This video took a fat minute to write and edit, so as a small channel, the support really means so much to me ❤. A couple notes covering things I've seen come up in several comments: 1) The FromSoft portion of the video begins at 12:50. Dark Souls III specifically at 17:15. 2) I have revisited Bloodborne and am nearly done with my platinum run through. 3) I have logged some serious hours into MGSV and love the game, although I am still under the impression it shipped with a significant amount of missing content. Also PLEASE give me some feedback on what game you’d want to see covered in this essay style format. I’m currently thinking TLOUII?

Sekiro and Lies of Pinocchio are both worth of this format. LOP is smth between Bloodborne and Sekiro, best of both. And i'm happy that someone had a similar or almost the same story (experience) as me, meaning ER and then DS3. I've just googled more, so i wanted to to beat ER without summons and fancy weapons, wanted to beat game just with quality build and nothing fancy for first time. The guys on reddit and discord said magic and stuff was good for second playthrough, so that was my meta, to play it as basic dark souls. It was "little" harder, and took me 2x more time, like 120 hours to fully complete game, but all the time was 10x more worth it. Best achviement for me was killing Malenia with the "Let me solo her" style. It took me 2 weeks like 2-3 hours a day. But that satisfaction

You put into words what I wasn't able to multiple times in a single video. Thank you. I hope your life goes into the direction this masterpiece has set you to. Sekiro is also an amazing experience with much of the same virtues. The people who can't experience Dark souls III definitely feel like they hold lesser value, just look at the top comment of this video. It's a blessing we are this fortunate and live in this era. Also the DLC the ringed city is one of the best expansions ever made in a lazy DLC ridden world. Truly a testament to what gaming can be, and what it sadly is.

I am experiencing the same with Bloodborne. Any accomplishment I want, I have to put in the blood, sweat, and tears to obtain. Analyze the enemies I get stuck on an study their moves to find their patterns. With the lack of a shield or many ranged weapons, the only way forward is to be aggressive but not greedy. And most importantly, don’t be afraid to lose or fail. The gameplay is challenging yet also intoxicating, the story and lore are hidden yet also deep. This game is truly an awe inspiring experience.

I love that feeling in these kinds of games. When at the beginning you're like, "I don't think I can do this". And then after a few tries, you get the hang of more and more moves. You change from a passive mindset to a more active and aggressive one. Before you know it, you're at the final boss going "I know I can beat this."

I feel this is an issue with most content creators. While I applaud taking the time to set the scene and properly insert the subject into context, there's too much of this masturbatory "essay" mentally that goes on and on to add faux gravitas. It's like trying to avoid the "style over substance" situation, only that too much substance becomes style, ironically. Detail is good as long as it's focused. Get to the point, less is more, etc.

I genuinely agree with this criticism of the video as it currently stands. Thing is, from my end, it's more of a title/thumbnail issue than the content of the writing. The video was initially titled "How Dark Souls III Defeats Modern Gaming". I was hoping this would create the expectation that some of the video would be about "modern gaming". Unfortunately, KZbin wasn't showing the video to people with this title, so I switched it to something more concise and "click-able". The video covers multiple topics and it's hard to put that all in a short title. I did my best and i think the result is still not optimal, as you pointed out. It was a good learning experience for me to think of the thumbnail, title and entire essay from a viewer perspective, and stick closer to one topic next time. Thanks for your feedback and for watching : )

I challenged the king to defeat him flawlessly even though I had never beaten him before. I truly felt like I overcame a challenge, while gaining an even deeper appreciation for the game. I have fallen in love with this game and look forward to playing every soulsborne. Maybe it was this very feeling of uncompleteness that drove me to talk about it over and over again. Even to the point where my family had to ban talking about it during dinner time. And here it is, the reason why Dark Souls 3 is more than any piece of media I’ve ever encountered, expressed in words. I’m still firmly of the belief that it must be experienced to be understood, but this feels like it at least somewhat captures some essence of what makes Dark Souls 3 like a religious experience. At least for me anyway. Thankyou.

This is a high quality product made with passion that has been blessed by a faithful souls lover. I keep coming back to watch the 'I have to focus' part. It reminds me... everything? People's evergrowing laziness, the Uncle Iroh's humility, shame and pride quote, Ippo's resilience to get back up every time even tho he is brutally beaten, humanity's growing weakness that makes us run away from the truths and ignore our ignorance instead of acknowledging truths and trying to be better. That part... is just perfect.

