Completely agree with you. Water’s voice can become tedious over many tracks, he has a moaning whine to his voice. Many of his solo material has a sameness to it. i.e. whisper the verse and scream the chorus. Together the group were magic.😊

Great points, James. There's something inherently "uncool" and straight about Waters' melodic choices and phrasing as a vocalist. The comparison between Waters' demo of Money and Gilmour's vocal on the final LP makes it painfully obvious that Gilmour is an underrated singer who takes a vocal melody and brings out its cool factor...just like he does on guitar.

Good Video, Thank You. David and Roger are the perfect example of ying and yang. They need each other. David's albums, particularly the later ones are very well produced elevator music, that is all just melodies with no peaks or valleys . Roger's are just grating, angry horrible stuff without any rays of sunshine coming through the storm clouds. Yes I own them all, and try to listen to them every few years. I think I'm hoping that with maturity they wont leave a bitter taste in my mouth (and ears) at some point. Oh, by the way, 299.99 for the box set is insane! Spin on you crazy diamonds!

Loved this clip! I really enjoy your easygoing discussion style and subscribed to your channel. I found this clip helpful in my research for my review of the new 50th-anniversary box set. That's really cool that you got to hear the album when it was first out. It's hard for me to try and even imagine that since by the time I was old enough it was just a fixture. And I completely agree with you that Roger doesn't understand the value of collaboration - but I thought you broke it down well in unpacking how different people measure artistry (songwriting vs. instrumental artistry).

I believe that Roger wrote the lyrics for Us and Them, while Rick wrote the music. The score was left over from an Antonioni movie that wasn't used in the film. The album gives sole credit to Wright, but that may have been an effect of their hyper-sharing of the PF Enterprise of the time. In the end either one is/was fully capable of producing compelling music on their own as demonstrated later on by each of their solo efforts. One of Roger's failings in expressing his opinions on a variety of subjects, despite his inspiring music lyrics, is his poor messaging. For example, he gets a bad rap for being antisemitic when he is actually bashing the Israeli Government for it's crimes against the Palestinian people, and not for actually disparaging the Jewish ethnicity, nationhood, and religion. Also, when he talks about Ukraine the lens of being anti-war at any cost clouds his words to the point of making it seem to be supporting Russia and blaming NATO for the conflict. Each of these circumstance are quite complex, and Roger seems to believe that violence is never the answer. His expression of that notion needs a lot of work, IMHO. I look forward to the "cover version" of DSotM from Waters, but generally have low expectations. His recent put downs of his previous band-mates was off the charts inappropriate, wrong, and unnecessary.
@RobertCassard

I agree with Waters' unfortunate inability to communicate nuanced political arguments, Dave. And these days, it seems no one is willing to sit still for nuance. FYI - the album is clear to note that all lyrics for DSOM were by Roger Waters. Only the music for Us and Them is "wrightfully" credited to Rick Wright.

Great video and I agree with about everything. I'm really looking forward to Waters' DSOTM but I fear it will be a bit like Jason Lytle's re-interpretation of Grandaddy's Sophtware Slump, that was good for one listening. On the other hand Gilmour made re-interpretations of famous Floyd songs as well during his live tours and AMLOR even got a partial re-recording. Perhaps Gilmour and Waters should get a room at the Fletcher Memorial Home where they can act like "overgrown infants" for the few years they still have to live.

I hear you, AD, and I don't deny Roger's talents for a minute. @Robert Cassard I think waters was essential to the band drive of force and creativity. He might not have played the music, hence the credit of three others, but he definitely oversaw it all. The albums after his departure were good pop rock tracks, but lacked severely in concept. A bit like Peter Gabriel era of genesis vs their pop 80s version. I think dsotm wish animals and the wall are his proof. But of course Wright and Gilmour were the guts on top of Roger's soul. You may be right, Vatted Brain. But there's still some time left in Waters' life for redemption. I find it quite ironic that the section of lyrics we hear in the "reimagined DSOM" snippet happen to be the ones about the pointlessness of death in war and the battle lines moving arbitrarily "from side to side." Perhaps he'll have a listen to the original album all the way through and his own lyrics will lead to an epiphany. (If you haven't noticed, I'm an idealist!) LOL

I’ve been a big fan of Waters over the years - Final Cut and Amused to Death are two of my most favourite albums - but for me he’s gone too far in trying to airbrush the other three from history (and in removing their parts from Comfortably Numb). Also gone too far with the politics. I saw his 2018 live show and thought it was one of the best live shows I’ve seen - but lately I’ve become one of the Pink Floyd fans whom Waters refers to when he opens his current show - who should f*** off to the bar if they don’t like his politics. After Waters Left the band turned to Sh!t Gilmour couldn't write a song to save his life, His wife couldn't either. As for touring, I'm sure Roger has made Millions in the last few years enough to last several lifetimes - I brought the Immersion Box set a few years ago so I can save $540 which this Definity is not worth.

