Birmingham is one of the biggest cities in the United Kingdom, and it is also one of the biggest economies in the country having many industries and sectors actively involved in its economic output. As a result of this, Birmingham is increasingly becoming a major hotspot for those who wish to relocate for a better life. And obviously, Birmingham provides several opportunities for people of all levels. However, with the numerous opportunities that Birmingham provides, it still has its dark sides that many don't know about Birmingham. Many think it is all rosy over there. And in this piece, we provide you with information on what you need to know about the dark side of Birmingham.
Homelessness
One of the dark sides of Birmingham that many people have not come to terms with is the issue of homelessness. Homelessness is a serious issue in the city of Birmingham; However, it is a typical issue in most parts of the world with the same status and so it should not be surprising. That said, determining the exact number of homeless individuals in Birmingham may be difficult because of the transient nature of homelessness, and the work of many organizations and local authorities involved in addressing the problem. However, because of the influx of newbies into the city, the number of homeless people is steadily increasing as more people compete for scarce resources. This has consequently driven the prices of house rents higher and the cost of acquiring a house hire. Also, issues like unemployment that is a result of more influx of workforce into the city have led to an increase in the number of homeless persons in the city because many are unemployed and unable to pay for house rent. And this is why it is common to see rough sleeping in the city. Rough sleeping describes a scenario where an individual sleeps in public spaces such as streets, parks, and doorways. It is one of the most visible forms of homelessness. Nevertheless, efforts have been made to provide emergency shelter, outreach services, and support to those living on the streets.
Public transport is not reliable
Another dark and hidden side of Birmingham that you will not hear about is the public transport system. This might come as a shock to many who think Birmingham has a good transport system. Of course, they do not lie, Birmingham is known to have a public transport system but as good as it may seem to many, it is not reliable. This is true when you ask people inhabiting the city to give you a firsthand experience of the city's public transport system. This unreliability has led to the decline of the use of buses for commuting within Birmingham over the past decade, this reduction is a substantial reduction of millions of bus rides. Driving this reduction is the concern of commuters regarding reliability, cost, safety, and antisocial behavior which is getting more prominent. Although city authorities are now eager to investigate the precise reasons behind the public's reluctance to use buses and address these concerns. But this does not take away the fact that at the moment, there is a reduction in the use of buses in the city which is fueled by perceived inefficiency in the minds of commuters.
How serious is this reduction? you might ask.
Recent data released showed that there were significant declines in the number of individuals making use of buses for commuting to Birmingham during the busy morning rush hours of between 7:30 am to 9:30 am. Approximately 30,000 people relied on buses for their work or school journeys a decade ago, but presently, that figure has dropped below 23,000. Also, the entire West Midlands region has experienced a substantial decrease in bus usage, with the number of journeys plunging from 318 million in 2009 to fewer than 260 million annually, according to the 2017 passenger trends survey conducted by Transport for West Midlands.
And so, if you are considering moving to Birmingham, you might have to consider the public transport system. Because what people are saying is not what you are thinking.

Im proud to be a Brummie but at the same time I am disgusted with the Birmingham of today. To witness our culture being destroyed by another culture is hard to take. Yet if I dare to speak out in defence of my heritage then I am labelled as Racist. Grooming gang's, Heroin importation and gang related knife crime is a part of their culture, fact.. Only recently I was asked why i was in a certain area of Birmingham where White People aren't welcome. How can this be right?? Especially when I lost an Auntie in the Birmingham Pub Bombings and my Great Uncle is still buried under the BSA after it was flattened by Hitler. My family have given their lives for this city only for now there's areas that i can't go. And that's the real dark side of Birmingham!!!

I grew up in Antrobus Road, Handsworth and moved out late teens. Saw a recent video of Soho Rd recently and the amount of trash and dirt on the streets is disgusting. The council obviously don't care, the people living there certainly don't. I would love to visit areas I knew during my childhood but never venture there now. It makes me angry to be honest...

Originally from the city I do find it strange and awkward the way the road system has changed and were I to visit the city center, I would pron go by train rather than drive in. As for the buses, it seems a pity that you showed so many of the very old blue and yellow ones that have prob not been used on the streets since the early 70s, most of which are now museum pieces, then you show the red TFL buses that are in themselves a lot better than virtually anywhere else in the UK. Finally, the weather? Being in the center of the country, Birmingham is equally under the influence of the Atlantic as it is the North Sea, so that does seem a strange point to raise. The UK is only a small island country so, with the exception of Scotland, there would prob be little variation across the rest of the country.

Around say 1995 if you were homeless, in Birmingham, you could walk into council house and get flat, obviously now is 7 year waiting list. but yeah. I think there is alot of corruption in homeless services, there is problem because hostels charge hundreds of pounds to the tax payer, and then you cannot work because the rent is equivqalent to luxury house. stuff like that,

When Detroit went bankrupt, things got ugly. A lot of other UK cities are on the verge of bankruptcy. I think what will happen is the central government will give them enough to avoid having to declare bankruptcy but these funds will basically be the city equivalents of life jackets. They may not go officially bankrupt but things will be bad.

Not too sure. Detroit is Detroit though, and like London, it was a major city. Birmingham although big has always been overshadowed by London and I fear what will happen next (I live in central Birmingham), is that HS2 will be completed and Birmingham will simply become another suburb of London. House prices will rocket even further. You can gauge this by looking at Digbeth which is already being pulled down to create a new service sector to serve HS2. Areas B12, B13 and B14 will become highly sought after by those wishing to escape from London. I think already run down parts of Birmingham such as Handsworth, Aston, Winston Green may finally improve, as those unable to find accommodation in B12, B13 & B14 will look there instead. Chin up. Brum not completely doomed yet!

Weather is English weather lol it's cold in winter but not Freezing but we don't really get snow its every couple years with snow . And summers are getting hotter but no to hot unless it's a one week heatwave but it rains mostly like the other cities in England. The dark side of Birmingham is the potholes on the roads and the Birmingham city council is bankrupt because they treated the woman differently to the men and they didn't wanted to pay the woman the same amount of money has the men which is so wrong that's why they gone bankrupt because the Birmingham city council didn't think they will get caught out . they just scum bags that's why alot of people are angry another reason is lots of rubbish everywhere in different areas it's because the Birmingham city council don't want to do anything they hardly collected the rubbish and we pay for it wouldn't that make you angry .
