Well done. It's good to see basics explained so well in the most basic of set-ups. For newcomers to film photography, large f0rmat in particular, this will be especially welcome, in respect to cost, space, and method.

Thanks for the very helpful video. Why not use an larger as a light source? Wouldn’t this allow for ‘edgeless’ burning as you can easily adjust the distance between the light and paper? And easier for timing and filters? Thanks, Alex

use a pulley and put the electrical wire through it so you can lower and raise the light! when you use the dodging tools you need to have a jagged edge to the edges or else will show the delineation ...just a tip!

Both very interesting suggestions. Although I am not sure about the light; I would be afraid that subtle movements could change the exposure (for example when changing the filters). I would need to try to make it work. For the jagged edge... I will definitely try! Even if I feather mydodging/burning, sometimes it shows up anyway. The jagged edge should add another level of disorder! Thanks very much for the contribution.

I have a 4x5 camera and I found an old 4x5 contact printing frame for cheap. I think I’ll start contact printing the large format 4x5

That is a lot of fun... 4x5 with the right subject is a jewel

Marco Fantin I guess with a smaller size you would need to have a simple composition and good contrast

I saw an exhibit of 4x5 images printed onto 8x10 paper. It required the viewer to come up close to the image and provided a different, more personal experience that viewing from afar. Also the idea of smaller, hand held images for viewing creates a more intimate feel as again it is just the image and a single viewer rather than a small group viewing a larger image in a gallery setting.
