I don’t see Aatrox as an Villain tbh. He got tricked by the Gods and he wants revenge for that. I kinda understand him tho imagine you’re a God of War and you get tricked by your own People to become an Slave for them. Just because he was betrayed doesnt mean hes not a villain, it just means its not as black and white, but hes definitely a villain hes killing so many innocent people and you cant excuse that with ''well but he had a fucked up past''. Its understandable but its still evil. Its like if someone steals your toy as a kid and now you start stealing everyone elses just because it was done to you, thats a very warped perception of justice.

he is a villain, but sometimes villains have a purpose, sometimes villains are created and that villain deserves his revenge. aatrox was a god (not actually, but he was a warrior as powerful as a god.), he and his fellow ascended were betrayed by actual gods and the mortals he had protected for many years from the void. the void did horrible things to these ascended warriors and many of them even died to the forces of the void. the strong lived but suffered mental trauma and slowly had their personalities altered by the corruptive void powers. many of aatroxs brethren died in the following war with the aspects (god like beings) and mortals, thats why he says he was betrayed. the trickster (the zoe, shes the aspect of twilight) and pantheon (the aspect of war which is now dead because aatrox killed him. atreus the mortal who has pantheons powers has taken over the aspect pantheons role as the aspect of war.) colluded with millions of mortals to fight against the ascended and kill them. zoe taught these mortals how to trap the ascended they cant kill in their own weapons, thats why aatrox keeps going on about prison and lonelyness. he is literally in a prison that is his own weapon and is now immortal, literally unkillable. there is no known way to kill a darkin, only way to defeat them is to destroy the host body and reseal them temporarily. so all that happened and i understand aatrox, in fact if he was real i would also stand alongside him and the other darkin. they protected the world for too many years to count and their thanks was death to the weaker ones and torture via solitary imprisonment for eternity for the stronger. makes an almost ironic parelel to the real world where veterans are forgotten about and left on the street and to suffer from any mental issues they may have. despite how aatrox is, he still has affection and care for his fellow darkin. he is their general and always will be, he will help and support his fellow darkin and they will help him in his quest to destroy all.

Aatrox was once an ascended god warrior from Shurima. Ascension is a magic ritual which forges a worthy human into a god-like being. The ancient empire of Shurima had quite a few god warriors so they were basically unstoppable. But then, something happened (read "Where Icathia Once Stood") and most ascended were corrupted by battling the voidborns that made their way to Shurima. Those fallen god-warriors were called "darkins" by the common people and after the fall of the empire, they made their own armies and battled each other for control until the entire continent was ravaged. The targonian aspects decided to step in and get rid of those failed experiments as the targonians were the ones who gave the Shurimans the power of ascension in the first place. Read "Twilight of the Gods") Now, the few darkins that are still out there are trapped in endless nothingness. Unless a poor soul touches the artifact where the soul of a darkin is entrapped. In which case the darkin soul can take over the body. Aatrox uses blood magic to try to form his host into his old ascended body but all he can achieve is a crude mockery of his former glory. Him using the body burns it out so he needs to take over a tons of bodies just so he can remain outside his prison for a longer amount of time. There are more details of course, so I can only recommend to look up darkins, Aatrox, Varus and Kayn together with the short stories on universe. Also Shurima and Targon if you want more context.

