This really captured the spirit of 90’s games so well. The one thing that sticks out like a sore thumb though is the procedurally generated clouds in the sky. That would have MELTED people’s faces in awe back in the late 90’s. That and the pixel shaders on the swamp water, but there were games that faked that same look pretty well back then. Anyway, amazing job. I felt some major nostalgia for Myst and some other games I sank into circa 1995-1999.

Hearing that damn railroad sign thing's chime approaching as the guy was running back to the house was absolutely nerve-wracking. I wonder if that creature was what the Server Guy was referring to when he asked “the Shepherd’s not mad, is he?” - although I can’t think of any correlation between a shepherd and a walking railroad sign. Maybe because shepherds guide sheep, and “being railroaded” is a term for kinda the same thing?
@MandyDullos
@MandyDullos 13 сағат бұрын
@@beforesomeduring7330 Seems a plausible enough philosophical connection between the two. Shepherds guide their flock from point A to point B, railroad signs direct trains from point A to point B. Might be some deeper connection between the nature of People Used to Live Here being a video game and the lack of agency of digital characters; trains are ever bound to their rails and unable to leave them, only able to go A-to-B, and sheep's movement is wholly determined by their shepherd...

Interesting that one of the items to pick up is Native American wampum which are shell beads. The Hockomock swamp means “place where spirits dwell” and was/is sacred to the Wampanoag tribe and they worshiped and feared Hobomock, the chief deity of death and disease. Hobomock, composed of human souls of the dead, was known to congregate in areas like the Hockomock. Hockomock swamp is part of what people refer to as the Bridgewater Triangle. Essentially a place of weird and paranormal events and bigfoot like creatures etc. And a supposed reason for this is that a famous wampum belt was lost in the swamp and so the land was cursed. The image used in the video for wampum does like very much like a belt as well.

...so, I've noticed a lot of eerie things that might imply this is regarding (or has connections to) the Holocaust. In WW2, Native Americans that knew Navajo and English were used by the US military as a form of encryption: not only was Navajo relatively unknown outside of the US, these code talkers further spoke in code while speaking Navajo. (Per Wiki, the only spoken military code not broken during the war.) These Native American references feed into the implication further, IMO.

Some explanations: So hockomock swamp is a real place and it is located in an area called the bridge water triangle along Massachusetts where people have reported paranormal and UFO sightings. A war broke out among areas including Massachusetts with native Americans against English colonists as an attempt to drive out the English (King Philip’s war) in which a lot of the war took place among the swamp. Some people still claim to see the ghosts of native Americans in the swamp to this day and hearing screams. The native Americans thought of the swamp as sacred before and hockomock means “place where spirits dwell” but to the English they knew it as devils swamp. The wampum belt was also lost during the battles which is why I think it shows up here in the game. This belt is believed to have caused paranormal activity that haunts the swamp. Some can even hear something knocking down trees in the forest (which is maybe why there isn’t many trees here?) I found this info online in an article so lemme know if anyone finds anything else!

Its weird how high tech the tunnel connecting the swamp to the meadow and the office building are, since the game's apparently "a comprehensive reconstruction of the events experienced and documented by Clifton J Saywell between 1934 and 1946." Maybe it's artistic license on the part of the devs, but maybe not. Also, Saywell's obituary in the description says he was in WW2. What part of this did he experience in WW2??? After the war Saywell worked as a "human computer", which was an actual occupation... But the guy trapped in the data center says he doesnt want people thinking hes "spying on their thoughts" which is ominous. Also its incredible how well this captures the surreal vibes of a half remembered nightmare from when you were a kid.

@Tukaro
@Tukaro 13 сағат бұрын
The fact that there's a specific data center makes me think that it, the tunnel, and the modern building are literal (well, relative to the documented experiences.) It could be that the dev misinterpreted what Saywell wrote through the dev's own experiences and knowledge, tho, and none of the "modern" stuff was actually encountered.

There is a discrepancy between between the old looking style of the game and multiple different things that feel a lot more modern. For instance, I feel like using the "E" button to interact with things is a relatively newer thing, but then later on in the video you have 2D images serving as NPC characters such as the person who got taken away and the railroad crossing sign that both takes away the original NPC and chases the main character.

