Maybe I'm just fucking insane, but Blighttown-proper ended up being one of my favourite areas in Dark Souls. I mean the framerate originally was total shite, but I really enjoyed the open verticality of the whole place. The swamp at the bottom kind of sucks but I'm just glad you can actually still run and roll through that place. I still have some kind of PTSD from the Valley of Defilement's second area in Demon's Souls - you're slowed to a crawl in that swamp and you can't run or roll to dodge at all, so if anything agros to you and you aren't great at parrying, you're fucked. Oh, and the enemies aren't affected and have no movement penalty so you're not getting away either. I am extremely disappointed to hear that they have done nothing to actually improve Lost Izalith. It was regarded as the weakest area by far, even by the developers themselves, and they admitted that the whole area as well as Bed of Chaos (or Bed of Bullshit, if you prefer) was rushed and unfinished. So I find it aggrivating that they did pretty much nothing about it.

Upper Blighttown is one of my favourite areas in the game as well. I think it's quite well designed.
@jokerzwild006 жыл бұрын
I agree, it's one of my favorite areas too. As far as Izalith both being fixed, From didn't remaster the game, it was outsourced. It's a given they wouldn't let an outside company create new content for the game. It would be great if From had don't this themselves the right way, but there is a reason it is unchanged, and it's not because From decided to leave it that way.

Blighttown and the swamp are fine. I really hate Ash Lake and Great Hollow though (before finding the lordvessel anyway). Mostly empty, the hydra is annoying to fight, easy to fall to your death when going through the tree, no shortcut back up. Shitty place.

@Spaced926 жыл бұрын
There's a fun sense of verticality, once you get to the bottom it's kind of shit though, it's kind of easy, the boss isn't too far (and doesn't fit the theme), basically it's stress free once you get the bottom firepit. Valley of Defiled is much worse (in a good way), but that numbed me to Blighttown. I hated the Valley so much.

Could not disagree with you more on warping. (And don't take this the wrong way, I enjoy your videos and find it to be an interesting design discussion point). Part of what made Dark Souls 1 charming was the brilliant world design. The ability to warp immediately cuts into that design. As an example, when I first played the game: Finding the shortcut from Undead Parish to Firelink Shrine was amazingly rewarding. It was like being able to go back home again, and quickly, especially after working my way past the Taurus Demon. By being able to warp off the bat, you completely destroy the relevance of that short cut, and many other paths the game created that works into its overall world and level design. There's another cool route from Darkroot Basin -> Valley of the Drakes, which then connects to multiple locations. This is now completely pointless when you add the ability to warp. And again, completely destroys the reward in discovering this. - Another note is that you also have to think a bit more when you set off somewhere. As another example, my first time playing I worked my way down the Catacombs and freaked out. Had I been able to warp out immediately, it wouldn't have meant anything. But, working my way back up ended up being an experience within itself, with more routes created specifically for that task. Dark Souls 1 is completely built around the idea that you can't warp. It's part of what I think makes the game so excellently designed, and I'm glad it's not something they added to to the remaster.

KC You sound like a religious appologist. "you are supposed to learn and explore" -> "BUT I'M NOT TOLD EVERYTHING, AND I ACTUALLY HAVE TO WALK!!!" Every single one of your points is an incredibly inane pile of smouldering bollocks. From acting as if repetition that forces you to work out a route, and overal get better at the game is just artificial difficulty, comparing rules of chess, to rules of a game that tells you the basics and makes you learn the details, you know, like a videogame, for some reason bringing up time into it, which is mostly irrelevant, the game can be played slowly, and dismissing even the concept of challenge. You don't understand something, so it's bad, great line of reasoning there. What is wrong with you ? You sound like someone's deadbeat dad trying to justify why mowing the lawn ever other day is a necessity.