He was forced to endure endless feeling of choking, because he could not breath in or out. He was forced to be trapped with only his mind for thousands of years with most likely for him feeling it as he was for milions or maybe even bilions of years in that darkness alone with his mind and nightmares of a war against force so alien, brutal and terrifying that even gods could not endure it mentaly. Pantheon's lore is one of the very best from league, and his voice lines foreshadow it He was a normal human soldier named atreus, he was one of the weakest but his will to never surrender eventually maked him to be one lf the best, when some barbarians attacked his town and the aspect of sun refused to help he climbed mount targon himself to get the power of gods with his best friend, his best friend died just before getting at the top, when he got there the aspect of war named Pantheon appeared but he considered atreus unworthy because he was a loser, and instead of giving him his power he just took his body and trapped him in his own mind Now Pantheon with his boides went to hunt the darkin, and eventually fighted with aatrox, the fight destroyed mountains but at the end Aatrox impaled Pantheon in his sword killing him (before pantheon's lore rework we tought that aspects couldnt die and only their host dies and the aspect return to the heavens, but aatrox is so powerful that he killed the aspects, destroying the constelation of war at the same time) but when Pantheon died, Atreus regained his body, and he woke up impaled on aatrox sword, he looked at him and spit him in the face, aatrox just left him in the ground cuz he tought he would also die, but Atreus managed to stand up and go tho his best friend wife, who healed him Many days after the barbarians returned and Atreus with the "turned off" weapons of Pantheon went there, but when he got there he found them destroyed, it was aatrox doing, in that moment he realized that even tough the barbarians were not his friends, they were equal, and he realized that the gods are the problem, so he put himself within Aatrox and the Barbarians, Aatrox mocked him, without Pantheon what he could possibly do? Aatroxs blows made Atreus to fall on his knees again and again, but while hearing the screams from the barbarians that were left, he filled himself in courage, and the weapons of the aspectet ligthed up, with a powerful jump, he cutted aatrox arm, making both the body and the sword fall to the ground, aatrox was forced to escape, at the end atreus was the lost one standing, and since that day, he promised to fight anyone with a power so great that could only be used for destruction

Actually Aatrox can become this huge, but he will burn out his flesh faster and burn out the host. He can wary in sizes, but his real size is same as an avrage person, myb slightly higher. Same as he grow, so can the sword, but the sword when without the host, is size so a human can pick him, it would be wierd for an avrage human to pick up 10m high sword

Just so you know why aatrox is so mad. Being trapped inside weapons is horrible. And aatrox was basically the first to be trapped. So it was like an unperfected “prototype” seal. What it meant for aatrox is eternal suffering. Event though he was a sword, he still had human (or demi god i guess) needs. So he had the need to eat and drink. But with no body he could not. So he suffered long years of starvation and thurst. But worse than that is that he still needed to breath. But without a nose or lungs he could not. So, for the whole time that he was in sword form, he was suffocating. Thats plenty reason to be murderously mad in my book.

Mount Targon is the largest mountain in Runeterra and almost impossible to climb. If you do, however, sometimes the sky opens and you will be chosen to be host of an "aspect" which is basically a god that lives in "Targon Prime", a completely different realm than Runeterra. Pantheon is the targonian Aspect of War. Aspects usually have a human host and most aspects cooperate with the host. Pantheon was different and completely took over the body of Atreus. Sucked for Atreus but when Aatrox and Pantheon fought against each other, and Aatrox stabbed him, the aspect of war perished. But Atreus resurfaced, clinging to life. He even managed to "kill" a surprised Aatrox, sending him back into his prison. Because the aspect of war cannot vanish completely as long as war exists, Atreus gained a fraction of the aspects power. It is uncertain whether the aspect will reform or what will happen to Atreus. He is not 100% human anymore even though he would hate to hear that. Atreus objective is to eradicate the targonian aspects because of what Pantheon did to him. Which means he's at odds with quite a few League characters who currently serve as hosts of aspects. All that info is basically confined in Pantheons biography.

The Darkins were Ascendeds, just like Nasus, Renekton and Azir, these old ascendeds were created as a means to fight the Void that was invading Icathia, a region of shurima, but the void corrupts everything and the ascended are no exception, they heard voices on the back of their heads and grew more violent over time, they started waging wars between one another and layed waste to cities and villages with no regards to the people, then an aspect(the same kind of beign that used to possess pantheon) tricked the darkins and transformed and imprisoned them into weapons, now they need someone to pick the weapon up so they can possess the body in order to move around. Aatrox used to be different before he got reworked into the one you see now, riot made it so that the old aatrox fought against pantheon, they both killed each other, pantheon died and Atreus was left, and Aatrox found a new body and became now what he is. The voice lines you see mentioning other champions are just interactions he has with other champions on the game, and the game itself is not cannon, so those voice lines can be considered as a "what if" he found himself against those champions and won the fight.

