Not just his voice, but everything about him. The difference between him here and DS2 is crazy. DS1 Dawson wakes up, takes painkillers that actually function, and *gets shit done*. Doesn't scoff at repelling out of his own house when the front door clearly functions fine, actually has the body strength to climb the rope back into his house easily (can't understate how difficult that is in reality at that age), is amicable with basically every person in town he meets, doesn't hesitate throwing himself into an alien world and wandering around, solves completely bullshit puzzles effortlessly, and is overall unflappable even in the final hours before his head explodes to some alien egg thing. And if you gave him a ring toss game, he'd probably win first try on his own merits. And then DS2 Dawson is a loser in every conceivable way, it's absolutely wild to call it a sequel.

Well, Dawson didn't work on the second game, so he must've done something to piss the developers off. This is why you don't make yourself a character kids, because then you're owned by companies. It might be okay in fanfics, though reasonable self-inserts are few and far between they can be done, but trying to make yourself a Mary Sue often ends up backfiring.

Sir Tanky I know he didn't work on the second, it was a rhetorical question. Frankly, in my opinion, DS1 Mike Dawson was not so much a Mary Sue as a generic character just to plug in the story. In theory, he was silent until the voice clips were added to *EVERYTHING*. The game really doesn't have TOO much in the way of plot, and is more along the lines of the typical horror genre of the time. DS2, on the other hand, looks like a peice of shit (and it is) but is actually a deep psychological horror (google analysis of it for further details, it's quite interesting). Thing is, it's presented so badly that it ends up being the goofy, boring shit that we see.

DiseasedMoss Notice I said TRYING to make yourself a Mary Sue. I almost said in theory but I didn't wanna seem like I was mocking you, but it seems like he could have been an actual Mary Sue. He looks and acts like the average joe but he ends up stopping the alien invasion just because. He ends up being the Chosen One just because, but that is kinda typical so I'll let it slide. I will agree with the rest of your points though. As for DS2 being a deep psychological horror? I can believe that, there were definitely signs of what it was meant to be under the cheesy presentation. The game is about a man who lives every day of his life knowing that there's a parallel dimension with counterparts to everyone he knows, and he also knows that the Ancients could come back for revenge. The analysis sounds interesting though, I'll have to keep that in mind for later. Thanks for the response pal!

I don't know if maybe I missed some details and hints playing DS2 or what, but DS1 gave hints as to what you needed and could intuit things, the main issue was just needing to basically note down schedules for not only each day but what changes over the days. (Also, that ONE item you need for the jail that you don't get a hint for at all unlike the other two, that was kind of a cheap shot.) DS2 suffers from what I like to call the "Phantasmagoria Problem". Good story, but the game itself is trying to make you dent your desk with your skull until you're trying to give everything to everyone because the developers didn't check if it makes sense for someone who doesn't know what they do.

It's a shame Mike Dawson might have been insulted at something like this, but at the same time, there is the fact that he perhaps, at least at the time of the original RP of this, couldn't converse about a trashing of it due to it possibly having a reflection on his career. Though honestly, I feel that someone who does a performance and looks back on it and says "woo yeah, that didn't age well, BUT I did learn a lot of key things from that experience" is a little more credible than someone with a spotless track record. Oh, and aside from the Xenomorph picture next to the grandfather clock, there is also a picture of Sil over the couch, which the Dark world librarian also resembles.

A lot of the art in the game is actually appropriated from existing Giger paintings, the librarian in particular is Li I, and Li II hangs on the wall near the xenomorph. Granted, it's nowhere near as bad as Darkseed II, where literally nothing is original, but they definitely made use of his back catalogue. As for Mike, it might not have been that he couldn't laugh at himself, but rather that he perceived the questions or sentiments as a direct attack. If someone's doing an lp of your game, and goes so far as to email the writer, it's natural to assume they have enough affection for it to bother spending the time on it at all. But if you shoot a guy an email that says "why did you make this stupid piece of shit?" instead of "what's up with the slow walking?" you're basically asking to be ignored. I have no idea what slowbeef said in that email, but I'm just saying from what I can tell he has an unusually mean-spirited and outright dismissive attitude about almost everything. I honestly can't imagine the guy being nice to... anyone, really. His "well he ignored me so FUCK THAT GUY" attitude in this video I think bears this theory out more so than Mike Dawson having an image of himself as infallible. And for what it's worth this game is nowhere near as awful as slowbeef and diabetus are making it out to be, but I'm going to assume that's already obvious.
