I made a board for myself out of black foam board (foamcore). If you want to spend a couple hours making it you can save yourself $100+. You just cut out an iPad shaped hole in a sheet of 1/4 inch thick foamcore. You can make the foamcore as big as you want it to be to fit on your lap or whatever. Cut out some extra space around the areas where the iPad side buttons are located. Use double-sided tape to stick it to another sheet of foamcore (with no hole for the iPad). If you want to be able to plug the iPad in while you use it, you could cut a slot for the charging cable. Then you can just drop your iPad into the custom fit hole you made and get to work. It took me about 2 hours total to make and only cost the amount of 2 16x20 sheets of foamcore. (I already had double-stick tape and an x-acto knife). Oh, you also need to notch out a little area for the back camera (which is kind of annoying and I wish there was no back camera on the iPad Pro, because I never use it).

Brother, I had all those troubles as well, I have been a traditional illustrator since 1986, so between the mouse, and reg illustration, my elbow was shot !!! The solution thst work is not glamorous. It took forever, but my elbows are fine. Started with 3 pound dumbbells and doing wrist curls every day for months and months until the pain went away. Then I started doing arm curls for months and months and months, super low weight is the key now everything is great. I lift heavier weights. My body looks better. My health has improved and most of all that pain in the elbow and wrist is gone. It’s a long road probably will take you a year of every day work, but it works and you’ll be fixed. Hope this helps. 🙏🙌

A useful addition for an iPad! I noticed its difficult on your hands and arms after a while just using the ipad alone , plus you use the valuable screen space to rest your hand . I reckon you could make the same thing out of a sheet of ply / hardwood and just trace around your ipad and then jigsaw it out, create a secondary backing section underneath this gap and you would have the same thing...but for a fraction of the cost

They also have a bag for the sketchboard pro, but that adds to the total cost. I ended up getting it, but haven’t used it… yet. Lol. Great video as usual! I already have a Sketchboard but I really like the look of the Darkboard. The smaller size would fit much better on my desk, but it's the lack of upgradability that puts me off making the switch. I'd love to see a version 2 in future that steals a few features from the sketchboard but I'm not sure how likely that is.
@chris-piascik Жыл бұрын
That’s understandable. I think in order for Darkboard to have that functionality it would need to be redesigned. That, the overall size of the iPad Pro has stayed the same for many years now and likely will continue to, aside from the addition of a larger 16” option that is rumored to be coming in the fall.

@blackrianfire Жыл бұрын
Both of these items are only good if you’re going to draw while sitting on the couch. Otherwise you should pair a iPad with a portable drafting table one that can sit on top of your computer table or work table. There are add benefits to using a portable drafting table: one pain in hour hands and elbow are reduced if not gone, two its portable and if you need disk space for something else it can be folded and place under the disk, three it cost less you can get one under $100 and as low as $35 depending on size. I personally have two, one I bought new with coupons for $30 and it was $75, the sound one I found at a thrift store for $10. If you’re not drawing on a couch or arm chair you shouldn’t buy the darkboard of sketchboard pro.
@chris-piascik Жыл бұрын

I’m curious to hear your thoughts. Which one feels more comfortable in terms of drawing on the couch. I imagine the dark board would win with the lighter weight and thicker form. But also with the newer iPad, I know the thinness doesn’t allow the iPad to sit flush, so would that be bothersome? I’m currently between ordering the dark board or sketch board pro v2 for my new 13in. Thanks!
@chris-piascik5 ай бұрын
I use both daily because I have them. I use the DarkBoard on the couch not because of the weight but because the thicker form is more comfortable resting on my lap. Thanks to you, I finally decided to try using Fresco on my iPad for some freelance illustration as opposed to trying to use photoshop or illustrator as what I was doing seemed like it would be easier with an Apple Pencil instead of a mouse. Fresco works well, and while a little frustrating at first because I am not that familiar with it, I found I addpatied fairly quickly. One thing I idid notice was how hot my iPad gets when drawing in fresco, and I would occasionally see my screen dim intermittently, I assume because of the heat. I notice that the Astropad Darkboard does not have the open back that the sketch board pro has and wonder if that open back aids in cooling the iPad. Just curious if you experience your iPad dimming slightly when using fresco. With that said, I think I am leaning toward the Sketchboard since it looks like it might keep the iPad cooler. The darkboard foam construction looks like it might keep the heat in. Not sure if you have any thoughts about that.
@chris-piascik Жыл бұрын
Hmm, does that only happen when you're plugged in? That's the only time my ipad gets hot, but never enough to dim the screen, and I use mine for hours at a time. If you are having issues with heat I'd definitely recommend the sketchboard pro. The Darkboard does have a tendency to insulate.

The sketchboard feels more comfortable and larger because it has tapered edges that sort of blend seamlessly with the table. The darkboard is thicker and doesnt have tapered edges. This creates that awkward angle with a weird space between the board, the table and your arms, that make it all feel smaller and less comfortable.

I also have the elevation lab draft table and for me, the extra surface area provided by Darkboard and the Sketchboard Pro make the biggest difference. I would recommend everyone to learn wood working and cut one out and making it custom
@chris-piascik10 ай бұрын
Well, once in production I imagine they are fairly cheap to produce-but not as cheap as if there were huge numbers. This is a niche product so the cost per item would go for smaller runs. That said, the mold that would needed to make the product would be very pricey-and that doesn't take into account the design and development. Learning the woodworking skills to make something like this would certainly take more than an hour-and my hourly rate is higher than the cost of the product. But even if I did build one out of wood I'd have a much heavier, less comfortable iPad drawing board.
@UnseenDraws10 ай бұрын
@@chris-piascik I forgot you draw on your lap. most people draw on their desk with these drawing boards so in terms of weight and being comfortable it doesn’t really matter. And learning the woodworking skills are not only useful for a drawing board but for just about anything. in terms of hourly it would pay for itself. no matter what you can’t justify paying $120 for foam It’s ridiculous. Design….. it’s literally a cut out in a piece of foam. Molds are made pretty cheap…… honestly they are ripping people off and it’s hilarious. Max it should cost is around 50 bucks and that’s pushing it.

To each their own....its just funny how we as artists often circle back and forth and around and around to find that perfect fit regarding the tools and comfort level. I myself have been there; done that too. Just remember, when it comes to comfort that aides in your actual physical health,....software and hardware preferences should take a back seat. Sounds like you are certainly trying everything and anything to alleviate the pain/disconfort and prevent near future negative health ramifications and damage. That being said, glad you have found a temporary solution with that accessory! That might be the ticket!
