DARK SHADOWS (TV SERIES) Vampire Barnabas - His Realization

In 1795, Barnabas discovers the consequences of Angelique's curse and now realizes what being one of the living dead actually entails. He tells Ben Stokes about his need for blood and the loathing he has for his condition. This original, afternoon supernatural soap opera drama was a far cry from the Johnny Depp fantasy, comedy film version.

Nothing compares or ever will compare to the original soap with the original cast. This 1795 origin story should have been made into the two original Dark Shadows movies in 1970 and 1971. The two that were released back in the day cashed in on the popularity but did not capture the spirit of this very unique show and unique story of how an innocent man, because of youthful indiscretion, wound up a vampire by a vengeful witch (a LITERAL witch!) Classic. The remakes aren't even worthy of discussion.

These 1795 episodes were the best of the series. How he got the curse, I first watched this show after school as a young kid in the late 1960s and then saw the whole series again on sci-fi channel in the early 2000s.

This was really gruesome for a TV show at the time. And especially for an afternoon soap. At the very most, other shows might have shown a slight trickle of blood from one side of the mouth. But here we see Barnabas with his entire mouth slobbering blood. Running down his chin, and covering his throat and front vest. I wonder how they got it past the censors.

It would've made more sense if they had blood around his mouth and dripping down his chin everytime he bit someone, and even showed his victim bleeding as he drank their blood, it would've made him seem even more like a vampire.

Just the fact that Dan Curtis thought enought to not tape over the last episodes like the other soap operas at that time and saved all the tapes.Today we are able to see every episode and the only soap opera to be as popular today as it was then.Many make light of its popularity but you should have been at the Devon Horse show that year when Jonathan Friday appearence drew over 200,000.fans.Enough Said.

Back in 1969 or so, as a latchkey kid I would come home from elementary school while my mother was still at work and first thing I'd do is put the TV on. Soon Dark Shadows would come on and I'd sit there on the couch with a blanket over my head while watching this scary show. It was only @ in the Afternoon, and still daylight outside, but no matter.... lol. I think I actually enjoyed getting scared by that show...the acting was that good! It was the only soap I use to really watch...and I loved it! Then soon... I would run outside and start to play with my friends until my Mom came home from work. Those days I often had to make my own TV dinners too, but our house was filled with love. It's not easy on a mother, having to raise up her son alone, but she did it! Somehow too.... I survived the terrors of Dark Shadows on TV.... and the Munster's, and the Adam's family....why? Well...compared to today's TV....they were tame by comparison. They all had father figures in the home...and somehow I think they helped to fill the hole that was in our family. You don't get even that much....out of television today. I'm glad I was a 60's kid and not a kid raised on today's wacko TV, with it's so-called family series that have no real father in the home. By the way... I too, love music. Here's a "Lockdown Music Video" we produced not long ago. Cheers ya all.... kzbin.info/www/bejne/g3q1qaGghMh_rZI

As time went on, Barnabas became a much neater consumer of "other people's blood". This scene was shocking to my ten year old self. I've always wondered how the untidy Barnabas got past the censors. Thanks for putting this scene up. Mr. Depp almost duplicates the look of Barnabas' first night munchies with much spillage upon his own cravat.

I saw the previews of the movie, and it told me that I didn't want to see it. However, I thought the 1990 remake wasn't bad, they seem to be trying to do the original justice. Ben Cross made a pretty good Barnabas, and they stuck to the original story line, I would have liked to seen a completed version of it.

Hah, the old SciFi Channel logo. Hehehe. Johnny Depp does such a job of copying Frid, that it's almost just flat-out mimicry. In a way it's impressive, but in another way it's TOO perfect. Depp just ended up trying to copy the original so closely, that it comes off as a joke, & I don't mean the intentional humor of the movie, either. Nothing beats the original...Frid was the ONLY Barnabas!! R.I.P.
@josetteandres
@josetteandres 3 жыл бұрын
Well, with Depp, they added some of Jack Sparrow's personality. The Tim Burton version of Barnabas was very obvious about being a vampire, where as Frid's version did everything he could to keep his vampirism a secret.

