 1500 years after the life of Jesus. So even though he may have created a painting called the Last Supper, it can no way accurately depict what happened back then, nor can it accurately show what the people looked like. Its not like Da Vinci was there in person and took a picture of Jesus with a camera. In fact, everyone in Da Vinci's painting look like typical Europeans, when Jesus and his followers would have all had darker skin, like everyone from Middle East regions.

Actually that was a trend in European, and especially Italian, art at the time - it wasn't focusing on realism but rather to portray Jesus and the Jesus story with the cultural references of the time - to put a contemporary interpretation on it (contemporary for them back then). We still do this today in the arts eg. Shakespearean plays in modern dress etc. The goal is to make it more relatable in the modern context I'm not disagreeing with you though re eye witnesses

The Knights Templar were taken down by Phillip of France, who not only owed them money he did not wish to pay back, but also wanted their own private fortune. The church excommunicated them and allowed their arrest, torture and execution, not because the charges against them were true, but because the Pope was afraid of Phillip. Their treasure was from fees, but many of them were younger sons who brought endowments to the order; similar to a woman’s family paying a dowry to the convent when she enters as a novitiate.

I actually just tried to see who the pope was at the time and a bit difficult to find. I recently hear that different search engines give different information!! And I believe it. Anyway I knew it was Clement and indeed it was Clement V. There was something or other about the prior pope having died suddenly and looks like it was timely for Philip's plan. I will tell you that I may have read it in The Bloodline of the Holy Grail by Laurence Gardiner. Now Holy Blood, Holy Grail was just amazing but The Bloodline of the Holy Grail, for me anyway, took it to another level, so I suspect that was where I read it. Foucaults Pendulum by Umberto Eco. I’ve always referred to it as the thinking mans da vinci code. But written in ‘88. It’s actually there at the start in his box of books. Mainly about the Templars. Other theories can be introduced once all known truth is applied. If greater than 10% probability cannot be determined among over a dozen possibilities, or 30% among seven or less, or 60% among two, then the group can introduce other theories. Throwing down a 101 of a reading list including more than one fiction read to introduce a newb to a think tank is not real. It is likely this 'history communicator' took ALL their reading lists, including the advanced, and put them in one bin for dramatic effect. Also look for bias fallacy in nonfiction inspired directly by fiction. The author will 100% reference the fiction, so reading of the fiction is necessary, but always remember that it is full of pretty lies; lies you will not fall for. You must research every claim, listen to every detractor, give audience to absurdity. The truth is felt as much as it is sought.

With fiction, an author can use elements of truth cleverly intertwined/disguised to entice the reader to find out more of how the bigger story pieces 'fit' together - teasing, calling out to curious minds. If you read "Holy Blood, Holy Grail," one of the first things they say in the book is that the evidence they have gathered cannot be dealt with by a historical or judicial method of evaluation, or any one of several types of investigation. So, the authors say that they use the "novelist's way on investigation" where you can take any single item of evidence and relate it to any other piece in any way you can think of.. In other words, you can make it up as you go. That in itself should be a loud enough alarm to realize that the book is basically put together out of speculations by the authors and that there is no valid historical research in it at all. And, of course, don't forget that the Priory of Sion, which figures heavily in both "Holy Blood, Holy Grail" and "The Da Vinci Code" turned out to be the product of a French man in the mid-20 Century who concocted that whole story and manufactured "evidence" for it, just so he could claim that he himself, Pierre Plantard, was related to these historical figures!

Here's something that I'm surprised they didn't mention... Les Saintes Maries de la Mer. There is a church by that name built on the southern coast of France at the place that is said to be where Mary Magdalene and Mary (mother) landed, bringing with them 'the holy grail'. You're quite right. The painting is just an artistic impression. Da Vinci is free to express his idea through the painting. I would readily believe it if he was there as a witness at the last supper. Sadly he was not. It's beyond me too, to draw anything from the painting. What we should look for is how the "canvass" was divided, how the grouping of elements is made to achieve balance in the division, the colors, shading, and contrast. etc. Besides all the subjects are caucasians, contrary to what we know now that is not what the people looked like back then in that particular place and time.

