And that's not a part of soul, that's full Soul of Ornstein. How illusion was capable of taking Smough's power from him? I don't think this is the real Ornstein. According to his soul's item descritpion, he's only "reminiscent". Ornstein used lightning, and this one uses hexes (dark). He's either a dark construct or a corrupted underling of Ornstein.

Liquid Awesomeness Obviously this is just speculation and I doubt we’ll even get a solid answer on the matter, but here is my theory on the whole story of Ornstein from his first appearance onward. First you fight Ornstein in Dark Souls l, and the cannon kill order is Smough and then Ornstein if I’m not mistaken. The lore has them exist after this fight which can be explained through the undead curse or somesuch. Anyways, if I was correct in saying that Smough dies first, this would mean that Ornstein absorbs the soul of Smough, who is evil and corrupt. I believe that after the fight, when Ornstein left to search for the Nameless King, this has a negative effect on Ornstein and causes him to go corrupt. This explains the black magic and dark armour of the Old Dragonslayer in Dark Souls II. After his fight as the Old Dragonslayer, he revives again and continues on his way. However, by the time he reaches Archdragon Peak, he has possibly gone hollow and is killed for good by the Nameless King during a time after a linking of the fire when there is no undead curse. (Though I’m sure the Nameless King could have killed him even if he wasn’t hollow.) His armour, finally free from the corrupted Ornstein, reverts back to its former glory, explaining its presence and appearance in Dark Souls III. However, that’s, like I said, just speculation.

That One Guy On KZbin fun theory but the way I’ve seen it is, the ornstein we fought was another illusion created by Gwyndolin to mask the fading glory of Anor londo, in actual fact Ornstein left to find the nameless king and Smough stayed behind with an illusion of Ornstein to guard Anor londo, meanwhile Ornstein finds the now hollow nameless king and is slain meanwhile in dark souls 2, which completely throws off the story and timeline to where it’s barely mendable, anyway the cathedral built in Heides tower of flame was built either as homage to the real anor londo cathedral or an attempt to recreate its glory with a an imitation of the real dragon slayer as he was never found alive why any of it is beyond me like i said dark souls 2 completely wrecked the story and dark souls 3 could barely mend it

We find his armor in Dark Souls 3 because nearly 10 000 years past. Everything could have happened to his armor by that time. And by the way Dark Souls 2 had a great way of actually CONTINUING the story while Dark Souls 3 could offer nothing but fan service. In my opinion.

Here's the lore incase anyone is still confused. Ornstein and smough were companions, ornstein quite disliked Smoughs cannibalism however he dealt with it nonetheless. However one day Ornstein left in search of the Nameless king (gwyns firstborn). So Gwyndolin made an illusion of Ornstein so that it would appear that Ornstein was still there. Smough however knew that Ornstein was an illusion despite not being told. Now in ds2 this ornstein is the one that is trying to find the nameless king. He searches for him and is on a path however you come in at just the right time and Ornstein knows you are trouble so for just a moment he leaves his path to fight you. You kill him. Now ornsteins body is left behind while his armor is collected and sent to a different place (I'm forgetting the name however it's accessible after you kill the nameless king). So in ds3 you are fighting literally just an armor of what Ornstein used to wear. Hope that clears things up.

Proof that Ornstein and Smough would be a joke of a boss if they were on their own The reason the original fight was good was because they complemented each other in battle. Ornstein was the fast one but didn't that hard and couldn't take too many hits, Smough was the tanky and slow one but dished out a ton of damage. On their own, they suck since they're so predictable when you only have to focus on one of them.

This game is kinda funny. I’ve played elden ring, ds1 and ds3 and this game just makes me laugh. I’ve fought 3 4 main bosses so far and each of them I used the exact same tactic. Bait their 3 swing attack as I circle to the back for 2 back shots. Rinse repeat. This game isn’t really THAT difficult but it is definitely hard. The bosses and enemies aren’t crazy or anything.. it’s just the movement mechanics are what make the game difficult. You’re constantly fighting the horrible delay on everything.