The simple fact is that Waters can't sing very well. Gilmour is a great singer with a far greater range. That re-imagined excerpt of Us and Them sounds lifeless and like another track from The Final Cut.

Nailed it. One of the reasons DSOM was such a revelation when it came out was how powerful the vocals were. Seemingly overnight, Gilmour (and Wright) had come into their own as singers. Phil Collins did the same thing when Peter Gabriel left Genesis. Who knew Phil could sing like he did on Trick of the Tail?

On the album "The Endless River"....there is a quote on there. "The sum is greater than the parts"....never a truer word said. Waters is a miserable old man, full of self praise and a megalomaniac. The sum IS greater than the parts. Roger needs to take that on board. Oh...the new version...I've heard the clips and as usual Waters can't sing for toffee. Thus we will soon have one of those moments whereby a classic is "remade"....and it will be in the bargain bin soon after...like many remade films. Let it go Rog. Just let it go!

My 2 cents: Waters was the ideas man, and he wrote all the lyrics and much of the music; his contribution was immense, no doubt. But, the sound of the Floyd also centers on Gilmour's fabulously emotive guitar-playing and Wright's keyboards. So, for Waters to try hogging all the credit for the Floyd's work is very wrong. There was a synergy among the band members that made the Floyd what it was, and Waters should recognize and acknowledge that. At the same time, I believe that Waters had tried (at and after Live 8, in 2005) to reconcile with Gilmour, to make more real-Floyd music, but Gilmour put the kibosh on that. Based in part on a BBC interview of Gilmour a few years ago, he appears to be a vindictive person incapable of real forgiveness; e.g., he shunned his elderly mother who sought emotional support from him, for reasons which include the fact that she and his father "abandoned" Gilmour and his siblings by spending a year in the US when he was 10 or so. Gilmour's own wife has said he has difficulty expressing emotion other than thru his guitar.

I think the question is this...... Could Waters have made DSOTM, the piece he wrote entirely, with three other musicians? Possibly, could Gilmour, Wright and Mason have made DSOTM without Waters? I think not. No doubt about it, Gilmour, Mason and Wright are all talented musicians, in fact Richard Wright like Zeppelin's John Paul Jones is extremely underrated. But at the end of the day if we are all completely honest with ourselves there would have been no Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall and Final Cut without Roger Waters. Just like a good recipe, you can make substitutions here and there but you can't replace the main ingredient and on those aforementioned 5 albums, Roger Waters concept, vision, lyrics and ideas were the main ingredient.
@RobertCassard
@RobertCassard Жыл бұрын
That’s an interesting take, wm. I think Waters is pretty widely credited as being the primary driving force behind those works. When you list the albums chronology, it makes me realize that I personally like those albums in decreasing order. It may be more than coincidence that the more Roger asserted himself, sang lead and marginalized the other members’ contributions, the less I liked the LPs. Just my opinion, but it confirms that, at least for me, the Pink Floyd of 1973 was greater than the sum of its parts, and MUCH greater than Waters was capable of being on his own.

One only has to listen to the tuneless drivel that Roger produced in his post Pink Floyd solo work to understand who the musicians and melody makers were in the band. Yes, he wrote some good lyrics ...
@RobertCassard
@RobertCassard Жыл бұрын
Damn good lyrics! But ironically, rarely words he seems to live by. "Tuneless drivel" is harsh, but I can't say I disagree in certain cases. What Waters fails to acknowledge is that both Gilmour and Wright had such innate melodic sensibilities. On many of the group songs, they're the reason we want to listen once, then keep coming back to hear them again and again.

Why re-record Us and Them? It is a masterpiece. Roger Waters is bit of a narcissist, just like Sting. The vocals are perfect on Us and Them are perfect. Waters is a terrible vocalist for the most part and his claim that he “wrote” Dark Side is a bit warped. Lyrics don’t sell albums. Hooks, riffs and production sell albums. There is a reason why Roger Waters’ solo albums SUCK and flopped! He had no one to counterbalance his writing direction and hone his songs into something beautiful or catchy.