God, when I discovered the TV show and saw Barnabas's sensitive side, I was immediately smitten. Last year around my 18th birthday, I had a dream that he came into my bedroom in the middle of the night. He stood over me, bared his fangs, then bit me and drank my blood. Best dream I've ever had the pleasure of having. I'm currently trying to make myself have a similar dream.

I read hundreds of very romantic and sentimental comments on youtube from Women who loved Frid and his sensitivity and his deep felt emotions that he channeled into his character. What saddens me, breaks my heart is that all, all these hundreds of ladies, DS fans, they all had the freedom to openly love and too marry who they wanted and too share that love openly without shame. Whereas actors like Jonathan Frid, Louis Edmonds, Joel Crothers, Craig Slocum, Keith Prentice and Christoper Bernau from Dark Shadows and the TV actor that someone down in the comments also mentioned, Richard Chamberlain as well, none of these gentlemen were allowed to legally have those loving relationships and marriages like all the Straight Women in the comments were allowed to have. All these Gentle men and gentle souls also had deeply felt romantic feelings in their lives but were not allowed to share them back then when it was still illegal to be Gay. That saddens me.

The tim burton version wasn't a comedy, the trailer is not the film, the trailer has all of the funny moments in it. The film was dark, violent, fun and gothic. If you're a dark shadows fan, go watch the darn film, its a fantastic retelling of the show and the film wasn't silly.

I got talked into seeing the Depp movie...I don't like that they made a parody out of it, although it wasn't entirely comedy & had some real violence in it. I just am not a Burton fan at all, and even though Depp put all his effort into it, there just is no duplicating the feel & charm of the original. While they did stay close to the original story, you just can't cram everything about the series into 2 hours or less. If anything, hopefully the movie exposed new fans to the original series.

Johnny Depp, in all honesty, is a good actor. In the films he'd done so far, he played best in the ones which were dramas, fantasies or bios. Whenever they remade the dramas as comedies, I was done. Dark Shadows was definitely one which flopped. IMO. I say to all of those producers, leave the classics ALONE!!! That's how they should always stand...

I am a fan of DS from just about the time Barnabas appeared in 1967. I must say I have in the last year seen the great and underrated pre-Barnabas episodes with Diana Millay as the "Phoenix" Laura Collins. But the essence of DS has to be the acting and the writing-if you are going to write a comedy-parody a la Depp-Burton, then leave me out.

The trailers did not do the film justice, but the movie did not do the soap justice. The movie was good for a Tim Burton film, but it did lack the melodrama that the soap had and wished they used. It's still a decent movie, so go see it and then decide. I never trust trailers, the movie had funny moments, but it did have some dark stuff that I did like. I think it would have been better as an R rated movie so they could get away with more darker elements like Sleepy Hollow did.

The Dark Shadows movie was fine in its own way and I enjoyed it, but it was a very different creature. It wasn't Dark Shadows in the true sense. I felt the TV series in 1990 or 1991 was a pretty faithful representation of Dark Shadows and it was more than 20 years removed from the original series. If they could do it, I hoped Tim Burton and Johnny Depp could. They are all fine in their own way.

The Burton/Depp movie was meant as a parody or lampoon of the series and in that they succeeded. I recall the 1990-91 series and had hopes for it, but they were unable to keep such a stellar cast for long. How long could they expect to maintain having Ben Cross, Barbara Steele and Michael Weiss?

@Scott Denny: So? Is that the ONLY one you noticed? Because - there were a LOT more than that. Like, in various episodes: doors that wouldn't open, or doors that opened back after being "shut;" walls that shook when someone shut a door; candles that went out to soon, or candles that wouldn't go out when they should; fake tombstones that fell, or got knocked, over; crew members visible in the background in some shots; crew, and sometimes cast, members walking across an "empty" set which was actually being filmed for the end credits to be shown over; boom mic, and in some cases the boom mic AND its handle, visible in some shots; actors "going up on" ( forgetting ) their lines; and MANY, MANY more.

@@robertc.1958 I read somewhere that the cast would voice their concerns to Dan Curtis about all the 'bloopers' and he would tell them 'Don't worry about it, this will only be shown one time'.
