The guy in the Q7 was one of our friends, hence the barrage of abuse. We didn't help as we had other places to be quickly and he was gone later! The tyres used were Yokohama BlueEarth Winter V905.

We just had 30cm of snow last week in Latvia, didn't see anyone stuck anywhere and was driving my fwd saab with no problems. Crazy to see such chaos caused by little bit of snow.

Trouble is commercial vehicle tyres are not designed with grip in mind for those conditions. Drive axle tyres are normally very flat with big contact patches and not that much in the way of channels. This means if conditions take a turn they're stuffed. Also diff lock in an artic is horrific and steering is near impossible

Yeah, even with some mud/snow tires on or even chains wagons struggle in the snow. I went to Norway in the winter a few years back and the main roads where cleared almost every couple of hours by snow plough, Didn't see any stuck traffic. Norway is going to be passing a law soon that makes dedicated snow tires mandatory for wagons in the winter months. Don't know why the UK has never learned from past issues with snow.

The Toureg is a quality bit of kit. Although it amazes me some of them artics get stuck. The Downton one especially on the flat. One of the best ways to get them moving is override the autobox by putting it into manual, engage diff locks, send the air bags upto full height which puts the weight on the drive axle and aye presto you're moving.

Unbelievable that people get stuck in that little snow! Here in Germany everyone has winter tyres or at the very least all season. Big fines if you end up getting stuck and causing an obstruction without the proper tyres.
