I'm sad this is your last video from Legends of Lordran (even though I knew), this video, among others, shows just how good of a storyteller you are and how much you care about the way you portray it (in your editing and shot choices). Regardless of when I've agreed/disagreed with your theories, I've thoroughly enjoyed the entirety of Legends of Lordran, and think this is a fitting swan song. (To Legends of Lodran). I think I speak for many others when I say I can't wait to see what you'll have in store once Dark Souls II comes out, and I'll be just as eager as everyone else to find out. An internet standing ovation to you, good sir!

miguels stone Yeah and honestly I like TerraMantis Style of Presenting the Story than VaatiVidya's. Don't get me wrong I like both, but Vaati's style is a Straightforward and also he's like talking directly to us. Terra's on the other hand tells the Story using 'Books' and some other ways like in his Video of Gwyndolin and Havel's Lore. Both are Great in their own ways and Once the Date is 25th April, I really am looking forward to learn lore from both Vaati and Terra. Final note: Keep up the Great Work Vaati, Terra! We would never want to see you guys go Hollow. - JSP -

Of all the Dark Souls lore videos I've seen, these are the best and most well thought out. It never occurred to me to think of Gwyn as a hollow but it makes perfect sense. He sacrificed his own humanity, blinded by his own desperate struggle for power. For as much as he resents humanity, he himself is quintessentially human. You have my respect, sir.
@juanimto10 жыл бұрын
Gwyn and the rest of the lords aren't human. Gwin didn't have humanity to offer to the flame so he used his own soul to kindle it a bit further. You could think of it as a form of humanity since he went hollow. Though that could be an effect to whoever comes in contact with the flame? But maybe I'm wrong.. since there's the chaos witches who do represent life :/
@protogod1910 жыл бұрын
I see many people referring to Gwyn as a Tyrant but I don't think that as entirely true. Gwyn has done and ordered cruel things but he did not do them out of cruelty. I believe that Gwyn tried doing what he thought was best for humanity by attempting to save humanity from itself. Keeping humans in the light and stoking the fire to keep the shadows at bay. I'd go as far to say that Gywn is the most human character in the game despite being considered a god. The Abyssal Sorceries and the Abyss itself are things harmful to all life and reflect the evil that all humanity is capable of. The Abyss corroded Artorias and mutated the Oolicians to frightfully cruel creatures.New Londo had to have been his cruelest order but as you explored it's depths did you not see what horrors still survived the flood? The ghosts, the mass of souls, the dark wraiths and of course.. the Four Kings who still hunger for humanity. Left unchecked it surely would have been Oolacile all over again.. Gywn's actions were extreme, there's no questioning that. It's no wonder some humans planned a revolt against the gods but I believe that he had humanities best interest at heart. In the end he burned himself into a husk if only to give us one last light to look to, even if it was a dying flame. If Gwyn is guilty of anything it is that he did not go gentle into that 'good' night. To me and a few others Gwyn is the most human character in Dark Souls. Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Though wise men at their end know dark is right, Because their words had forked no lightning they Do not go gentle into that good night. Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way, Do not go gentle into that good night. Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light. And you, my father, there on the sad height, Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray. Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Do Not Go Gently Into That Good Night-Dylan Thomas

I like a lot of what you have to say and it's one of the most interesting comments I've ever received. That being said, the mutated humans of Oolacile are not a result of the Abyss or Darkness, under the metal skeletal mask of a Darkwraith is just a man's face. The mutations of the Oolacile people is a result of Manus' influence over humanity which every human is thought to possess and humanity is also believed to be fragments of the Dark Souls -- The Pygmy's Lord Soul. The Pygmy is also believed to be Manus, hence his great influence and ability to contort and mutate those who possess it. This is mostly just my speculation, but there is some proof. New Londo acts like a control group in the experiment of what effects the abyss has on humans. The people of New Londo were not mutating and neither were the Darkwraiths who actually had direct contact with the Darkness. The only true difference between the Abyss in New Londo and the Abyss in Oolacile is Manus and his influence over humanity. I'll give you the soulmass creatures... I have no idea what the hell they are but I've always thought of them as like the congealed hatred manifestation of the dead bodies of humans who died during the flood. As for the Four Kings, I have a huge theory on them and how they're actually the greatest saviors of the lore (which I'll never share officially), but if I stay grounded to only slightly wild speculation, I just think they were mutated because they were in possession of a fragment of the Light Lord Soul (Gwyn's Lord Soul) and it didn't mix so well when they joined the dark. Anyway, love your insights and by no means is my video or theories on Dark Souls the end-all-be-all, that's the beauty of Dark Souls lore.
@TerraMantis10 жыл бұрын
Brent Ramsten Interesting stuff, I've heard a lot about the theories and workings of sorceries and whatnot, they're definitely fun to theorize about. But no, what I'm talking about is actually called Mass of Souls -- the blackend, tar-like lump of human bodies that don't respawn after being killed. They're in New Londo after you drain the city. darksouls.wikidot.com/mass-of-souls My bad, that's what I meant by "soulmass."

tiakpark He also said "No price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself." Knowing what happened in Oolacile, would you rather be a mutated cruel monster? Robbed from what it is to be human and be a slave to the dark? Sides that quote has little to do with tyranny or how power corrupts but more a commentary on how convictions or fanatical beliefs cloud people from seeing/accepting what is true. I really don't see how Gwyn was fanatical.. Every thing he did had a reason. Tyranny itself is defined by ruling with cruelty and unfairness but I don't see the unfairness in his choices. Only the burden of sacrifice, so much so that he burned his own soul for a seeming eternity to keep the fires of his light going. This is not the act of a man trying to keep himself in power but the acts of a man keeping the dark at bay. The pygmy may have fathered humanity but the way I see it Gwyn was a father to humanity... doing what ever it took to keep it safe in the light.

