Many Indians served at the siege of Tobruk with The Aussies & British. Many were silent killers in no man's land at night.
@boydah696 сағат бұрын
@@peterkerr4019 yes, my dad had a relative that fought in the desert campaign, he said when out in a listening post or after an advance when positions were fluid, at night, lone Aussie soldiers reported encounters with silent Indian raiders. The digger standing guard would suddenly feel a hand on his shoulder, and they would freeze because there would be a dagger inches from their throat, ready to slit it if the Indian didn`t feel the rising sun badge. Then, the digger would hear a chuckle , feel a pat on the back and "Sorry, friend ". That was the story I recall. Similar tactics to the Gurkhas.

Mohinder Singh Pujji was a hero, no doubt about it and he was recognised as such by the British public at large, by his promotions and his decorations. that's it. Thats his recognition, that's all the recognition a hero can expect. More than a quarter of a million aircrew flew in the RAF, all heros to me. None braver than the humble rear gunner flying in a Stirling. At least two hundred thousand Indian volunteered to fight for the British Empire, the largest volunteer army anywhere, ever. Heros all. The 1969 film "The Battle of Britain" made clear the Battle of Britain was a multi-national effort and anyone with the slightest interest in WW2 knows this and the contribution made by those from outside the British Isles. If Mohinder Singh Pujji faced lack of recognition it was in India where members of the Japanese collaborationist "Indian National Army" is held in higher regard than their true defenders.

That man and his peers and yet others couldn't be simply duly mentioned as coming from wherever they came from, somebody had to add the multi-this taint and inter-that BS. Something akin to the "been there from the start" sack of BBC falsehood just had to be mentioned here. Good grief. That man and the others being left in the dark, and none being invited to the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain was a shame, truly. Plain and simple. But using them to even remotely ramble about the "multicultural history" of the RAF, which was always mostly made of, well, British citizen and nationals, is simply rewriting History. And pesenting a false narrative, and not just adding due mention of unfairly forgotten men.
