I have both the darkboard and Sketchboard Pro 1. I was going to wait for them to release the version for the M4 ipad, but now I'm thinking of getting the one that's built for the M1/M2, since it fits more snugly. Thanks, Chris!

Thanks, Chris! I’ve been waiting and waiting for them to come out with the one for the 13 inch, but if it fits in the smaller one, a little more snuggly, I’m fine with that!

So grateful for this video. I was worried I would need to buy a new darkboard for the 13 but looking at the dimensions between my ipad pro 12.9 2020 and the M4 Pro 13" its so minimal. Yay! Because the m4 is a pretty hefty investment for me. Thank you so much!

I had contact with the Sketchboard Pro guys. They usually 2-3months to make the new versions for 13“ and 11“ M4s including design and manufacturing. So I expect that that start to ship from the mid of August.

Thank you for this, I was going to wait for them to update the insert for the new version, but it almost seems that getting the previous version would be a better choice.

This is so useful, thank you for sharing!! I just got the ipad and you convinced me about these accessories, especially since the main reason I never even got one was ergonomic concerns. I always use display tablets on monitor arms to make that situation better and this feels like the best 'solve' for ipad that ive seen. I just have one question, when you're fitting the new one into these, do you feel like theres any chance of damage over time, like over 200 insertions day after day, I ask because like you im a professional and would be using it often, so I wonder about solutions that are fine once in a while VS fine every single day Is yours a bit worn on the spots where you push it in or shows any signs of bending? since it is so thin I worry. But I feel like its probbaaablyyy fine?? haha Thanks!! amazing videos

Thanks for this video. What's your long-term opinion/preference on the white bezel vs the black? Does anything jump out and nag at you (like glare, premature yellowing, constantly being "aware" of it in your vision, etc), or has it been smooth sailing?
@chris-piascik10 күн бұрын
No issues, it’s matte so no glare. No yellowing, it’s great!

Good luck trying to use a thunderbolt 3 or higher cable with the Sketchboard 2, i had to dremel the cable channel wider to deal with the tension in the cable. All that torque for sure is not good in the long run. If anyone has a low profile thunderbolt3+ cable im all ears.
@chris-piascik2 күн бұрын
I don’t have any issues just using the Apple cable that came with the iPad. There no tension at all.
@Padygy2 күн бұрын
Yea the cable that came with the iPad works fine, but if you want to run an external system with the iPad as the computer like stage manager the thicker cables are kinda a pain. I personally am running my iPad into a thunderbolt dock into a TV with Dolby vision and a 9.1 entertainment system, a thunderbolt cable is a must.

Hi! Did the ipad ended up bending or having some problem with the more snug fit?. Thanks!
@chris-piascik2 ай бұрын
Nope! I use them every day. It's definitely not the level of tight that would bend the iPad. It's just snug.

I joined their mailing list for an updated version of the sketchboard pro for the M4 ipad but it still hasn't been released yet. I figure I may as well just wait for that one. I quite like the nano texture ipad after using it roughly for a month. I did cut out some foam board but I had an old 2017 ipad which is actually quite a bit larger than these new fangled devices. I actually panicked a bit when i got the new ipad because i thought I accidentally bought the 11 inch one lol.

Hi Chris!, in relation to the sketchboard, do you think that adding a 3D printed flat supplement to the base can compensate for the difference in height of the iPad? I am interested in the snug fit of the 12.9 model
@chris-piascikАй бұрын
It’s such a tiny amount that I don’t think 3D printing would be necessary. I honestly don’t notice it at all. That said, if you did you could probably just put a thin sheet of plastic or rubber there… but it’s a fraction of an inch. I don’t even feel it when I rest my hand there.