Brilliant video as always TerraMantis, your storytelling never ceases to amaze! Gwyn is such an awesome character. On the one hand, he's a callous tyrant, so afraid of the dark and his own downfall, he'd be willing to burn himself alive in a desperate act of pride. On the other, he's a 'magnificent father', who would sacrifice himself out of hope for the salvation of the world he cherished, and the people he loved. I'm gonna miss him in Dark Souls 2. :'(

Incredible narrative. You covered the scope of the story very well, and stated convincing evidence of Gwyn's distain for humans. I like how you pointed out the counterbalance of each soul found in the First Flame--death vs life, and light vs dark--and their corresponding founders. I never considered the Witch of Izalith as the Lord of Life until now; she founded pyromancy and bore children, whereas Nito simply spreads death. You nailed the important contrasts of Gwyn's Lord Soul to the Dark Soul. The Dark Soul threatens the Age of Fire, but ironically can be used to prolong it. I also found it interesting that "where humans thrive in great concentration," the light in the Age of Fire fades, inching closer towards the Age of Dark. Yet despite this fact, Gwyn overlooked the noble traits in humans.

I don't know if anyone picked up on it, but there was a mistake regarding the Witch of Izalith's attempt to duplicate the First Flame. This video says she used her Lord Soul and Pyromancy to do so, but Pyromancy didn't exist until after the attempt failed consuming the Witch of Izalith and creating a chaotic flame and the Bed of Chaos from which all demons come from and creating pyromancy. Before all this, the Witch of Izalith and the Daughters of Chaos wielded Fire Sorceries that were lost when they were consumed by the Flame of Chaos. You can verify this through the dialogue of Quelana.
@TerraMantis10 жыл бұрын
One item says that "Quelana of Izalith" is the "mother of pyromancy", and if you're the mother of something then you gave birth to it. Another item contradicts this by saying the Witch of Izalith (The Lord) was the mother of pyromancy when she was engulfed in her attempt to recreate the First Flame. I didn't get it wrong, I just chose which one I thought was canon because the game made the choice available. Item descriptions themselves are not always fact, they are legends of Lordran in and of themselves and legends aren't always accurate. Ascended Pyromancy Flame: Pyromancy flame drawing upon the latent power of Quelana of Izalith, mother of pyromancy. For the pyromancer, a flame is a precious thing indeed, to be nurtured, often for an entire lifetime. When the flame is shared, it creates an eternal bond between the parties. Demon's Catalyst: Demon catalyst formed from Izalith molten rock. Can be used as fire weapon. The Demon Firesage was the first demon, and the last master of the original fire arts before the Witch of Izalith was engulfed by Chaos, creating pyromancy Check out my Witch of Izalith video.
@darkwzrd410 жыл бұрын
TerraMantis The word "mistake" was a poor choice of words. I should have said "inaccuracy based on my understanding". But it is true. The Witch of Izalith didn't use pyromancy to create a new First Flame. Pyromancy was created when the witch failed to control what she created thus creating chaos which engulfed her and gave rise to pyromancy. In other words, it was Chaos, not the Witch of Izalith, that created pyromancy. Being that she did create Chaos, she is more like a grandmother of Pyromancy dispute what the item descriptions say This is what happens when the lore is left purposely vague so that people can draw there own conclusions.

Nice video TerraMantis, but there were a couple of things that don't really agree with in the video. So there is Artorias and most people seem to take it as fact that Gwyn ordered Artorias to go off to Oolacile and fight the new Dark threat, but to me it always seemed more likely that Artorias just took the initiative to go and fight the Dark in Oolacile rather than being directly ordered. And the other thing is you say Gwyn had a stroll down the ash dunes of the Kiln, but I always thought the ash was the remains of the fallen knights of Gwyn that burned when Gwyn linked the flame. That's why you can see the Ghosts as you enter the Kiln. So yeah food for thought.
@TerraMantis10 жыл бұрын
Thanks. You may very well be correct that Artorias was not ordered to go there, but Artorias was a knight and Gywn was his Lord, so it's a logical conclusion. If that's true though and he wasn't ordered to go, I think that's a strong indication that at one point he was the leader of the knights if 3 of the 4 decided to follow him there. As for the ash dunes, check out my 10 Things video finale. I talk about the construction of the kiln and blueprints a bit. I really think that ash was there as long as the kiln was there seeing as the arch tree that's there acts like a chimney; allowing all the smoke and ash from the First Flame to exhaust at the heart of the Fire Link. Thanks for watching and your insights.

Odin, all-father and king of the gods has pretty much dedicated his life to ensuring Ragnarok never comes to pass, but in doing so he only ends up marching right into it's creation, just like how Gwyn has dedicated himself to staving off the end of the age of fire, but through the loss of his greatest warriors and closest allies in trying to attain this goal, only ends up encouraging it's demise until he has to sacrifice himself. Of course, Odin was a fair bit less of a dick about things than Gwyn might have been. Which is REALLY saying something if you know the old stories.
