The reason that Israel has the right to modify US blackbox tech like the F-35 is simple--they agreed to make any modifications outside of any copyright and with full transparency. Basically, they agree that any alterations they make and systems they add will be fully explained and handed over to the US and Lockheed. This works out extremely well for all parties, as it means that Lockheed gets millions of dollars in free R&D/stress testing for their product, which they can apply to any future projects. Similarly, it benefits the US because any upgrades that Israel has (and has proven effective in combat) can be freely installed on US F-35s for our use, at no cost. Basically, we get combat-proven upgrades, for free, with the only caveat being that Israel is given access to the F-35 blackbox systems. Ironically, this created a bit of an issue a couple years ago, as a couple NATO countries wanted access to the upgraded systems developed by the IDF, but the US blocked it because they wanted to keep exclusivity, meaning that we are effectively treating the upgrades as we would a domestic variant blackbox tech. *blackbox tech just means restricted military technology that is typically only accessible by the creator nation. We may sell it to some other countries, but they can't access the internal systems and need to send them to the US for repairs because they aren't even allowed to know how they work. Some blackbox tech is even more restricted and is domestic-use only (eg. depleted uranium armor on US Abrams or F-22s).

No, the pork barrel and MIC loves it. Any changes made by the IDF need to be reported and shared, and so Lockheed Martin is basically getting free upgrades that they can put in the domestic F-35s, as well as future US projects. This means that their systems get free bug fixes, upgrades, and stress testing, and they don't need to lift a finger or pay a cent for it. For example, if the US locates an issue in the jet during their operations, they need to contact the manufacturer to request a fix, which often takes time and money; conversely, if the IDF locates the same issue, they can develop a fix themselves, test it, and implement it, and then Lockheed gets to apply that fix to US jets, avoiding the costs associated with dealing with the problem.

@tarmaque2 жыл бұрын
That's just radar absorbent paint, which is so fragile it basically has to be reapplied over every seam and line of rivets after most missions. Without it the radar cross section of the F-35 isn't much better than the F/A-18. It's a major flaw in the design. However they are working on much better coatings that will be much more durable, particularly at transsonic and supersonic speeds. I suspect they will be deployed about the same time a new stealth air superiority fighter is introduced that doesn't require this process.

The F15 and F16's first kills were Israeli airforce kills. The US isn't attacked head on often enough... Israel is surrounded by nations with populations very very sympathetic to the nazi final solution. Thusly it is more likely to Use its Air craft as Normally any Air to air employment would be a Massive incident.

It makes sense too because how else would Israel even continue to exist at this point without US military industrial innovations keeping that sliver of land functioning amid a sea of sharks for so long. There HAS to be excessively close cooperation to achieve that for all these years. Yes, Israel is a sovereign land but I wager that as far as their current existence goes, BOEING and other American aerospace tech companies like it are just as important as the synagogues that blanket the nation.
