I've got it on my first Dark Souls playthrough ever. years ago, from the very first Black Knight. Was so hyped because of it, I knew it was a chance drop because my brother had played before and he didn't get one. The sword really made the game a breeze even though it was my first time playing DKS - and that's why it's my favorite weapon in the entire series.

I'm now in the Artorias of the Abyss DLC, and the BK sword and shield have got me through all of the game to this point. Only got two bosses left in the DLC and Gwyn to finish the game.

I remember my first playthrough, and getting the Black Knight Sword. I loved it as I ended up getting the Claymore, using that up until I got the stats for the Black Knight Sword. And I stuck to the Black Knight Sword, and made the Claymore Divine for fighting Skeletons so I could have both.

Ah this lovely thing....brings lots of memories of my first playthrough. Funny enough, I also got a black knight shield early in my playthrough, which was my main shield throughout. once I found that black knight armor, and found it worked great for me, it just felt meant to be.

It sure can level it up to +5 with twinkling titanite and it can 1 shot weaker enemies and 3 shot most stronger ones.

+WHEATTHlNS It can. But just be aware- even when you can kill enemies easily, you can still get killed very easily yourself in dark souls. When I first got this weapon, I went to undead parish. I could kill the balder knights in 1-2 hits... and the most threatening thing for me was the horde of basic zombies that were waiting in ambush. Because one can hit you, and then another three come up and do that 6 hit combo where the they just flail wildly. And I could 1-2 shot these kind of enemies any way with my regular weapons already. I'll admit that my great sword game was not very good right after getting this weapon, but the general point is made. It is hard to get a free ride in dark souls. But this weapon still means you aren't tied up with enemies for as long.

I got this sword from the knight in the burg, and it carried me so hard through the game, the only time I changed my weapon was when I got the Great sword from the knight in the Kiln. This is definitely one of my favorite weapons in dark souls!

found this sword on my second playthrough right off the bat. put it on instantly. every time I got a new weapon that worked for my build, I tested it out.... then switch back to the black knight sword. I even tried out the smough hammer, then I went straight back to my black knight sword. my mage build started giving me a dirty look after that....

I know people say the black knight sword is overpowered but honestly you can buy and smith a bastard sword to +5 extremely fast right after character creation. No it's not as powerful as a black knight sword, but it is damn powerful in early game.

Barbed Straight Sword next! Also, you could do a little fun fact about the barbed straight sword, in the fact that it says in the in-game description that it deals only thrust damage, and if you compare the descriptions of a standard upgraded Barbed Straight Sword and any other upgraded path I believe (I know for sure on the Enchanted Barbed Straight Sword) the last paragraph (or phrase..? Section?) the last part of the descriptions are different between them. Just a neat little fun fact.

I took a regular Barbed Straight Sword +5 and the description read as such: Barbed Straight Sword +5 The choice weapon of the infamous...(more text)...his favorite weapon. >>This frightful sword deals only thrust attacks, and causes heavy bleeding. Note the attack type of a Barbed Straight Sword +5 is ONLY "Thrust". Now as a Raw Barbed Straight Sword (no upgrade) it reads: The choice weapon of the infamous......his favorite weapon. >>The sharp spikes of this ghastly weapon cause heavy bleeding. It no longer mentions thrust attacks, and the attack type has now changed to: "Regular/Thrust".

MrIwont4get Interesting, that's odd as to why the regular description says only "Thrust" damage, and the elemental path has it say "Regular/Thrust". Maybe it does deal literally "thrust" damage? Instead of Slash/Strike for the standard upgrade path, and has the damage distributed by the target's Thrust defense, as opposed to Slash or Strike defense. But it should have benefited from the Leo ring if that were the case..

Fisk Lione it says that it deals thrusting damage but it doesnt. if it did then it would get the benefit of counter attacks, and the leo ring would work

I love this weapon except for the highly punishable and risky R2's. Its strong but the claymore is much better if you prefer convenient pokes.

I liked it during my first playthrough. Used it from Sens Fortress to Ornstein and Smough. But had to replace it there, because if I accidentally used one of the slow-R2's, for example when trying to do a jumping attack but misstime it and use the normal R2 instead -> can't move for several seconds -> dead

from my experience the black knight halberd has the highest drop rate, on the xbox and ps3 I always got at least one halberd per playthrough

