I've had such fun guiding people who are obviously new to the game. Using gestures to guide them towards secrets, showing them the ins and outs and helping them fight the bosses for their first time. It's a really rewarding time! Oh, and then I invade them half a hour later and mercilessly put them down. Good times had by all.

Apparently it's compressed from the original's 41kHz to 16kHz for the Switch version. 16kHz sound in a 2018 game is a joke. For perspective: Most PS2 games had an audio sample rate of 24kHz or higher...

I think most fans are actually HAPPY the game has the original graphics. The “enhanced” visuals from other platforms just looks off.

It's not the original graphics. It's remastered, then scaled down. If you want clear evidence of this, compare lighting effects especially on armor, and fire particle effects. The end result is some effects are clearly modern but lower end and some textures look a bit 2011ish (some walls and floors). Compare to Skyrim Switch, it looks a lot like that. Although a bit worse tbh. Altogether it is clearly better than the original but it's also compromised. if you're a graphics snob you probably don't own a switch anyway so who cares, performance and controls matter on a port more than anything else. The audio is annoying but nothing game breaking.

Pegasi, go watch the Digital Foundry video. This Switch version uses the assets and lighting from the 2011 original, and actually cuts down on the particle effects and PP effects compared to the original on Xbox 360. And the audio might not be game breaking for you, but it is for a lot of people. It uses a sample rate of 16kHz, compared to the 2011 original's 41kHz. Most PS2 games had better audio quality...

It's 2018, I've played all the Souls game multiple times, about 1422 times each, and yet. Each time a player, a person, joins a game or i join them and we can't speak or interact in any way but moving a muppet on a screen is just so wonderous to me. That never gets old, truly.

I have this game and in my opinion it runs great, in fact it actually runs better on the Switch (handheld) than it did on Xbox 360. Obviously it doesn't hold up against the PS4 version, but who expected it would. The frame rate is way better than the original version and there are a few graphical tweaks over the original version too. What I find funny is how it runs better (frame rate) in handheld mode over docked, but I rarely use the dock. I got my Switch as a handheld console given I own all of the other platforms and as a handheld it doesn't disappoint. So far the only game I've had issues with on the Switch is Wasteland 2. Unfortunately the devs didn't remove the bugs that were present in the PS4/PC versions, and it's definitely not optimised very well at all. Doom and Skyrim run way better on the Switch than Wasteland 2 does which is strange given they're way more demanding which is why I feel the studio didn't optimise it properly. I had put around 50hrs into Wasteland 2 and to say I was addicted would be an understatement, but I've now ran into a game breaking bug and as such my love affair with Wastleand has come to an end.

It runs better because it has the exact same textures and lighting as the Xbox 360 version, but has cut down effects (things like fire look noticeably worse on Switch over X360). It also runs at a higher resolution when docked (1080p compared to 720p on 360), and uses a dynamic resolution to keep the frame rate as close to locked 30fps as possible, by dropping to 900p when the Switch starts struggling. This drops to a constant 720p in handheld mode, which explains the more consistent performance in that mode (The Switch's built-in screen is only 720p, so it makes sense to render at that res in handheld mode). I don't understand why (other than marketing) they called this "remastered", because it uses nothing of the actual remastered version's improvements. It's a fairly shoddy port of the 2011 Xbox 360 version. The decision to drop the audio sample rate from 41kHz to 16kHz is a puzzling one, as it would have barely saved any space on the cart, even a 4GB cart would have been enough to fit the entire 360 version on, and even if they wanted to save space they could have done so easily by compressing other things that wouldn't affect the game's overall quality so dramatically. I mean, the average sample rate on PS2 was 24kHz ffs...

I have experienced some sound issues as well, but the problem isn't in the quality of the sound itself. Sometimes, my footsteps just go silent, happening a lot entering the woods after the first titanite demon. I haven't played it too much, but that issue comes to mind. If it happens elsewhere is yet to be seen.

I’m surprised Jim didn’t dislike the audio more. As someone who plays 1000 times over I figured he’d be acutely tuned to the various sounds, you know like Pavlov. But as he had said many times over, he primarily bought the switch version for mobile and he notes that the mobile audio is fine since the tiny, tinny speakers are a bit shit anyway. All I can figure is it comes down to summon sign location or level. I've been putting my sign by the bonfire in the Depths at level 26, and I'm generally summoned an average of 15 seconds later. Quelagg I haven't started co-opping with yet, but her I usually go to at lvl 40. I have noticed the hit lag, but it's really weird cause it seems like it lasts for a minute or two, but then it clears up.

One thing that bugs me is the buttons for menus are still using layouts for the other systems. Which us fine if you could reconfigure it for the menus to switch defaults. Every other switch game uses A to enter/accept while here it is B, so I keep hitting the wrong button. Also not paying for online, so stuck playing alone.

I've never been addicted to a substance, but I imagine that a perfect high is like playing Dark Souls for the first time, then I chase that feeling through other games and Souls-like games and sequels to Dark Souls, etc. And while I've never sucked a d for Dark Souls, it does have those addictive properties. Like Jim Sterling, I wish I could experience this game fresh every time I played it. This is just such a perfect game to me. Every enemy and weapon is hand placed and the QA on this game was phenomenal. And the game rewards players who find shortcuts and sequence break the game with more powerful weapons and items paired with genius level design. I love Dark Souls. Thank god for Jim Sterling!
