Morally ambiguous characters are those that are not simply heroes or villains. They fall somewhere in between, and as such, add a layer of depth and complexity to your story. The truth is that most humans in real life are not pure angels or simply bad people, but rather hold elements of both. And this defines Willow to the damn tee. That’s why I say she’s the most human and realist character in the Buffyverse. There’s no other character that has this deep level of moral ambiguity. You could say Spike or Faith contend with Willow because they also hold elements of both too. But given how pure and innocent and sweet and seemingly harmless this character starts off … She definitely takes the winning position on this. Yes, I am hyper-fixated on Willow. Who wouldn’t be with an arc like hers? I do love all of the other characters too. I just don’t feel the need to talk about them as much - or anywhere near if I’m honest. You got to understand that I have never really seen a main female character be a villain and a hero and have it be completely okay that she’s both. That representation on TV is NOWHERE. Not that I’ve seen anyway. It’s very rare and therefore very exciting.

This is brilliantly worded, and I haven't much to add. I plan to do a lot more Willow centric videos in the future, because she's just such an endlessly fascinating character to explore even in this limited way. And I listened to the song real me by Natalie Grant, and I think it's great, it could work really well with a video for her and I have a few ideas about how it could turn out. So after I finish the video I'm making right now I might have a go at Willow with that song.

@@faithvictoria9014 Yay! I’m very excited for that. It’s funny that I never even thought about that song for her character study because I’ve known and loved it for years and just coming into the Buffy fandom last year and falling completely in love with Willow, it just didn’t click for me until I heard the song randomly on my phone one day and I realized how perfectly it describes Willow and her entire arc.

About ‘Paint It Black’, originally by The Rolling Stones. “The song describes the extreme grief suffered by one stunned by the sudden and unexpected loss of a wife, lover or partner - a character "so entrenched in his depression and rage that he has lost all hope - a blanket worldview of desperation and desolation, with no hint of hope.” “This is written from the viewpoint of a person who is depressed; he wants everything to turn black to match his mood. There was no specific inspiration for the lyrics. When asked at the time why he wrote a song about death, Mick Jagger replied: "I don't know. It's been done before. It's not an original thought by any means. It all depends on how you do it." “The song seems to be about a lover who died: I see a line of cars and they're all painted black - The hearse and limos.” "With flowers and my love both never to come back - The flowers from the funeral and her in the hearse. He talks about his heart being black because of his loss.” "I could not foresee this thing happening to you - It was an unexpected and sudden death.” "If I look hard enough into the setting sun, my love will laugh with me before the morning comes - This refers to her in Heaven.” Info from various sources: Songfacts and Wikipedia.

Oh, this has got to be my favourite from you yet and that’s saying something because I adore your ‘BtVS’ videos. You have captured the moral ambiguity of this character so well with this one. Willow is someone who becomes corrupted by forces that are far beyond her capacity to withstand. And I’m not saying she’s weak by that statement. I’m saying that she’s so pure and innocent that she’s susceptible to darkness. It would be absolutely impossible for her not to be corrupted by the power of Dark Magick because of this. Especially considering she feels so useless and valueless in herself without magic. Because of that desperation to be more than what she already is - she easily succumbs to the irresistible lure of ultimate magical power and I love how this video so brilliantly captures that fact that Willow was always the one who was most in danger of becoming corrupted by the supernatural life of the Slayer and her Scoobies. Well done!

Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment on my videos. Really it means a lot and I appreciate every comment :) And I totally agree, one of my favourite lines in Restless is Anya taunting Willow by saying it's exactly like a Greek tragedy, as Willow is in many ways a perfect example of a Greek hero, whose purity and goodness could be so easily corrupted and turned evil.

@@faithvictoria9014 precisely! Yes, I love that line too. And I love that there’s finally someone who understands me when I talk about how Willow’s addiction to magic is not about the magic and therefore not overwrought or unnecessary. It’s about her insecurities and anxieties. And therefore her addiction was to power and to control. Magic was just the external source for accumulating and using it. I explain all this in depth in my episode recap for ‘Restless’ and several of my other episode recaps for the show revolving around Willow and her immense character development. There’s only one other character in TV history I can compare her arc too in terms of how well it is written. Gabrielle from ‘Xena: Warrior Princess’. Very different arcs and very different characters. But incredible writing. My two favourite characters of all time.