I don't really get why you keep saying "It can carry you through the game" with such repetition. Like, what does that even mean? MOST of the weapons in Dark Souls can carry you through the game. That's what they're for. Sure, I get that some weapons have more specific niche use and don't work as well against bosses, (daggers), and some are better for stuff like PVP, and some are just bad (Broken swords, whips), but there's absolutely tons of weapons you can get at the start of the game that can "carry you" through it. The zweihander can be found literally less than a minute from firelink shrine. The claymore can be found on the hellkite bridge. The longsword and battle axe can be bought from Andre. The halberd is found extremely close to Andre. The reinforced club and hand axe can be bought from the undead merchant. Several of the spears can be found/bought really early, including the spear, the winged spear, and the pike. And that's not counting all the other similar weapons/possible drops that you could get, which you likely will get at least a few of, like several of the blackknight weapons, the broadsword, the balder side sword, the bastard sword, the falchion, the murakumo, the gargoyle tail axe, the demons greataxe, the mace, the gargoyle halberd, ect ect ect. I believe that every weapon I just mentioned can be found before ever even going to the depths or blightown, or before even ringing the first bell, and all of these can quite easily take you through the game without issue if you're using them properly/to their max potential. I found like half of these before I even rung the first bell. Hell, if you took the master key as a gift, even more doors are opened up regarding the kind of stuff you can find early. The point is, saying something can carry you through the game doesn't really mean anything. Does the black knight sword have a high base damage? Sure, and I guess that can carry you for a little while if you only consider weapons in their un-upgraded form, but eventually (by which I mean rather quickly relative to how long the game is), you'll still need to upgrade it to keep up with enemies, like you'll need to do with any weapon, only this one requires twinkling titanite to do so, and by the time to get enough of that to upgrade it 2 or 3 times, you can upgrade any of those other weapons to plus 10 with regular/large shards, by which point, the weapons are on more equal grounds, and the poor scaling and difficulty in upgrading the sword have caught up with it, which will likely be by before you even reach sens fortress (I say this based on my recent playing of the remastered, and getting enough large titanite through basic gameplay to get my zwei to +10 before ever entering sens). My point is, there's so many options available from the very start of the game that are just as good as the black knight sword that are a guaranteed find/purchase at the start of the game, and apart from early bonus of high base damage from the black knight sword, which rather quickly stops meaning anything as you find shards, there's no reason to think that it can carry you through the game more than any of those other options. That said, I will give you this. If you are lucky enough to have this weapon drop, and then are again lucky enough to find and kill enough crystal lizards, while possibly also needing to look up a guide to find stuff like how to get to the great hollow to actually kill enough of them (which a normal player likely wouldn't find starting out), while also saving enough souls to afford upgrading it, then it absolutely is possible for you to get a max level black knight sword before getting a max level normal weapon, which will certainly help through anor londo. But then again, right after anor londo, you can immediately travel to the new londo ruins, drain the water, get the very large ember (though to be fair, again, a normal player not using a guide wouldn't know about this exact location), and then upgrade whatever other weapon you have to +15. But sure, if you, as a new player who doesn't know about those main locations, SOMEHOW manage to get lucky enough, or decide to farm stone soldiers for however long it takes to get enough twinkling titanite, then yeah, I guess that this weapon will be relatively powerful for a decent chunk of the game compared to the other options available. Again though, it it a weapon that doesn't even have a guaranteed drop, and relies on some level of luck to have enough materials to actually upgrade it further than other weapons. So yeah, under a specific set of partially lucky circumstances, this weapon can do you better compared to other weapons for part of the game, but I hardly think it's fair to say it can carry you through the game when so many other early game weapons can do the exact same thing without any worry of this luck element. Not that it's not a great weapon, it is, but such meaningless praises seem pretty unnecessary to me. The only weapon I can really say that actually deserves a statement like this would be the black knight halberd, since the base damage is absolutely monstrous for a lower level player who hasn't raised up their strength or dexterity yet, and it will likely do far better than a majority of weapons during a majority of game time for a player on their first run through. Great vid though. I love your weapon showcases, even re-watching them 4 years later, they'll just as good as they always were.

I didn't get it till almost the end of my 1st playthrough. I use it in the remastered now. People say it makes the game easy but it wasn't easy for me except for the already easy bosses like asylum, stray, firesage demons. Capra, Taurus, pinwheel, and gargoyles, ceaseless discharge. Gonna stop myself and realize that most of the bosses in ds1 were easy in comparison to others in the series. And it wasn't because of the bks. I only used it for seath and gwyn on my first run.

When I saw the base on the black knight weapons (I didn't get any until Kiln of the First Flame, at which I got drops about 90% of the time) I felt soo dumb.

scaling means its damage scales with a stat. a scaling in strength means its damage scales alot with your strength stat. d means it only scales a little. so if you have a weapon that A scales in strength you want a lot of strength to increase the damage as much as possible.

i used this sword with havel armor I just stood in bosses attack and was soaking all damage just had to heal and quick attack heal quick attack heal quick attack and bam boss dead. Used the ring that reduced physical damage and the ring that increased hp stamina and load used grass crest shield kept it on my back for stamina regen and two handed this black knight sword ! I killed Gwyn on my second attempt killed him in 6-8 shots with regular strikes my stamina could handle me swinging it 5 time without stopping. I am 6-1 in Pvp on this gameplay lost 1 because i used a shield on my left hand instead of going full 2 hand.
