I was in Germany during the 80's in the Army. There was more weird shit going on between the east and west when it came to radio traffic a person could hardly keep up with it or even notice it all for that matter. The closer you got to the east/west border the worse it became. I heard everything from numbers to crazy music and voices, bag pipes, Latin.... it was endless.
@SaxonYear4108 жыл бұрын
+TheChuck624 Interesting, sort of reminds me what a dear friend of mine (now deceased) once told me about his own experience during the Cold War. His task amounted to mapping out coordinates for potential itineraries in case of thermonuclear warfare between the two blocs (he served in a subsection of the RAF during the fifties). Apparently he initially struggled a lot to keep up with his unit in West Germany as they were constantly hunted down by foreign intelligence, always on the move from town to town. The Cold War sure had its fair load of shady stuff happening. I'm curious, was there any transmission that stood out in particular, or was it just utter audio chaos? Was there any place in particular on the border where you could perfectly hear that kind of radio traffic?

Growing up, my grandparents had a large console radio from the 1930's (my brother has it now, don't know if it still works), with shortwave bands on it. We'd hook up an additional antenna outside, and on clear nights, it would pick up some really weird transmissions. We figured they were from Europe, too bad we never recorded anything. I'm wondering if we didn't hear one of these. This was the late 70's/early 80's.

I am always reminded of the old joke of the verbal message sent from the front in WW1 which started as “send reinforcements we’re going to advance” and after a relay of message runners had got it to headquarters it was modified to “send three and four pence, we’re going to a dance”! Messages get garbled easily. 😂
@Nerobyrne8 жыл бұрын
I think these are more mysterious, and less creepy^^ Well, there isn't that much strange about these things really, as radio is a very good way of transmitting asymmetrically encrypted messages to an unspecified number of individuals constantly on the move without needing any intermediaries. Actually, I believe that with the rise of better interception on the web with super AIs like Watson, we will see a lot more of this kind of encoding going on.

The "backward music" one reminds me quite a bit of the very common Stanag 4285 military and intelligence communications on HF. Similar phasing effect, maybe it was an early use of that type of transmission technology. I love this stuff, heard my first numbers station as a kid back in the late 70's. Ocho, ocho, cuatro, uno, tres, siete. My older brother told me it was Russian spies in Cuba and man I was totally hooked on HF after that. Never really stopped... Now I have a full wave mag loop on my ceiling for 20 meters and 10 meters and three small resonant mag loops for 80, 40, and 11 meters... and a discone in the attic because bro, everyone needs a discone whether they know it or not. I have two of the good RTL-SDR sticks and a Ham It Up, but they're just gathering dust now because the real bad boys are my SDRPlay RSP 1 and 2 units. Not cheap, but oh so nice. Pair one of those with a strong computer running SDR Console and some digital decoder software and you'll be having fantasies of being an NSA spook just about instantly. ;-)

I was really into shortwave a few years back. I heard two number stations-sadly tho I was not able to identify which ones they were. I also picked up marine radar which sounds scary as fuck, and on several occasions I heard a weather broadcast for the Israeli military and I was also able to pick up the "clock" (if you are curious ill explain) on many occasions. besides those I heard countless other creep/strange things that I can explains-it was a lot of fun.

In the '80s as a young world traveller i'd moved into London and had bought a professional SW radio receiver so i could listen to shortwave stations back home in Australia. I soon discovered an annoying strong morse-code transmission that wiped out what i was trying to hear. It was unusual such a signal was in this part of the radio-band where countries broadcast their SW programs . In a hobby mag i found a little decoder unit. It displayed the morse "diddly dah: as english words on it's little LCD readout. Oneday i'd a guest visiting and i was showing him the setup when on came the usual annoying strong morse. The display readout showed what was a table of football club scores... my guest said bullshit they're all wrong (he followed the footy) and then the message changed to read a London phone number before it left the airwaves..... which i wrote down! We phoned it for a joke and it answered something like: "Witaj, dotarłeś do polskiej ambasady"... (Hello, you have reached the Polish Embassy)... I've never hung a phone up faster!
@freestonew2 жыл бұрын
football scores, eh? probably made up scores where the numbers were a secret code for something!

that's bs why would they use morse code for a number station when anyone can crack it?

the backwards music station wasn’t actually a numbers station, but just an audio loop feedback that got accidentally transmitted

I used to dial through the SW bands at night in the 1960's and my friends and I heard some very odd things. Lot's of number stations where broadcasting, sequences of musical notes and there where frequencies with weird roaring sounds and tones, English broadcasts from Radio Triana (Albania) and Radio Havana. Fun stuff.

I used to listen to these as a teenager and recognise them all apart from '4 (backwards music station). The Buzzer is the only one I think is still going to this day (I know because I tuned into it this morning on my amateur radio kit to show a visitor to my radio shack here in the UK of what a "cold war relic" radio signal sounds like). These days, the Buzzer in on 4.625 Mhz using Upper Side Band modulation (unusual for that low a frequency). but can be clearly heard using more basic AM short wave radio equipment too. A lot of analysis of this signal has been made over the years and what I've read is that, to this day this is a physical buzzer inside a room with a microphone in front of it rather than a purely electronically derived sound... people have said they can on occasion hear voices talking in the background... Some have also suggested that The Buzzer is a continuous high powered radio signal transmitted to the Soviet / now Russian submarine fleet that nuclear war hasn't happened - it's sudden disappearance would indicate that a new state of alertness should take place.... What's for sure though - the Buzzer can be heard almost anywhere on Earth at some point in the day, when the atmospheric propagation is in alignment!