And they did a bad job.
@Jajajaja775726 жыл бұрын
Sp0ck z0mbi3 Sure, my expectations were measured as this is just a remaster. I didn’t anticipate any major gameplay or mechanical changes. As a remaster, it’s bare minimum like Jim stated, but as a game it’s still quite strong, although it’s starting to show it’s age.
@voidwaiker54976 жыл бұрын
Qloc had some big changes for it completed or in progress, but were told to remove them. No clue who told them to remove the completed stuff though, most are saying Namco but to me that makes no sense. Why would the company who have invested money into the project ask them to remove things that are already completed making them a waste of time and money. It makes far more sense that fromsoft would find out about the stuff and ask them to remove them as they had no investment in the remaster and Qloc chose to respect their wishes.
@Jajajaja775726 жыл бұрын
VoidWalker What changes specifically if you don't mind me asking. I'm not familiar. It's typical for a remake/remaster project that if something works then don't change the code. If you see the SotC remake, much of the code for colossi and Agro are left untouched because it works. These people were given a job, they wouldn't do things out of their job requirement. Anything outside of that requires clearance. It's business. As far as those changes you mentioned, how drastic could they have been? They can't fix inherent problems like just bad boss design a la Bed of Chaos or Lost Izalith's rushed state because that's completely altering the game--making it more than a remaster. I imagine its more quality of life changes?
@voidwaiker54976 жыл бұрын
byeblackbird no one knows, just that they were large. Can’t even say if they were things like Izalith or major quality of life. The only thing we can rule out is game balance since they were scared it would end up worse than it was, thus why 10+ chaos zwei still exists.

@JustAndre926 жыл бұрын
See, I'm gonna be that guy who actually defends the Demon Ruins. Say what you will about the enemy placement feeling like an amateur _Doom_ mod (because it really, really does), but the fact that you're now fighting several of the early-game bosses as just regular enemies is one of those really gratifying "look how far I've come since the beginning" moments; the whole area (both bosses repurposed as enemies and its not one, not two, but three "proper" bosses) is basically one big boss rush. Not only that, but there's a lot of really clever misdirection at work with the way the Demon Ruins recycles things from earlier in the game. You fight your way through an area full of early-game bosses that's short and linear enough to avoid degenerating into an outright slog, you fight a slightly tweaked Stray Demon, and just when you think Ceaseless Discharge was the only new thing the Demon Ruins has to offer, bam - not two rooms away from the pushover Demon Firesage, you fight the area's _real_ closing boss: the Centipede Demon, which has more intricate little details in how it fights you and all the possible ways you can fight it than almost any boss in the game (probably owing to the fact that it was one of the first bosses they designed; you were originally supposed to fight it on the roof of the Undead Parish church, but they decided it didn't fit the locale and replaced it with the Bell Gargoyles instead). Even though it's a matter of public record that the Demon Ruins was a rush job, it's clear from looking at it that the developers went out of their way to work within the limitations placed on them and fashion the best experience they could out of it. ...Now, Lost Izalith, on the other hand, has all of the Demon Ruins' problems - haphazard enemy placement, recycled assets (those giant demons scattered across the lava field aren't even a unique design; they just took the back end of the Undead Dragon in the Painted World - an area that, like the Centipede Demon, was able to be so full of little details because it was actually one of the first things in the game that the guys at FromSoft worked on - and gave it some attack animations), and barebones level design - but none of its redeeming qualities. The whole third act of _Dark Souls_ is definitely weaker than the two that preceded it, but Lost Izalith is the only portion of the game that feels outright unfinished.

Blighttown is actually my favorite area :( I never played without DSFix so it worked fine for me. I really like the comfy feeling that I get from the sound of the torches burning and the hastily put-together wooden structures/houses, not to mention that I found the verticality was fun to explore. I also tryharded a little with the ninja set and spider shield on my first playthrough so I didn't have more trouble than other areas. The swamp part is just boring though.
@jokerzwild006 жыл бұрын
Lishe I agree. It's not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. There are plenty of little hidden things (and big hidden things), so many branching paths and things you could miss after 10 playthroughs, and the ambiance is great. It's dirty, grimy and does a good job of feeling poisonous and rotten. The swamp does suck, they always do in these games. I think that's the point but it's still not very fun. I like this area better than Anor Londo. Once you get past the beautiful architecture and soft lighting (before tits are popped) it's pretty barren. The only hard part is the silver knight archers. It's a pretty picture with no substance, with only the boss fight and Painted World entrance to make it good.

