Listen when it comes to singing, even the original guys didn't always have it down (especially in the later years), it's really all about the jamming and these guys nail it

all the hate im seeing in the comments... people seemed to have forgot what music is about. just listen to it and let go, let it flow over you, stop nitpicking it, just enjoy.. jeez people.. learn to relax abd not take everything so seriously.

Closest you'll come to the real thing when it comes to Jerry's pickin. These guys are great, the vibe of people are great. If you ever want to get somewhat close to what it felt like when Jerry was alive this comes close out of all cover bands. If I close my eyes I can force myself to pretend I'm almost back in late 80s at a show. God how I miss those days. These guys musically are great vocally they need some work.

like the Dead, they have their ON and OFF days. Dead and Company w/ John Mayer is not bad though.

Lan Tran dark star orchestra are as close to the Grateful Dead as I’ve ever heard, and I saw a lot of Grateful Dead shows back in the day as well as a number of dead cover bands through the years. Dead and Company shows are fun because of the scene and crowd energy, so I’m not saying their shows are a waste of time. That said, dead and co are at best an OK dead cover band. Mayer is a fine musician but doesn’t have the jerry phrasing and bounce that Jeff does in dso. Jeff’s solo playing along with the wonderful playing of the other dso members and band as a whole transport one to that magical place to which the dead offered passage from 1965-1991 and on rarer occasions afterward up until Jerry’s death. My comments are meant more as a strong compliment to dso than as a criticism of Mayer or dead and co.

***** Yet always, always, always that little extra 5-10% of signature deftness, intelligence,wit and sophistication is absent in whomever emulates Jerry. It always seem to me his unique genius was most recognizable in the very moment of onset in the attack of each note and right at the trailing edge - just a flicker of personal touch that couldn't be imitated. But kudos to DSO for sure. Only time I ever saw them live was in the early 90s in Northern California before a crowd of maybe 120. Like you, I'm generally very leery of cover bands - heck, I sometimes resented when the boys had guest musicians at shows. It always meant Jerry played less :-( The Vicious Hippies out of Santa Cruz had , at least at one point in their varying roster, a bass player who for the life of me I couldn't distinguish from early-seventies Phil. They played at the beach campsite after the shows at '84 Ventura, drawing a big crowd, many of whom were convinced in the darkness that Lesh was sitting in.

***** "that little extra 5-10% of signature deftness, intelligence,wit and sophistication"--very well put! but let me add my KUDOS to Jeff Mattson. I definitely think he's the best one out there. He's been doing this a LONG time. I saw him live with Volunteers back in 80-something, and he was very good then. As for that "little extra" 5-10%. I guess it's like that 5% of DNA that separates man from chimpanzees....or as Maxwell Smart used to say "missed it by THAT much!". Jerry Garcia was an ARTIST.

Seth Fleishman Agreed! I saw JM play with the JGB at a tiny club in Portland Or, man did he, Melvin and that band tear it up..and as Bill graham said about Jerry & the boys - "they're not the best at what they do, they're the only ones who do what they do", well stated Uncle Bobo.

Whereas The Grateful Shred sound youthful and energetic like the late 60’s and early 70’ s these guys are much closer to the late 80’s and early 90’s shows. The lead guitar is impressive, and even the the voice is faded like Jerry’s became with time. I still prefer Grateful Shred, but haven’t seen to much from these guys to really have a set opinion.
@AmericasChoice4 жыл бұрын
That late 60's early 70's sound is hard to duplicate. I was in a couple of GD cover bands in the late 70's and those tunes were a challenge. We worked up a pretty decent Morning Dew, New Minglewood Blues, Dire Wolf and Easy Wind. Getting that early tone isn't easy. I like Dark Star Orchestra. The bassist is better than Otiel, who doesn't even try to sound like Lesh. Lead guitarists always seem to throw too many notes at the progressions. Garcia was always pretty careful about hitting the melodic center.
