19:57 Brocken means "big lump" or in this specific case "big boulder" in German. When you lift your growing child or an unexpectedly heavy dog, for example, you could say, "Wow, what a brocken!" to indicate that they're more massive than you thought they'd be. If you throw up and get to see some of your lunch coming back in a still mostly solid form, that's a "small brocken". Don't try that at home ☝ THE Brocken is the tallest mountain in the Harz range in central Germany. It's often misty there, and it has some weird natural lighting. The giant Brocken spectre is essentially a person's own shadow appearing in front of them, super enlarged by the water droplets of the mist. It's so common, that depending on the local weather you can accurately predict that you're going to see it.

I lived 22 years in Humboldt, on the Coast-- in the Coast Redwood Forest, with the Magical, Ancient Mountains to the East, & Beautiful Mother Pacific, with Her Giant, Ancient Stones, to the West. Never saw "Dark Watchers", but had three Sasquatch encounters of which I was clearly, explicitly AWARE. Once I became aware of the Sounds & Signs, I realized that I had been surrounded by them all the time, whilst in the Forests & Mountains. It is definitely a Vortex, as is Mt. Shasta. Crazy cool experiences in Shasta. California is pure Beauty & Magic. I cannot wait to get back, as soon as I possibly can. 💗 California is my Home. Deep in the Ancient Coast Redwoods is the _only_ place where my Soul has ever felt Peace & belonging on this Earth. It's the only place where I can exhale, relax, & know that _EVERYTHING IS OK, & IS GOING TO BE OK._ I am away, tending to my widowed Father, at present, in a place I spent the bulk of my childhood & used to Love. But, nothing & nowhere compares to California. I'm feeling that Song from the 90s..." Nothing Compares To You". "Its been three years, six months, & eleven days since I went away..." 💔

The La Diablesse sound a lot like the British Isles entity the Glaistig. She is a water faerie that is part woman, part goat. She hides her goat-like legs under a long, flowing dress. She lures men to dance with her, then feeds on them like a vampire. She has a nice side though, she is kind to old people, and will take care of children, and sometimes help farmers by herding cattle.

I used to live in norcal. Was camping at panther beach when around 2 or 3 am, a whoooole procession line of tall figures in mostly black (some red) robes came out with torches, formed a circle where they faced each other and looked like they were chanting at a level too low for us to hear for about 20 minutes. Aside from the torches they had, the moon was VERY bright that night. They walked elegantly but they did walk. We were only like 100-150 feet away so we all saw them very clearly. it was so odd and we all thought we were witnessing a cult ritual so we just stayed still and quiet. Then, when they were done, they filed out like they had arrived. never heard of the dark watchers until literally today but yes, they are real and frequent the coastlines of northern california, at least around 18 years ago they did.

their robes looked like the ones with the pointy tips in the stills. They didnt float but they did move elgantly stiff. Couldnt make out any faces due to shadows but the robes looked...expensive. Like, the material was movie quality, not from the halloween store. Also, and it didnt strike me as anything other than odd, but there must have been some sort of equinox going on cuz less than an hour later, the tide rose up more than fifty feet and we had to grab our shit or get washed out to sea like our stupid tent did lol

@@47Jonesy Seen them at Coronado by the haunted Hotel Del and Naval Air Base, heard pigs squealing or being sacrificed. Saw them on Blacks Beach in La Jolla from the cliffs above, or what we assume were them cuz like you say they formed a circle of torches which then began to not look like torches anymore, and began doing impossible dances and physics defying shit like merging, becoming one, splitting out into various numbers and patterns and flipping before becoming one then all again. Crazy fkg shit goes on in this world, brudda, and we ruled over by psychopaths. Cheers, stay safe

Sounds very catholic. Flagellants (look it up) will have processions somewhat like what you described, albeit in Spain and Italy . They mostly have white robes, which is a very jarring sight for an American, but I’ve also seen them in red, black and green robes. I definitely recommend looking them up, it’s quite a scene.

I saw one of these "watchers" when I was a boy. I didn't know it was a local legend until years later. When I approached a man on a trail during a hike with my father, after we had separated and I had run far ahead on the path, I came upon a man dressed this way. At first, I noticed that he looked odd, but I grew up Catholic and was used to seeing priests sometimes dressed strangely (all in black formal robes). On this day it was overcast and there was fog, so you couldn't see things clearly unless you were standing close to them. As I approached this man that day, the closer I got, I was expecting to see his face and hair. I looked away at some point, I took my eyes off him until we were walking side-by-side, but when I looked up at him he seemed to be nothing but cloth. He certainly wasn't motionless the entire time, and seemed to walk the path with me. No features, just a shape, like when women wear a burka. I didn't think of it as frightening, he didn't give off any kind of threatening vibes, but I was also a child. I stared at him as we both walked along the path, noting that his clothes didn't seem to end at his neck. For all I know it could literally have been an actor dressed as one of these folk legends, playing a trick. I didn't know about it, so I missed out. In any case, I stopped to wait for my father, as the man walked ahead of me. We didn't see him on the path again for the rest of the day.

