In 1795, Barnabas Collins is reluctant to take another victim, yet a young woman goads him to remain with her, which results in her own demise. The Johnny Depp fantasy comedy movie version of Dark Shadows, is quite removed from this dramatic original supernatural TV soap opera.

As a vampire, Barnabas Collins looked scariest in the 1795 storyline. This is made all the more impressive when you consider that, at this point, DS was videotaped in color since August 1967. It might be the period clothing and hairdo that did the trick. Second scariest was the earliest episodes when he terrorized Maggie Evans.

I read hundreds of very romantic and sentimental comments on youtube from Women who loved Frid and his sensitivity and his deep felt emotions that he channeled into his character. What saddens me, breaks my heart is that all, all these hundreds of ladies, DS fans, they all had the freedom to openly love and too marry who they wanted and too share that love openly without shame. Whereas actors like Jonathan Frid, Louis Edmonds, Joel Crothers, Craig Slocum, Keith Prentice and Christoper Bernau from Dark Shadows and the TV actor that someone down in the comments also mentioned, Richard Chamberlain as well, none of these gentlemen were allowed to legally have those loving relationships and marriages like all the Straight Women in the comments were allowed to have. All these Gentle men and gentle souls also had deeply felt romantic feelings in their lives but were not allowed to share them back then when it was still illegal to be Gay. That saddens me.

Yes, you are right they were all gay. They were born during a time when being gay was never spoken of. It must have been hard to live the lives that they lived. Although Richard Chamberlain did live with his partner for 34 years in Hawaii, and separated from him in 2010. At least he did have a loving relationship for many decades. Ms. L. Churchill

I mean no disrespect, but I had no idea any of the actors on DS were gay, except I'd heard that Joe Crothers was gay. I didn't find out about Frid being gay until after he sadly passed away. I did, however get the chance of a lifetime to meet him in person in Crawfordsville, Indiana in 1999, and all I can say was he was exceptional, very gracious, very much a gentleman and he said something to me and gave me a wink and smile, but its been so long ago, that I've forgotten what he told me in the autograph line after the show. I was so nervous and excited to have met him and got my picture with him. I had planned on taking my late Fiance to see him in September of 2001, and sadly that never came to pass. Regardless, they are all beautiful people and it's sad they couldn't live the way they wanted to. But it was the times they lived in, for one. Secondly, it wasn't acceptable in their times and probably had a lot to do with society back in the day.

@@EB1878 I, too, didn't find out that Frid and Louis Edmonds (Roger) were both gay. The only indication that I had was when I was looking up his bio online one day and I saw a picture of him and Louis Edmonds at Fire Island beach in NY, which has been a male gay beach since 1920. At that point, I knew. When I watched DS as a teenager, that never crossed my mind, but back in those days, it was never spoken of. Ms. L. Churchill

Grandma used to watch this! Wow! As one of the pre-adolesents who ran home to watch this. Kudos. Barnabas was it! He had the turmoil of conscience going on. Why they ended up with. Reunion of DS. Barnabas saved a dying soap opera.

I had almost the entire series (missing the Leviathan episodes), since that was my least favorite because it was too long, slow and kinda dull to me). I still have yet to purchase the DVDs myself. I will always enjoy the original series. Barnabas is my favorite! 🙂