Brother, old aatrox was retconned the moment he got reworked, in the lore aatrox(this one, there is no other) killed pantheon, the aspect of war, but atreus survived, after few months they faced off again, and pantheon did manage to cut of his sword arm and seal him back in sword, but not for long, since a new host picked his sword up.

The thing is, Aatrox is insane, literally insane. He is by far the most depressed champion in the game. He isn't simply going with bloodlust, he has gone mad. He was once a god, a literal one, a hero many people looked up to. A warrior that saved his comrades and fellows in Shurima from the terrors of the Void. All current Darkins (MOST of the former Ascended) did, with a cost, the cost being their sanity. The sheer abominations of the Void have driven them insane in the process of a long, hopeless battle. Soon, the Shruima fell with the betrayal of Xerath, and chaos reigned. Ascended fell against each other, they all wanted supreme control, they went into wars, ravaged whole armies, enslaved people. Most of them were bloodlusted. This was a threat to the whole word, so the Aspects intervened, especially The Aspect of Twilight, aka Zoe. Darkins, except for 3 that we know of (Aatrox, Rhaast and Va(a)rus) were destroyed. But the remaining 3 were unbreakable, indestructible. Also there is the fact that they didn't work together, they were in different regions of the continent. Aatrox was in a battle against Pantheon, but that "battle" was a trick against Aatrox, planned by Aspect of Twilight. He was entrapped into his own sword, unable to see, unable to feel, unable to hear, unable to breathe. Just imagine, for long, long years, you feel the need to breath, but you cannot breath as you have no lungs, you want to see but you cannot see as you have no eyes. He has been living in hell for a long time. He has gone insane, he wants to die but he is indestructible, no one can kill him. A mortal picks up the blade, he immediately takes over the control of the body, tries to transform that vessel into his former glorious self, but to no avail. All he can see is a crude, decaying flesh, a mockery of his former glory. He hates himself, he just wants to die. After such long time, the only salvation that he can hope for, is the death of EVERYTHING. He doesn't particularly hate everyone, he just thinks that if everything dies, he would die too. So he goes on, killing everything he comes across. Hoping that he will be destroyed in the process or as a result. A truly depressing fate for a glorious warrior.