Exactly. Da Vinci lived approx. 1500 years after Christ. How would he know anything outside the NT Gospels from that distance in time? He may well have had his ideas and beliefs, and the painting might give us pointers as to what Da Vinci believed. The problem is that right in the front of the book Dan Brown boldly states "Fact | All descriptions of artwork, architecture, documents, and secret rituals in this novel are accurate." The problem is that he tries to have it both ways and takes a motte-and-bailey approach: when people point out how wrong his book is as a matter of fact, he resorts to saying it's just a novel; but he's also the person who, asked on television "How much of this is based on reality in terms of things that actually occurred?", gives the answer "Absolutely all of it." I guess that's like how my novel about Abraham Lincoln's trip with Henry VIII to the Great Pyramid at Giza in the seventieth century B.C. is "based on reality in terms of things that actually occurred": Abraham Lincoln really existed, Henry VIII was a real person, you can go see the Great Pyramid yourself, and there really was a 70th century B.C.-but I combine them into something that is extremely unlikely.

John was the youngest of the apostles, and Greek philosophy, along with it's tradition of the beardless youth at the foot of his master, was super in-vogue. And look to Jesus' left: Phillip doesn't have a beard either, but no one's ever suggested he's a woman. And soft, feminine features were usually associated with virtue, while sterner, masculine ones were associated with moral failings. Look at Thomas amd Peter's faces. It's probably not a coincidence that the denier and the doubter have the most masculine faces. The most female face of the whole set-up is the study of Christ's face Da Vinci did to prepare for the fresco. It's so feminine it could be the Mona Lisa's twin, with not a chin whisker to be seen. In the final painting, Jesus' beard is badly dabbed on the bottom of his chin like a last-minute fix. Da Vinci might have done it beardless like his original drawing and the monks who hovered over his every move for 3 years maybe got upset so he changed it.

'Hello Megan, I've come to visit for tea with you and your family.' I was more than shocked. I didn't even know how he discovered where I lived away from the Convent. Afterward, he said goodbye to father and was leaving, then there was another surprise. 'Megan, would you walk me to the car?' Our home was on a huge street block, with a massive garden, and the street couldn't be seen from the house. We arrived at the car, and he got in. He started the engine, then.. 'Well I guess you'd better get a birthday kiss.' Surprise. Reluctantly, nervously, and hesitantly, I leaned down, presenting the side of my face. Suddenly he reached out, grabbed my face, turned it around, and put his tongue half way down my throat. 'See you back at school' he said, and happily drove off. It took me what seemed like forever, to stop sobbing and shaking and get up off the kerb. My future should have been as an actress. Once in the house, I cheerily said I was going to study, and went to my room, where I sobbed into my pillow for another half hour. That priest made my life a panic stricken hell until I left the Convent. He would wink, blow kisses, and give knowing smiles. My grades suffered. No, it's silly to think there's some kind of magical grail in the first place. Leonardo in the last supper is obvious that he has hidden many secrets, I have been living in Milan for 30 years and obviously I have been to see that fresco .. and as many know it is full of codes, there is an "extra" hand and in particular it is the hand that he is holding a knife and pointing it at Judas, he is on the left looking at the fresco .. also the position of the loaves on the table is not a randomness .. the table is the musical score and the loaves are the musical notes, they create a melody sweet when they are played, the face of MARIA is sweet and undoubtedly feminine, even the face of the christ is not so divine .. the three openings behind "the three doors" are a clear reference to a very ancient culture .. those same three openings yes can be found in many other ancient monuments, always having the same proportions, there are the 12 stones of paradise on the clothes .. the positions and attitudes of all those present represent the constellations of the zodiac every character expresses his own figure .. to name one: Judas is Scorpio, in the position of Mars, an unfaithful sign that represents disintegration and death; his fingers are contracted like the scorpion's pincers ready to attack. Johann Wolfgang Goethe fell in love with the Upper Room and wrote an essay not by chance ..

Around 15:30: Chretien de Troyes made up the Holy Grail -- yep. They could've just asked a scholar of Medieval French literature, and saved themselves the whole program. But then we would've missed out on a lot of interesting scenery, I suppose. Around the same time, Robinson says that Le conte du gral is the "first novel ever written." No, no, no. There are novels thousands of years old -- novels written in prose, such as The Golden Ass by Apuleius and the Satyricon by Petronius -- unlike Le conte du graal, which is written in verse. Well, nobody's perfect. Other than saying that Chretien de Troyes was history's first novelist, I didn't notice a lot of huge mistakes in this video. And whether you call him a novelist or not, Chretien is an interesting writer. A Hell of a lot better than Dan Brown, that's for sure. And he didn't claim that his work was non-fiction. He didn't start any of his poems with "Fact," followed by a list of assertions which were not facts.