Chris,..I have a question directly aimed at you and I would love for you to give me your honest answer. (Not that I think you would lie necessarily,..lol) My big reasoning for not ever purchasing an iPad Pro is the fact that I have Kong sized hands and the mere fact of trying to draw on a miniscule, whimpy 13" screen is nothing but an exercise in futility and anger. Add to that space occupied for app tools and now you are basically working in a postage stamp framework zooming in and out just to see what your doing. Add to it my dislike for most things Apple and its a no go. (If they ever had a 16" iPad Pro,..I would at least give it a second look however) My question (finally getting to it) to you is: Do you think you could "comfortably" create a full sized (standard sized) comic book replete with a story arc, panels and word balloons with a full cast of characters ENTIRELY on an iPad? OR...do you feel that you would likely want to do some of the work on a larger screen device or display tablet throughout that process? Obviously we already know that you certainly could do it based on your talent level,..but I'm asking what would you feel most comfortable working on (device wise) for a comic book or perhaps a very large format project like a poster series or even a billboard? (Geesh,..wonder if Billboards even exist anymore,..lol...man I'm old). I was just curious. To me,...16-17" is the sweet spot for screen real estate....but I love to learn about what others think.
@chris-piascik6 ай бұрын
OK here are my absolutely honest answers… well that sounds sarcastic now, but I really mean it, lol. First, I will say that I have been an Apple person since the 90’s and using Windows or Android feels like mild torture to me-so take that how you will. I may not be kong sized, but I am a fairly large person at 6’2” with fairly large hands. Prior to drawing exclusively on an ipad I used a 27” Wacom Cintiq. I ended up selling that after I realized I had gone weeks without touching it because I so much prefered to draw on the ipad. It’s been many years at this point and I’ve worked on countless large scale projects, 10+ billboards, a giant wall graphic, large display graphics, vehicle graphics, etc. I don’t find the size prohibitive because the gestures are so intuitive that zooming and moving the artboard around is so natural and seamless that it feels much bigger than it is. A lot of this comes down to the apps I work in (fresco/procreate) being optimized and built for the ipad so the UI isn’t very obstructive like desktop apps can be. This was very apparent to me when testing out a 16” Huion display tablet. Using that with my desktop it felt smaller than my ipad. I was hoping for a 16” iPad as well, but I’m still satisfied with the 13”. I do find that the Sketchboard Pro (or Darkboard) made the ipad feel even bigger since my hands were no longer resting on the screen all the time. Hope this helps!

@@chris-piascik Thanks Chris. I find your story really interesting. I have been tempted a few times in my life to jump on the iPad bandwagon but I’m always turned off by the small size AND THAT APPLE ecosystem! I was forced to switch to an iPhone a month ago at my work and I absolutely hate it. That alone tells me that the iPad Pro will be a similar user experience. I would love to see you take us through your process (as it relates to the operational side) from start to finish ( saving the files and exporting ). I know this is not what your channel normally focuses on but it would be kind of neat and educational. Regardless, thanks for doing what you do Chris. I like how you are approachable and humble and not afraid to share your missteps along with your successes. Keep it going! You are a “must watch” in my house!

@@ToddDolceFor what it's worth, I hate Apple and wouldn't touch an iPhone in a million years. I'm Windows and Android through-and-through. I like that they're so open rather than being a closed ecosystem. BUT...like Chris, I moved from Cintiq to iPad Pro, and I wouldn't go back. I had the 27QHD Cintiq hooked up to my desktop pc with Photoshop and Clip Studio for years. It was great. I had few complaints. But the 13 inch iPad Pro with Procreate just feels different and this is my third iPad Pro now. It's absolutely superior. At first then 13" screen feels small, but you soon get used to the gestures that end up feeling completely natural and intuitive. I have the Sketchboard Pro (original version) and it makes the experience even more enjoyable. You're still working on the same sized screen, but having all that extra room to rest on, it feels like the screen's suddenly doubled. And yes, t's great for comics. I hate to admit it, but for the pen display market, Apple just has it wrapped up. There's simply no competition. The Cintiq feels clunky and outdated in comparison. As for the closed ecosystem, I'm absolutely with you, but you'd be surprised by how little you need to actually purchase to get everything you need. In fact, the only app you really need to buy is Procreate, and it's the most ridiculously great value art program you'll ever see. I still wouldn't touch an iPhone. I'm not interested in getting sucked into all my phone or computer needs being restricted by their ecosystem. But for digital art, there's simply no matching the iPad Pro.
