In chapter two of the cabinet building series, I’ll show you everything you need to know about building shaker style cabinet doors and ebonizing wood. For these doors, I chose to veneer them with white oak and walnut using an MDF substrate. And this ebonizing process resulted in the blackest boards I’ve seen. Follow along and stay tuned for the series finale.

I would recommend general finishes water-based wood stain in black if you haven't tried it yet. I have used it on a bunch of projects to get a super deep black finish that looks great. Its super easy to apply and would save a ton of time.

8 :) Quick quesion - you said that's "it's important to veneer both sides to prevent warping as the glue dries" does this also apply to contact cement? as it's already dry when gluing... Thanks!
@TimberBiscuitWoodworks
@TimberBiscuitWoodworks 25 күн бұрын
You can get away with just one side with contact cement, but make sure that it’s not a raw veneer and that it paper backed. I’ve also had mixed results with bubbling using contact cement, so it’s not my recommendation to go that route.

I’m going to have to try ebonizing. Looks nice. How does durability compare to stain? I know it depends on top finish coat, but seems like a lot of work. Looks beautiful.
@TimberBiscuitWoodworks
@TimberBiscuitWoodworks 25 күн бұрын
Good question! Because the solutions soak in, they are pretty deep in the wood grain. Your finish coat will do a lot to protect the surface as you said but I wouldn't worry too much about it. It is a lot of work but the process is pretty fun and the results are awesome so give it a go!

@TimberBiscuitWoodworks

You can, but it’s kind of tricky and has mixed results. I really depends on what the substrate is and what the veneer is like you’re laying it on. I’m glad you enjoy them! Thank you!

Doesn't the ebonizing & post-ebonizing rinse end up raising the grain? Do you do a do a super light sanding pass or anything to smooth things out afterwards?
@TimberBiscuitWoodworks
@TimberBiscuitWoodworks 26 күн бұрын
Great question, so the initial tea and iron solutions will pop the grain but the process of resanding and wiping away all the iron fibers with a shop towel kind of burnish the surface. For that reason when it comes time to do the rinse, the popped fibers have been removed.
@sfallier
@sfallier 26 күн бұрын
@@TimberBiscuitWoodworks Interesting. I've done the iron acetate thing before, but found myself chasing my tail trying to get a smooth surface, but also not sand through the ebonized layer. I also couldn't get the surface clean. No matter how much I wiped or vacuumed, running a clean shop towel across the surface would leave the towel covered in black dust. Will have to give your method a shot the next time I break out the iron & vinegar.
@TimberBiscuitWoodworks
@TimberBiscuitWoodworks 26 күн бұрын
Yeah I hear ya. That was one of the issues I’ve run into on past projects as well. The rinses do a fantastic job of removing the surface iron and the burnishing takes care of the grain.

7,5/10 Why not just use the blue tape when glueing the veneer? And why not just use something like a black monocoat? This seems like a whole lot of trouble for a similar result. Anyways, good build. Again. If you keep at it your channel is gonna really grow. Maybe take a little inspiration from bigger creators and add some of those nice beauty shots at the end. With the contrasty lighting and all that. Other than that, perfect video. I love that youre explaining everything so well too.
@TimberBiscuitWoodworks
@TimberBiscuitWoodworks 21 күн бұрын
The gum tape doesn’t stretch like painters tape and is a lot thinner, so when the veneer is pressed it doesn’t leave lines. There’s a lot of ways to get black finishes, in this case I think the ebonizing just gives it a finish that look better than the other options. Glad you enjoyed this one, and don’t worry the beauty shots will be there in the finale.

IX/X - broke the tape, but kept the continuous pull. Okay... so many questions, but first - yes, my dude, you nailed it. That contrast is amazing and I can't wait for the finish application p0rn. I've done a lot of ebonization, but won't claim to be an expert. I did use just regular cold-brew tea (yes, Lipton) for a while, but noted it didn't do much for the depth of ebonizing. I also have found that if you cheat the vinegar volume up a bit, the steel wool will completely dissolve, no filtering needed. Now, what I've never done is the tea rinse and burnish step, which leads to my question: Is skipping the rinse and wipe the reason I've had pieces literally rust if I don't immediately finish them? Can't wait for the final episode of this!
@TimberBiscuitWoodworks
@TimberBiscuitWoodworks 25 күн бұрын
Thank you man, I appreciate it! Yeah, if you don’t do those rinses then the iron shavings just sit on the surface since they don’t penetrate the wood. But that’s also minimized by filtering the solution since the larger ones are caught in the filter. Give both a shot and I’m sure you will love the results.
