To be honest speeches of this quality dont just occur no matter the timeline. You need someone to put as much power and emotion into as he did but he did have a huge amount of pressure on him that could of helped with the emotion side of the speech. Churchill's speeches in particular are incredibly powerful. And could only be as powerful if they came from him. His tone matches the vocabulary so well. And the choice of words is just amazing.

This is very fitting. Bismarck started the German-French war which led to Germanys unity with literal fake news. When he drops the pen at the end. Such a subtle nod to the weight of the office that he had just assumed. He spoke to reassure the British people of something that, at the point, he probably wasn’t even sure could be done. THAT is what bold leadership looks like. Chamberlain should had been ousted as soon as Poland was invaded.

When he was talking about Nazism being the “most soul destroying tyranny” and that we would pay any price in not just money but in lives too to defeat it, he was sending a message to the appeasers in his cabinet I believe as well as to the nation at large. I’m not sure if people would be prepared to go along with that today.
@gamezdude5544

Sadly not. Nazism (Or any ism) tends to be very well camouflaged as the opposite these days. While others who do not support the idea of being divisive, being part of a tribe/identity and values freedom of expression, and the freedom of political option (regardless of the view) in addition to many other God-given rights, greater than any other value, are tarred with a variation of an ism.

I speak to you, for the first time as Prime Minister. In a solemn hour, for the life of our country, of our empire, of our allies, and above all, of the cause of freedom A tremendous battle is raging in France, and Flanders. The Germans, by a remarkable combination of air bombing and heavily armoured tanks, have broken through the French defences, north of the Maginot line, and strong columns of their armoured vehicles now ravaging the open country, which for the first day or two, was without defenders. However, I have invincible confidence in the French army and its leaders. Only a very small part of that splendid army has yet been heavily engaged, and only a very small part of France has yet been invaded. Side by side, the British and French peoples have advanced to rescue not only Europe, but mankind, from the foulest and most soul destroying tyranny which has ever darkened and stained the pages of history. But now, one bond unites us all. To wage war, until victory is won, and never to surrender ourselves to servitude and shame. Whatever the cost and the agony may be, conquer, we must, as conquer, we shall.

Two charismatic orators fighting. Hitler, with all his might, the uniforms, the lights, the cheering masses, trimphant and close to victory and on the other side, Churchill. Shocked, with a trembling voice, but unbreakable amd masterly invoking all the good traditions of western civilization. In the darkest hour Churchill raised his voice, but when Hitler started to lose he instantly stopped holding speeches. Character matters.

You can say a lot of things about Sir Winston, but you cannot say he was bad at delivering Country rallying speeches.

What was the guy's deal when he said "Advance"? I'm guessing he went off script from what he was supposed to be saying?

This was Halifax. He was, with Chamberlain, Leader of the Appeasment politic. This "Advance ?", shows, how shocked he is, about what Churchill said (continue the war and so on).

RadioactiveRat The situation was far from what Churchill was saying. The British and French military position was far from advantageous, and the Germans have already managed to gain so much so quickly out of nowhere. The word “advanced” gave the idea that this was a war that they were to fight and it that it was a war that was winnable.

@@RianOmega Oh I know all about how quickly Germany pushed through Belgium and France. Now I know more about how some wanted to pursue appeasement with Germany, and pressed hard for it. My understanding is that he phrased things differently and they werent happy about it.