I live somewhat near SLO. As a Californian, I appreciate you guys getting the pronounciation of the towns correct. There is a Chumash casino nearby, where there are a lot of stories of people driving on the 154 and reporting some sort of witch in their rearview flying at them like chasing them. Not on a broom mind you, just flying and more like a banshee than the cartoonish witch description we all know. Once they reached a certain road marker, the entity would be gone when they checked their rearview again. There's a lot of wrecks that happen on that stretch of road. It's an even more local legend. It would be interesting to see what you guys can find on this. Back in the 90s, my dad drove that stretch of road, and to this day, he brings up a story about when he was in his 20s him and some friends were on that road at night. They were in an old van, his friends were passed out drunk in the back row. If you know, vans you know there are 3 rows, driver and copilot, 2nd row passengers, and 3rd row passengers near the back hatch. So no one was near my dad as he drove. He says that as soon as he reached the section of road that is supposedly haunted by that entity, he felt his seat belt being tugged hard from the section that goes across the waist. He said he thought it was his friends messing with him. Eventually, he got fed up with the repeated pulling, and he looked back to yell at them, but he realized they were all fast asleep and snoring in the 3rd row. He said he felt the hairs on his arms stand on end and a chill down his back. He drove faster, and when he hit the particular road marker where the entity disappeared, the pulling on his deatbelt stopped. When he got home, an owl flew down onto the ground and would not let him reach his front door. It would hoot at him, spread it's wings and charge at him. This must've been shortly before daybreak because he said the owl eventually flew away when it was getting lighter outside. He said not long after he decided to sell the van because the middle row floor randomly started developing massive wet spots, despite no one ever using or leaving any drinks in that row. He would put towels and carpet squares down to try and prevent/dry it off. Each time he would check, the top layer of carpet would be dry, the 3rd layer would be dry, but the middle layer would be soaking wet, dripping with a ton of water. It freaked him out, so he sold it.

The horse legged lady might be the Native American deer lady. The following is from Wikipedia Deer Woman, sometimes known as the Deer Lady, is a spirit in Native American mythology whose associations and qualities vary, depending on situation and relationships. To women, children, and men who are respectful of women and children, she is associated with fertility and love. However, to those who have harmed women and children, she is vengeful and murderous, and known to lure these men to their deaths. She appears as either a beautiful young woman with deer feet or a deer.

I have had many, many UFO & orb sightings, a Time Slip, & innumerable encounters with ghosts, demonic entities, & things I have no idea how to classify, in Magical Northern California. In addition to my Sasquatch encounters. California is the most fascinating, Beautiful, intriguing, & Magical place I've ever been. There are many Vortices of various kinds--very Magical, Beautiful, & of very, very differing kinds, in Northern California. Utah is the second most beautiful, Magical, & high-strangeness place I've ever been. Definitely a Vortex, or, actually, a CLUSTER of Vortices. But, outside of Southern Utah, in the red rock areas & Zions, it feels darker. California feels Lighter, more Loving, & far more Natural, & *_WHOLESOME,_* than does most of Utah. Southern Utah has great Beauty, & a more WHOLESOME, Natural, Light, & Loving Energy than does the rest of Utah. Definitely worth visiting & exploring. The Big Sur area and surrounding mountains is etherally beautiful. Back in the 90s, I was camping in the Santa Lucia (I always pronounced it ch) Mountains. It was a beautiful, warm, summer evening. I glanced up to the mountain ridge to the west of our campsite. It was dusk and the sky had a light, purplish tinge. Way, way up on the top of this ridge, I saw a lone figure illuminated against the fading light. Abnormally tall, dressed all in black, wearing what looked like a cloak or duster and a wide brimmed black hat! This figure stood absolutely still, facing our campsite. I remember feeling a tightness in my stomach, which was soon followed by a nameless dread. I watched this figure for hours, it never moved and when the nearly full moon rose, I coukd see it quite clearly. I got bored a few times and did other things around camp but whenever I glanced up, it was there. I eventually fell asleep and at sunrise, the figure had vanished. I was very intrigued and did some research, which is when I discovered the Dark Watcher stories. To this day, I am absolutely convinced that is what I saw.