Still a slap in the face to PC users. It's a patch plain and simple. A patch that should have been done in 2011. To have the gall to charge for it is insulting considering similar "bare minimum" remasters have been routinely given away from free to previous owners of the original versions on PC in other cases. Also "optimize" for 60 fps? You mean that thing that took one guy 20 minutes in 2011 to achieve (not an exaggeration)? I'm aware some jumping physics were kind of funky with that 60 fps solution but again took him the length of a hard shit to manage that. I'm sure an entire studio of devs could have manged something better in half days work if they had actually given two fucks to bother trying.

I spent many an hour in blight town back in the day (I hate saying that...) "Git'n Gud" as it were. I was never bothered by the framerate so much because I'm used to playing N64 and PS1 games just as much as anything modern. I was more or less just amazed at how much detail was in Blight town. No wonder it ran so shitty! the game is rendering so much at once!

Slightly better particle effects, swaying bushes, worse lighting and shadering on certain surfaces, all in all a *3-4x jump in system requirements*, oh and you got ambient occlusion and other graphical choices in the Prepare to Die Edition with DSfix, and then add mods, for almost no impact on performance. Some bugs gone, others remain and are introduced again though were fixed apparently in Prepare to Die Edition.
@dannyboi58876 жыл бұрын
Thank you sir. The amount of people defending this shit just depresses me. They keep on spouting the same bollocks of "IZ JUST A REMASTER, IZ NOT MEANT TO FIX ANYTHING" But even then, graphically it doesn't even do the fucking REMASTERING right. Just a pure cash grabbing hack job from Bandai Namco and QLOC

@nathane52876 жыл бұрын
Because of comparisons, you can look up a video on youtube that will make things really clear for you, with footage side by side from each PC version, if you don't already have both version on your steam account to jump back and forth between. Also, let's say the Remaster would look even a tiny bit better than the Prepare to Die Edition with DSfix + mods, does that justify a 3x jump in system demands? Lazy optimization is a mark of incompetent devs, but this is bordering on anti optimization, taking a game, barely making any changes to it visually, and then making it run worse.
@Lillu7006 жыл бұрын
@Nathan E You're being dishonest. The game does not run worse; it indeed runs better. I have a fairly powerful system and can run the original more or less at 60, but there are some areas where the framerate dips. The new one runs butter smooth. The system requirements for prepare to die edition were for running it at 30fps.
@nathane52876 жыл бұрын
Compare their system requirements on the steam store pages, then compare footage, the old one was poorly optimized, but it still had lower requirements, meaning both are bad ports, but the original with some tinkering ran better on a wider range of hardware and looked at least equal in quality. Few dips here and there does not simply compare even closely to a 3x jump in system requirements. I ran Prepare to Die Edition on a 4 year old laptop in 720p60fps most of the time back in the day. Could I start up that laptop today, install the Remastered version, and expect on 720p to get 60fps constantly? If so, then I'll concede the argument, though still wonder why they falsely advertise on their storefront the system demands.
@MrTombombodil6 жыл бұрын
This Remaster is only barely more than DS-Fix to be frank. It should have cost 5-10 bucks for people who already owned the Prepare to Die edition. I honestly would have preferred a "Remaster" to Bloodborne to fix the frame-rate drops and let it run at 60fps on my PS4 Pro.

I was most interested in seeing that version out of all of them because fuck man, it's a handheld Souls. Also it's being remastered by a different developer, it will be interesting to see if there are any differences. From the little we've seen of the Switch version it looks closer to the original than the others.