What's scary about the railroad crossing is the knowledge that that isn't what it really is. This is a 2005 video recreation of events in the 1930s-40s. Saywell didn't see a railroad crossing sign attack someone. What he saw was so foreign to to him that the closest thing the game director could come up with as an ingame proxy was an extremely fastly-sprinting blaring railroad crossing sign. When you realize that the "monster" here is the closest approximation a 2005 indie-game dev has to approximating what Saywell actually saw, this scene becomes 100x more unnerving. It almost has a Flatwoods monster, or even an eldritch abomination quality to it, that it, whatever it WAS that Saywell saw...it definitely wasn't a railroad sign. Great horror gets scarier to more you think about it.
@presidentgamingz
@presidentgamingz Сағат бұрын
when was it said that it isn't a railroad crossing sign?
@OsQuinneOsGwynneOsRobynne
@OsQuinneOsGwynneOsRobynne 45 минут бұрын
@@presidentgamingz It wasn't said explicitly, but we were given explicit dates for when the game is being made vs when it occurred, which implies that some of the details in the telling and in the story itself aren't 1 to 1. For example, the server room guy isn't wearing clothes archetypical of someone from the 30s. He's just a stock asset available to a 2005 game dev. So that cues us in on that some of the assets the game dev is using to tell this story aren't 100% accurate to the story itself. If we know the image of the guy we're seeing isn't literally what the guy in the story looks like, it stands to reason that the monster is the same, right? I suppose it COULD be a literal moving road sign. In absurdist stories like this that's entirely possible. But I'm reasonably sure that Kane deliberately made it very clear that "The game is in 2005, but the events take place in the 30s," and used aesthetics to match the '05 indie game feel OVER being accurate to the 30s, to tell us that what we are seeing is the game dev approximating Saywell's accounts, with clear creative liberties. And in that case, the monster is the most obvious candidate for the question "what other game assets here might not be 100% accurate." And all of Kane's monsters sort of play along the idea of "Wait...what the fuck am I running from again?" And while "evil sign" is very wtf, I think even more wtf is the idea of "It's not literally a traffic sign, but the guy who saw it can't think of anything more similar."

@Tukaro

@vbretonneux You're right, I should have clarified that I think Saywell somehow got directly involved, either having friends/relatives who were victims of it or being somehow there to witness it first-hand. I didn't think he was a victim or perpetrator himself. (The time period for the game also starts many years before the Holocaust did, but just after the Nazi rise to power.)

So timeline. These events are between 1934 and 1946. WW2 was 1939 to 1945. He was born in 1914. His obituary seems to imply he fought in ww2. This first video seems to begin in 1934, at age 20, 5 years before ww2. The 'you made it' has Time: 851. In case anyone was wondering about the door at 11:43, I did the math, no time is missing. 851 seconds is 14.1833333 or round up to 14.20 minutes. Day 1 starts at 2:36 and the end game card is at 16:55. So it's about 14.19 minutes. That's all I've got so far.

A connection to the railroad crossing: a lot of people are saying the game refers to the Hockomock Swamp/Bridgewater Triangle MA. The MBTA is planning a Commuter Rail expansion called South Coast Rail. Phase 1 of the project is being completed this May, while Phase 2 is to be completed in 2030. The Phase 2 route seeks to extend services through a quicker route via rebuilding an abandoned rail line through… the Hockomock swamp. The delays to Phase 2 are attributed to environmental pushback for the line going through the swamp…

One thing i haven't seen anyone discussing but i think is interesting is the link in the description that leads to a newspaper article about Saywell's death. One interesting detail is how it says that Saywell liked to take walks near a swamp, which could be a reference to the swamp mentioned at 0:38. One speculation i have is that maybe the overgrown man is the wierd robot thing blinking its eyes in the last upload (which i originally thought was the rolling giant lol). Cant wait to see more.

@@zapmatt7005 I noticed the newspaper clipping could have been cropped to only show Saywell's obit, but the clipping conspicuously includes an ad for a real estate school. The school has a website that gives its current physical address, but the main image on that website shows the building at the address listed in the old advertisement. There's also a real estate listing on another site showing the same building in a state of disrepair. I'm not savvy enough to determine if that's a real ad included for verisimilitude or if the real estate school is part of an ARG.

The Newspaper Clipping in the description gives scant info but it tells us some things. For one, the "event experienced" by Saywell happened when he was between 20 and 32. This was also during WWII so he did not take up his interest in mathmatics or position as a computer until after these events. Number two, if this game is a reconstruction of these events, it doesn't make that much sense considering the data room computers are a far cry to what computers looked like back in that time. Number three, the obituary also does not state what he was doing during these years, which I found very odd, considering that there is a whole game made about his experiences at this time. I would also like to note that the places mentioned in the newspaper clipping are real places (For example, the Library on South Street in Bridgewater MA and the Cemetery). Even the Realty School lead back to a building that used to ro be used for realty (now a barber shop). This means that the articles in the paper, other than Saywell's obituary, are likely irrelevant and I have wasted my time. Lastly, there is a place on South Street just down the street from the library called "J's Flying Pizza". This is also completely irrelevant, but it looks like a damn good place to grab a slice and now I'm hungry.

I don't think Clifton directly told his story to the game developers or gave input/feedback on this game since it was developed after he died. The obituary says he had a notebook, so it is possible that he recorded his experience in the book, which eventually made its way into the developer's hands, maybe through his nephew Michael? I believe the content of the game represents not an exact reconstruction of the events, but a recreation of the events described in Clifton's writing, as interpreted by the developers. what Clifton may have described as a "data hall" in the 1950s might have a different interpretation by someone making a game about his writings 50 years later. This may apply to other details as well, but we don't know because we haven't read the original document. I suspect that the rail crossing sign may not have been a literal rail sign, but just a lack of details from Clifton. For Example, he may have written: "There was a creature that made a loud ringing noise running across the plains. It was moving too fast to see clearly, but it looked kind of like a railway warning sign with legs"