My experience was almost the same as yours. I started with Sekiro but dropped it because it was too hard for me at that time. Then Elden Ring was released. I tried it immediately and it really hooked me up for tons of hours, until I got stuck on some parts. I then looked for tutorials, tips, and tricks until I beat the game. I come back to Sekiro but am still looking for a guide on KZbin. I really got interested in the Dark Souls series next, I beat DS 1 and 2, but I am still following Cowboy playthrough on KZbin. Then, when it comes to Dark Souls 3, I want to really experience this game by myself, no guide, no tips or tricks, just a blind playthrough by myself, and god, I'm really glad I'm doing that. Now I can feel why Dark Souls is a masterpiece. It was a game that you should experience, explore, and learn by yourself. You level up together as the game character, and it will give you the most satisfying and unforgettable gaming experience.

At the time, I was going through a lot of apprehension and curiosity about these games but I was also feeling burnt out on RPGs as a whole. Diving into these games saved my love for RPGs by reminding me that it's not about skill trees, level ups and perks; it's about the adventure.

This is potentially one of the best video essays I've seen on this topic. And I would say - not just this topic - but rather also on the intricacies associated with it. I was cooking while I listened to your work. I peeked to my left, to where the monitor was, every now and then, and I was very much enthralled throughout. You had me nodding my head several times and giving me several aha moments before the video ended. There were even points when I stopped what I was doing for a few seconds out of a minor eureka shock you had given me. You were able to link so many concepts together quite clearly: concepts I myself hadn't really thought of before. One of these were points were on the entities competing for our attention. I never really did think of that before, but it makes so much sense. Your choice of music also is quite potent and fitting throughout. Except for the minor lack of audio towards the very last seconds of the video, everything was immensely, professionally well made. Beautiful work, beautiful work. And I am excited to hear more from you. And I am excited to see you blossom onward alongside your contemporaries. You very much deserve it. You have earned yourself a follower and subscriber.

And lastly I do all the boss fights without the spirit summons, except for the foreskin duo, because I like the harder challenge, and Malenia is 1 of the 3 hardest bosses I’ve ever fought imo, alongside Orphan of Kos and Sword Saint Isshin. Lastly I’m playing through DS3 again and beat the game, fighting Nameless King rn, then I’ll go to the DLCs and I hope I finish b4 SOTE. Why can't anyone praise souls games without being utterly delusional and pretending that 99.9999% of modern gaming is some fucking gacha hellhole with 1 good game every blue moon?.. Also... why are we pretending that souls games are this insane life altering march through hell like it's a right of passage to being a higher lifeform? These games are undoubtedly hard, but at the same time it's like a 100hr game at most.. the boss you die to a 100 times, each attempt is like 2min. It's so ironic when the most popular genre today is competitive games whether its shooters or mobas, if you're hardstuck gold in league, valo, or any other game, getting to plat is literally more time consuming, more stressful, and harder than finishing the entire soulsborne series, so idk why you aren't praising those games when your biggest point is "instant gratification bad". Can't help but think all those "DS saved me" vids are a roundabout way to stroke one's ego by saying "I gitted gud" without sounding pretentious, and of course the mandatory reason of chasing the algorithm since cultish vids around fromsoft gets cultish support.

I was a freshman in college the first time I beat Dark Souls 1. I was home for Christmas, and we had just buried the family dog that afternoon. This was not the first pet I had lost, and part of me had grown numb to the experience. I was sad, but it didn't render me immobile for the day like it had rightly done to others in my family. I had lost to Gwyn a few times, and I had built an attachment to Solaire. So I summoned him. That was not an immediate fix. But on the last fight, I was one hit from going down. I don't know exactly what happened, but what I think happened was Gwyn's targeting shifted to Solaire right before he was going to hit me, and Solaire went down instead. That gave me enough time to use an Estus, then I moved in and managed to defeat Gwyn. Solaire dying allowed me to continue the fight, and finish it. That finally broke me, and I was crying through the final scene and the end credits. I'm not one to sit through credits in most media, but Dark Souls earned my attention. I have other moments like that through other Souls games, but the only equally profound one was when I beat Bloodborne. I had owned it since launch, but I had not beaten it until 2020. I was living with some friends from church, and they were out of town for the weekend. The month of October, I challenged myself to start Bloodborne from scratch and complete it before the first of November. My father is big on lunar calendars, and that same weekend was when Christ was actually supposed to have been born according to the lunar calendar. So he and I agreed to read through the Gospel of Luke in 3 days, each night calling each other and discussing our thoughts on it. Bloodborne is not a Christian game, but the juxtaposition of comparing a Gospel of my faith with a game featuring themes that can be seen as critical of it provided me a lot of space for thought. I very much still am a practicing Christian, and that weekend has a lot to do with it. I am certain Miyazaki did not intend for any game he made to strengthen someone's Christian faith specifically, but I have to imagine that provocation of thought was absolutely the goal.