@SheezyBites6 жыл бұрын
The fast travel is the worst part of the later games, and for that matter the latter part of this game. The exciting interconnectedness of the world, and cool shortcuts become practically a moot point (unless finding it and killing some bugs in there part of a character quest of course, but that's a pretty cheap way of making a shortcut valuable after you can just warp anywhere). I'll still be interested in your other points of course, but when one third of the quality of life improvements you've mentioned is ruining the game environment I am a little trepid.
@jokerzwild006 жыл бұрын
SheezyBites it does make the first part of the game unique, and the first time you play through it there are so many cool moments of "oh shit I'm here??" But on later playthroughs it does get annoying when you are in one of the areas that does require a good run to get somewhere else you need to be, and after playing Bloodborne and DS3 you get spoiled by that shit. Being able to instantly go upgrade your weapon to whatever level you want, or decide to go to your favorite farming/invasion location for a bit before getting back to advancing the game. I just wish they had been able to pull off the interconnectedness the whole way through.
@PhyreI3ird6 жыл бұрын
I don't agree that its a moot point at all. It might be slightly less cool (and I personally may have enjoyed it not being a thing til later) but it still lends really well to giving the world a cohesive realistic feel and makes it like you're actually working your way through a real world, which was a massive failing of the 2nd game which used warping as a crutch for their world layout imo, cuz they clearly just took the "Let's stitch these random things together with little to no reason behind their layout" approach to it.
@setsunahei006 жыл бұрын
You can choose not to teleport. Come on bruh.
@Tresskzilla6 жыл бұрын
Wes W you shouldnt have the option to begin with. Learn the layout of the world and this is a non issue. What you are suggesting would take away from the interconnectivity of the world and would dumb it down as a result. Tldr; stop being a casual
@SheezyBites6 жыл бұрын
Tressk I would like to distance myself from that response. I don't think it is casialisation, nor so I think that would be bad. It's a different design philosophy is all. That said I still feel it makes the game less interesting, especially in repeat playthroughs as it makes routing less exciting. Deciding to do things in a different order shows you a different path through the game (at least in the early stages), whereas with fast travel it completely negates that novelty. I've admittedly only replayed DS1, but that's because I've had little inclination to do so for 2 and 3, whereas I had plenty for DS1.

@SDREHXC6 жыл бұрын
I don't know what jims homeland is but its pronounced pre "seh" dence in both American and British English so I'm not sure where you guys are getting the "see" from. Even though the word might be derived from precede the way you say it is altered because of the suffix that is added. The suffixes also have Es so you drop the e from the word precede prior to adding them or the word would be precedeent. Dropping the E from precede makes "preced" then you add "ent" or "ence". Maybe in some accents or dialects people say it a different way but it is definitely not the "proper" way, if the proper way even really matters as long as the point is conveyed.

And now that Dark Souls got away with an overpriced update, cue more remasters being released in this fashion. I didn't even know Dishonored got an update but in Bethesda's defense (and I don't even like them to begin with), they did give the Skyrim remaster for free to anyone who already had the game. Meanwhile, I have a 50% discount on this thing that never sounded worth the hassle to begin with. For the same price, I can get a brand new game that I've never played before. It's sad that Jim Fucking Sterling Son, one of the most critical... critics... is letting this thing get away just because it's Dark Souls, so why not eh? Arguments like that are why EA has been getting away with their shit show for so many years (and I actually personally know people who say "it's EA and they're awful but OH MY GOD WOULD YOU LOOK AT THIS FLASHY BRAND AND HOW AWESOME THIS GAME LOOKS so of course I'm gonna give them a pass"). That this took precedence over the whole discussion about this remaster and that Jim is basically gushing over it dissipated the string of hope I had in the gaming community. Good night, folks. Get ready for more business practices no one likes and yet, no one has the psychological strength to fight against by not supporting such practices. You better brace yourselves cuz if the industry goes full on the MMO business model, we're all fucked big time. Just have a look at Nexon and what Pearl Abyss + Kakao Games all do with their games.

FromSoftware is on my watch list. I have no idea how they could be so bold as to charge for this patch to "fix" Dark Souls on PC, and then pull the original Dark Souls so people have to buy this... Dark Souls Re"mastered" on PC is a scam. *EDIT: I don't care who "fixed" it... I care about the original being pulled from Steam. I care about who is making the business decisions. Who's making the money? Are you people saying FromSoftware had nothing to do with the publishing or distribution of this game? They also weren't the ones who pulled down the original? They also aren't making any money off of this? If that's all true, please let me know. That would be awesome if FromSoftware has 0 say in this garbage.*

Can be "smo" or "smoff" imo. The Japanese name is "スモウ" (sumou) and the design obviously comes from sumo wrestlers (even his squatting stance), though Hawkeye Gough pronounces his name as "goff" in the English version despite it being spelled "ゴー" (gou) in the Japanese version. I feel like the sumo stuff makes it pretty obviously that Smough is "smo" tho.
