"Hah! The buffoon is flummoxed!" (I've heard that phrase A LOT during just one match) The OST for this DLC is quite interesting in the mood. Perhaps, that is me trying to dig too deep, but I keep thinking about it. The main game is all about the impending doom. It's a journey full of dread, horrors, stakes. If you don't succeed... the world is as good as over. But Butcher's Circus is different. From a certain position, there are no stakes. There is no impending doom. There is just a show, a bravado. So, for once, a semblance of happiness is allowed. And that tonal mix of still the same Darkest Dungeon dread, mixed in with some happiness and the uplifted mood is something truly magnificent! Nothing short, but the best from Stuart, as always!

This is exactly what I was thinking! The music is all grand and extravogant and has "happy" sounds in it, but there's still a strong overarching sense of dread through the wind instruments, strings and drums. Another absolute masterclass in thematic video game music.

The undulating waves of the thronging crowd leer down at the combatants in the blood-soaked pit beneath them, naught but their twisted expressions of glee visible from below. Lauding and loathing the men and women who combat one another in equal measure, their cheers ring through the whole of the Hamlet, echoing late into the dark of the night. Back and forth the two quartets go, striking and retreating in equal measure. The Man-at-Arms ripostes a wayward strike from the Jester, the Occultist conjures elongated tendrils to tear into the flesh of the Vestal and Highwayman. The bandit advances, thrusting his knife against the Abomination as the Houndmaster's faithful dog harries the defenders. The Leper assails the venerable soldier, chopping against his shield - A DEVASTATING BLOW! - only to meet with a dogged, unyielding resistance. And for what? Has the Ancestor reaped yet another terrible harvest? Invited a separate virulent plague upon the world? Awakened a separate horrid entity of malicious intent? No. The Butcher's Circus, as vicious as the blood-soaked banners and metal visages may be, does not boast a grander purpose nor an insidious shadow behind itself. Riddled in gore and rife with carnage, the realm of the mad carnival is just that: a festival. A place of enjoyment, as indulgent and sadistic it may be. Here, though the horrors of the Estate yet loom over the horizon, for a brief time, there is simple competition among companions and adventurers, a place to test one's mettle, settle old scores, and feel the rush of life without fear of death by a malformed mutant, unholy abomination, or cackling madman. Here, they are but among themselves, and through the dread of the present and the mounting wounds upon their bodies, they cannot help but smile in glee. The Circus has come to the Hamlet, and none among the heroes would have it any other way.

Unrelated to my dumbass joke, below: Can I just point out that even the points that are "repetitive" are almost like they're lulling you into a false sense of security - of knowing where the song is going to go - before coming back around and hitting you with some new hotness? If that isn't Darkest Dungeon to a T, then I don't know what is. And as a friend of mine has repeatedly stated, "This music was designed for what is essentially a _mini-game._ In any other game, this music would be considered the kind of song worthy of a final boss battle." In fact, that's fitting in it's own way - what is a more dangerous opponent to face, than another human being who has put in as many sleepless hours as you in mastering this game and its mechanics? Who else can strategize around your own party composition and react appropriately?

@@StuartChatwood that's understandable, but honestly, the fact that the DLC music had a different feel to it helped a lot. talking especially about this and Color Of Madness. Now I'm really curious to see how it'll be like when Darkest Dungeon 2 comes out! Have more faith in your skills because every single track the game had to offer was great!

I started it and was like, “hmm, not as good as the other-“ then the intro ended and the main piece started playing and I was totally smacked in the face “-the other pieces have to catch up to this track now, holy crap”

What a great comment. I almost felt like I should tell people to give it a few listens first. For DD2 some of the piece might be more challenging so please give me a bit of patience. I find that the songs that take a few listens turn out to be my favourites. You crystallized my fears when I upload a new piece. "What if they hate it?" I'm always thinking that in my head. But after doing this for a number of years you have to trust yourself. If you like it yourself then trust that it will find an audience.

Stuart Chatwood, this music is amazing, it’s just hard to top Color Of madness okay? That stuff was/is/will be my favorite music in any video game

@@StuartChatwood personally speaking as soon as I heard the lobby music i thought that everyone was in for a good time. In terms of the combat music I enjoyed the hell out of it right out the gate. The music constantly spiraling down like the madness of the circus and the strings piano and accordion (I think I'm not great with instruments) all harmonising together was bliss for my ears. Absolutely brilliant work and one of the reasons i decided to buy the ancestral bundle over the weekend sale. I'm sure that the music in DD2 will be just as appreciated as that of the first.

This is practically the definition of old 1890’s esc circus music, but brutal and maniacal added to it. Not like circus music didn’t have those themes but still.

almost a year passed and this still hit me like first time. You should consider changing your name into CHADwood for real cause this is just magnificent.

Listening to this while fighting in the game makes you feel the lore behind the dlc; people who don't know anything about each other kill each other in the arena in order to make some corrupt cowards entartainted which means you did an amazing job again but still dark mitochondria is my favorite it gives me the feeling of fighting in a hard situation, killing to survive without end

I have a problem... First off, your work is amazing and Darkest Dungeon has no tracks I dislike. And again you continue to prove that you are an artist. This and the lobby are just perfection. But that's the problem. I've been listening to this basically non-stop since it was released. And now I have to choose between The Final Combat, this, and The Blasted Heath as my favorite on the soundtrack. They are all just too good!

"Hey, Stuart, we're going to make some free bonus DLC for our game, and we need additional soundtracks for it. No need to go too hard." Stuart:

Once again, you have outdone yourself Stuart. The adrenaline rush you get during making decisions while this masterpiece plays in the background is undescribable. The fact that this is the last DLC for the first DD saddens me extremely, however it made me realize that so far there was not a single track in this game that I would not like. Seriously, the amount of time i spent listening to the OST during other things is overwhelming, I even remember that when there was this Spotify year summarise, you were the creator I have listened to the most. My words cannot express enough gratitude you deserve, but still, all I can do now, is to say *Thank you*

This track captures the magic and madness of the circus so well. It transports you there and you feel like you're one among the crowd. I come back here whenever I want to revisit that strange place. EDIT: Almost forgot. All Hail, Stuart Chatwood. One of the best composers of today.

I have listened to this track for countless hours. You may think that is a tesitment to how much I love it, but really it's just I play a lot of Butcher's Circus. No, the real tesiment to how much I love it is the fact that I'm here listening to it again.