42:05 I'm sure Dark Watchers can't be explained by a Brocken specter and Glories.. 🙂 high in mountains I've seen this once: in winter, mountain was emerged in clouds, so sparkly ice crystals were everywhere, then shadow torso with glory rainbow appeared about 3m=10ft in front of me, slightly above me. It took me a second that I realized I'm looking at my own shadow, whole vision was incredibly wonderful and otherworldly, but there was no "presence" felt in that gray soft shadow. This Brocken-specter shadow appeared when I was turned down the slope towards the south and the sun, so my guess is that sunlight coming through the fog was reflected from snowy mountain slope behind me, casting this shadow inside the rainbow ball in front of me - that's also why it was not at once obvious I'm looking my own shadow, bc slope worked probably like a many mirrors for the light. Long ago I encountered two shadow people, and that was completely different, I felt piercing presence and that "shadow" was like a black void, much like dark watchers are described.

I think Santa Lucia (see ah) is correct, if it is from Spanish origin, you don't put a "ch" sound on the c. If its Italian, then its Loocheeah (pronounciation). As for dark watchers, is it possible that Odin and some buddies are watching? I mean, some of the descriptions remind me of Odin. He has a staff. Also, there is the raven connection with him. He could be a shapeshifter but I can't confirm that in the lore.

I just wanted to say as a Chumash native we are not extinct lol (always find it so weird when you look up a lot of natives that are still around like we aren't anymore but that's a whole different subject)l and we do have tales of keepers of the land not sure about the hat thing in the tales it's not really mentioned more so just to not interfere with them in short. I would have to ask some family.

On the off chance that nobody has commented this before: The "Brocken" spectre is definitely called that because it was first recorded in the Brocken region, which is clearly stated in the German wikipedia page, but not in the english one unfortunately. So at best it's a whole spectre on a broken mountain, but even that is iffy since there are as much as 4 different theories as to why the mountain is called "Brocken". The root word could be "broke", which is the same as for "broken" in English, or "broch" which means swamp, which is appaerently also true for the region, or something else entirely.

So very awesome, interesting and informatively inspiring bonus episode, I so really liked and enjoyed it. Great job and well done, keep up the great work. I got a lot of much needed inspiration for the inciting incident of the opening scene for book 1 of the internet fiction series Mysteriarch Mythos I’m writing. My internet fiction series is lovecraftian horror and digital horror with psychological and parapsychological elements. I’m going to be creating entities for my story that are based on the dark watchers, they’ll be a lot more lovecraftian Eldritch horrors instead, I’m also creating entities for my story that will be inspired by the silent realm guardians in legend of Zelda skyward sword. Also for my story there’s going to be a sort of mirror dimension/silence dimension that is a mirrored version of the world that my story takes place in which is the non physical reality of the virtual internet/dreamscape universe of phantasmagoria.

Reminds me of the book The Night Land (1912), where there are silent eternal watchers observing the human race who alert other beings of our activity. Also my hometown's local rock station has a host who sounds exactly like John.

I'd guess that the Brocken Spectre does account for some sightings, but not for anyone who has spent any time outdoors. I've seen that effect myself and it's immediately obvious that it's your own shadow, because it moves with you, and, well, it's just obvious. I think that it does really highlight the laziness that plagues a lot of debunkers - they will find something that vaguely seems similar to what is claimed, and then declare the case closed. Reminds me of a few years back when some videos of cities in the clouds were popping up, mainly on Chinese social media, and despite the videos being clearly CGI, websites the world over confidently stated that they were examples of "fata morgana" optical illusions. Even though they looked nothing whatsoever like a fata morgana which is blurry and close to the horizon.

Id say iys him trying to get her to drive BACK TO DANGER (and potential supernatural danger/potential paranormal enemies)....what a moron...plus if she was tired and driving then thats extremely dangerous..strange how you make out its her thats the "lame" friend as opposed to whoever the main story protagonist was....the one driving was sensible

Just like any rumor the more people talk about something the more the next person and next person and next person “hears” about it the more every… single… person adds their own version to make their story sound juuuuuust a little better then after the 20th person tells what they “heard” the other person said it’s now the opposite of what the first person said they saw.

Idk how you guys feel about the Bible, but the watchers are referenced 4 times there. Jeremiah 4:16, Daniel 4:3, Daniel 4:17, and Daniel 4:23. It doesn't sound like they're anything "holy" bc it mentions "a watcher and an holy one came down from heaven." It kind of makes it seem like they watch the human realm and cry out to God, or give messages to Him for some reason.