One who bears the burden of every last dead soldier's soul as he carries them across the Bone River. One who has instructed his followers in the way of soothing the itch of phantom limbs, and calming the old veteran who awakens in the dark of night screaming for fallen friends. In ancient Shurima, long before the desert sands swallowed the empire, the warrior, Aatrox found himself standing in front of the divine sun disc. Blessed by the power of the sun itself Aatrox became an Ascended with angel-like wings and armor that shone like the golden light of dawn, with the power of a thousand constellations. He was a noble defender of Shurima, the vanguard of every conflict, so true and just, that the other god-warriors stood by his side, and ten thousand mortals of Shurima marched behind him. When Setaka, the Ascended warrior-queen called for his help against the rebels of Icathia, Aatrox answered without hesitation. However, no one predicted the extent of the horrors, the grinding annihilation of all life it encountered, that the Icathian rebels, consumed by The Void would unleash. After many years of desperate battle, after battle, after battle, Aatrox and his brethren sealed the largest rifts shut, and found themselves triumphant over The Void. Though they were victorious, the surviving Ascended, the self described Sunborn, found themselves forever changed by the terrors of The Void, and self infliction of blood magic. Though Shurima triumphed, they all had lost something in their victory… even the noble Aatrox. And in time, Shurima fell, as all nations are doomed to. Without anything to defend, or the threat of The Void to fight against, the noble Sunborn began to clash with one another. Mortals fleeing this destructive conflict came to know them by a new mocking name: The Darkin. Fearing that the fallen Ascended were as much of a threat to the world as The Void, the Targonians, enlightened by the Aspect of Twilight, and the newly reborn Aspect of War united thousands to fight against the corrupted Sunborn. In the end, Aatrox was pulled into the blade he wielded, and forever bound his immortal essence to it, doomed to endless life. The prison sealed him in suffocating, eternal darkness, robbing him even of the ability to perish. He could not see, hear or feel, he was doomed to endure endless choking, as he could not breathe in, or out. For centuries he was trapped with only his mind intact, a war against himself so alien, brutal and terrifying that even gods would crumble under the mental drain. He strained against the hellish confinement, until some nameless mortal was foolish enough to wield the blade. Aatrox seized upon the opportunity, and took over their body, only to realize, he was deformed, only a fraction of his once noble self. The warrior, who appeared as a divine sunlight, now took shape as an unholy, dark avatar. Aatrox searched runeterra desperately, for a way to return to his previous form.. but it was all in vain. In time, he realized that he will never be released of this hellish cage. The flesh he stole, shaped crudely, began to feel like a mockery of his former glory, a cage only slightly larger than the sword. The heavenly powers Aatrox once wielded, have vanished, with all memory. Raging against this injustice Aatrox arrived at a conclusion. If he could not destroy the blade, or return to his once noble self, then he would embrace oblivion instead, and now he clings to a blind hope: if he could not die, he will drive existence into one last apocalyptic battle, where everything, and EVERYTHING would be destroyed… then maybe he and the blade will cease to exist.

Aatrox speaks in the third person because he is constantly trying to convince himself that he must do this. If you read his bio, at the end it mentions that he thinks that if he can make everything in the world come to one apocalyptic war that would ultimately destroy everything... maybe his own immortality would be destroyed as well, something that can only come from a prisoners desparation. He is afraid, but he talked about himself as something he is and he thinks he should be. This is also why he taunts and makes jokes alot, anything to destract him from his reality. But ultimately its like feeding a fire, if he does not kill, he cant reform his body and if he cant reform his body he will return into the unending darkness of his sword prison. That is why in his story it mentions that even his body is a prison, only slightly bigger then the sword.

Don't forget when he stabbed the aspect of wars incarnate so hard that the aspect of war literally died making Aatrox the only killer of a god. Also, Aatrox is the sword not the monster so when he speaks in 3rd person he's talking to the monster that he created in order to wield him. Zoe was the one that gave whoever the knowledge of how to trap him in the sword.

In the video they skip pantheon's interactions with other champs, he has a lot of voice lines against aatrox for example: Aatrox would drown this world in blood just to stain the heavens Aatrox, The world Ender! But from death, comes life The last words from a darkin arent his own, but the cries of humanity And aatrox also has a lot more of voice lines against pantheon than the one he said in the video, in fact they both have voice lines that activates just as the match starts if they are in enemies teams

The aspect of Twilight at that time had a different girl as a host back in the day. it's a fantastic short story and some sort of sequel to "Where Icathia once stood", the single best short story in the lore imo. Heavily recommend to check both stories out.

If you wanna know more about Aatrox, you should check out his Character interactions. You heard some of them here, but theres more of them - and some of them are fun! But yeah, The Darkin came to save Runeterra from the void from somewhere else. They were training the world to survive ruin. But people thought them tyrannical, so they sealed them into weapons. Rhaast, Varus and Aatrox. If a mortal grabs the weapon, the Darkin takes control of the body.

Because he is immortal and cannot die conventionally, he came to the following conclusion: If he creates a catastrophy, if he becomes a doomsday event so potent that the very concept of existence can be destroyed, then maybe that will allow him to die.