If you haven't played DS3's DLCs, you truly do owe it to yourself after making a video such as this. I think the artistic intention behind the story of the content in the DLCs is an allegory to just what you were saying here and how in order for us to move forward as an industry, we must take back our fire from those who repress it and blaze our own path. Then find the essence of what we hold most dear caught in the clutches of archaic tradition and carry it along to create something great and novel. It's a perfect rationale of FromSoftware's design philosophy, and I think there's no better way to see it than to fully experience it as art through that extra content

I have finished every soulsborne game. While bloodborne and sekiro are my favorite of the bunch I started my journey with ds3 as my first. I remember getting stuck on iudex gundyr for a good amount of time since I was also only used to cod, Zelda, Minecraft and Skyrim. At every other boss I hit a massive brick wall that seemed too big to climb. From the curse rottet greatwood to Slave knight Gael and everything in between. I wanted to give up so many times but I also wanted to keep pushing. If only out of curiosity if I even could make it. And I did. After hours on hours of dying and trying and dying and trying again I had finally made it. I still can’t properly describe the amount of accomplishment I felt after every victory, and how good it felt when I breezed through the game on ng+. This game showed me that I am more than what I assumed to be. That if I was only willing to put in the time and effort that I can accomplish my goals. I will never forget that. And I will always treasure ds3 for it. It didn’t magically make me a better person or something. But it showed me the best person I can be. To me that is priceless.

Over time I have heard a lot of people joke about the "obligatory soulsborne video essay" that every youtuber ends up making. And since I don't have a way of editing a video, here's my essay lol. The thing is, these videos have a point, it's not just a meme. This series DOES in fact save lives, it changes you. Anyone who has played these games and has seen them through to the end will have a story to tell, and that's the real reason why all of these video essays about this series exist. These games MAKE you want to talk about them, because they are that good at what they accomplish, despite the current landscape of gaming. I'm glad Dark Souls 3 changed you, for me it was Dark Souls 1. There's an item in DS1 called humanity, it's a very important item that allows you to get more estus flask heals and utilize the summons for bosses. And funny enough that simple game mechanic not only ties into the lore of the whole game, it's the entire metaphor the game is making about society. Those little humanities are shards of the Dark soul itself, which in turn was found by the furtive pygmy, the first human, and with the game's theme of light and dark, Gwyn's age of fire, the fire fading, and the fear of the abyss. It's all about a God's fear of humanity, and the new age of humanity, the age of dark. But at the same time you see what horrors lie in the abyss, what will await the world if the fire fades, you have monstrosities like the townsfolk of Oolacile who have all been disfigured and corrupted by Manus, who in turn is widely believed to be the furtive pygmy itself, then you have Artorias who in legend traversed the abyss and stopped it's spread, only in actuality he was corrupted by it and the deeds he was credited with were actually finished by the player. Even in Dark Souls 3 you have the abyss watchers, who continue Artorias' legacy, only to become corrupted themselves by the abyss. At it's core, humanity, the age of dark, and the abyss are referring to the human nature, the deep, selfish, cruelty you see in the real world and throughout history. And the entire trilogy is giving you a dilemma - do we link the fire? To keep the dark at bay? At the cost of the undead curse continuing to ravage the land, and through out the ages we see how disfigured the world becomes due to the endless linking of the fire, JUST to keep a long dead but manipulative and guilty God's wish of his age and era to endure? OR, do we let the fire fade? To finally end Gwyn's cycle and let the age of humanity begin? Even at the cost of the horrors of humanity and what darkness lies with in it? It's a dilemma with no good outcome, much like the real world we live in. Funny enough I started this series in January of 2020, so this bleak metaphor the series portrays stayed with me through the entire pandemic. So yeah, anyone who comes across these games and looks deeper into them will begin asking existential questions about themselves and the world. These games WILL change you. And I hope anyone who has seen this video and read this comment who has yet to try these games, I implore you: DO SO.

When I beat Melania for my second play thru... I didn't use any magic or mimic tear or spirit ash. I felt like I had to beat it strictly "sword and board". Elden Ring was also my first FromSoft game. It took me weeks. Granted some days I could invest more time than others, but still, it just became a focus. Just like you so eloquently explain as you fight Nameless King. I chipped away, eventually to where the first phase was easy. Then I had a gesture at the ready, for the day when I beat her, so that I could whip it out for the short recorded bit at the end. It felt really amazing. I am going to play Dark Souls 3, once I beat Consort Radahn. Great video.

This game is so overrated to me, it's insane. I mean don't get me wrong, it's still a great game with some great bosses. Gael and Friede are all-timers for me. But man, there is also so much stuff in it that is just linear and derivative without the inventiveness of the other games in the series.