Really the Holy Grail legend is just like any cult fiction story - people continue to rework it for generations (especially if it's left unfinished - kinda like Dune). But personally I like the idea of the Grail in terms of a quest - seeking is important; it's like life - the destination isn't nearly so important as the journey (or the quest you may say). I think the MOVIE (Davinci Code) could've been an even better sell than it was - if it had capitalized more on locations than the drama of the characters (berk, was it me or was this demonstrably over-acted? Tom Hanks I'm ashamed of you); should've concentrated on the tourist potential that the plot allows - could've got more sponsorship too. If you want a truthful Catholic church conspiracy I recommend a little movie called The Statement,(Michael Caine, Tilda Swinson, Jeremy Northam), not that the plot is true but the conspiracy is. You get all that plus great acting, beautiful scenery AND a very interesting character study - highly underrated movie!

The girlfriend owned extensive property in Watermael-Boitsfort, and this is where Plantard, whose Priory of Sion hoax started the Grail leg, lived.

I almost wish novels like this came with a warning label: I have someone in my life, already mentally disturbed, who has restructured their life and identity around the religious revelations Dan Brown's "brave exposure of the hidden truth" has led them to. I've even showed them interviews where Brown himself talks about making up the codex messages, and they say "well of course he has to pretend it's not real or the Illuminati from the Vatican will disappear him..." Not everyone can distinguish this type of fiction writing from reality. Of course none of this is Dan Brown's fault: it's the schizophrenia fault, but when someone believes they are the reincarnation of Mary Magdalene, and the second coming will happen when they follow the Priory of Scion's trail to their former body, because they read The Da Vinci Code...it's hard to not be just a touch irritated with Mr. Brown. Just a smidge.

Unfortunately, judging from this, the co-author of that book seems to take it as fact. Which annoys me more than anything. If Dan Brown or this chap want to write a book that is fine. Until you try to sell it as fact. And you can see it here. When confronted with the fact that there is no evidence that the cathars were in possession of any kind of secret, his reaction and response says it all. "Well the inqusition went to great lengths to wipe them out, that means they must have been in possession of a secret". As much as I love Tony I think he missed the mark in his closing statements I dont think that the take away of the book was to know its untrue like a romance novel I think that it did what a good book should do it sparked a public debate it got people talking about things that had long gone stagnant and slipped into the slow death of dogma. How many people watched this with little knowledge of further church knowledge and how many left here and went on to other sources to learn more. That's an amazing feat for any author whichever side your on you gotta respect that...

And Dan Brown wasn't even original in the 20th century when turning grail fantasies into a murder mystery novel. A far superior, and far better one is Umberto Eco's "Foucault's Pendulum" which predates it by several years. Far less known, because the advertising budget was far smaller, and no movie was made out of it, it's far better written.

jwenting Foucault's Pendulum was good. Dan Brown's book was such a rip off of Holy Blood, Holy Grail of which Eco's book is supposed to debunk. I knew the ending of Brown's book before I was even half way through it... I just kept thinking this is such a rip off... how Baigent, Leigh, and Lincoln failed to get royalties out of Brown is beyond me, especially as Brown admits that some of the characters in his book are anagrams of their names. I would be well pissed off if it had happened to me.

I had read 'Holy Blood Holy Grail' and MANY years later read 'The Da Vinci Code' I actually checked to see if Dan Brown had anything to do with the first book, because I thought he must be one of the authors who had written a novelization of it. Then of course when I found he was not connected with the original authors I thought: "Well I hope they get some money out him because it's a the same bloody story." Anyway this documentary was fantastic because it gave me lots of facts, and joined the dots as to how the whole 'affair' came about. I'm enjoying being a sceptic for the first time in my life. :) Also read 'Foucault's Pendulum' now that's a real work of literature. *However I am with Tony on Mary/John in 'The Last Supper' - that isn't a male, it is most definitely a female.

Nymeria Meliae Read the biblical scholar (and agnostic: he has no religious axe to grind) Bart D. Ehrman's book, Did Jesus Exist? about the historical Jesus. In fact, there is a good deal of historical evidence, archaeological and documentary, to prove the existence of an historical figure behind the various traditions and stories. Part of the fun of the book is seeing Ehrman (a Princeton scholar) demolish the numerous counter arguments against Jesus' existence.
