My Father, a Master Lighterman, told me that if a body was found in the River, you got two shillings if you towed it to one side if the River, and two shillings and sixpence if you towed it to the other bank. I cant remember which side paid what though

I got a bit of a surprise when the RRS Discovery was mentioned! I'm from Dundee, the new home of this ship which was built here when our docks had shipbuilding facilities. It was interesting to hear about "Arctic Jack" being in the force and how the ship was used after its sojourn to colder climes! ❤

Had occasion to view the Metropolitan Police list of officers who had died on active duty from Victorian times to the present. The amount who died in the docks, after 'falling in the water at night' was surprising, to say the least.

Thank you for your wonderful cultural documentary channel. As always iam gathering main information about topics you mentioned briefly here it’s first of river Thames is symbol of city endurance and resilience. It’s only river in Europe have national trail following entire length, also winds away all three areas of outstanding natural beauty. Story goes back over 30 million years ago when river Thames was once tributary of river rhine because Britain was not island . In 1700s river served as major hub for thriving British empire. In 1858 hot summer elevated stench to under able level resulted episode known as great stink . Folklore of river Thames themes has been as site of pagan ritual , sacred ritual and popular celebration since ancient times. Ghosts , strange stories, lurk within tunnels, tributaries and sewers . Monsters of river tales and ideas of serpents goes back hundred of years . In 17 th century whale appeared in deep ford and black wall and were quickly killed. Shark watch annual register in 1787 . In 19 th century whale beached in wool which and met similar fate . Thank you for giving us chance to read and learn new information and improve our English as well. Best wishes for you your loved ones.

I thoroughly enjoy these productions having spent considerable time on both the tidal and non-tidal Thames back in the 70s and owning a series of boats over succeeding decades.... working with 'Waterman', wonderful characters, learning the natural laws of the river, how to navigate the twisting course of the river through a dark night, how to decide whether it's safe to attempt a transit of a particular bridge at a particular state of the tide, is there enough depth ? Is there enough headroom to pass under ? How Not to attempt to lift a body from the water after its soaking over a lengthy period... and that to bring the body to the Surrey shore at Richmond will get you an award of only one pound whereas if we'd tied up on the Middlesex shore we'd have earned one pound ten shillings... so a young policeman told me.. we weren't tempted to cast off and relocate to the opposite shore.

The thames torso murders have always interested me in that they are equally as brutal as the rippers, happened at the same time and was never a priority in the media or with the police despite that killer being just as dangerous if not more than the ripper and certainly better at escaping undetected. The ripper got lucky. At least once maybe more times he was close to being caught in the act. The torso killer took no such risks.
