I still admire the amount of time and effort you put in to both the actual processing, and the explanation of the tools you use. Keep it up, your work is appreciated.

Bruce I was re watching a denoise video to refresh my grey matter and noticed the Heroine is in episode 19 as well.

More than likely!😃

I like these videos, I swear I always learn something new or a new way of doing something any time I watch someone else process an image. I'd never really thought about using multiple tabs on the drawn and parametric mask to really refine the selection, I'd only ever used one.

Combining masks is once of darktable's great strengths, in my opinion.

well done!, i do a lot of cosplay photography, so i can appreciate this edit, as i am doing 100's of batch edits too!!

Cool! If you're on FB, you should post some of your image in the darktable unofficial group.

Bruce just a suggestion...use the tone eq preset "relight" You may need to adjust exposure a bit or tweak opacity but it usual is a really nice basic adjustment to a darkish image that you want to lift a bit. Boris and others have a preset I also use which is a straight line increase to max ...you can also make one with a lower slope... One other useful one can be an instance of exposure with a parametric mask dragging the right slider all the way left...so a sort of luminosity mask and blend that in addition mode... this lifts shadows and you can boost that by adding some exposure ...

Great tips. Thanks! I'll explore those.

Hi Bruce. Thanks very much for all your work producing these videos. I just watched your very helpful most recent Darktable for newbies 4 part guide. In that you mention that some of your older videos dive into the components in more detail. I wonder if you thought it may be helpful to identify a selection of your videos as a playlist for anyone coming completely new and what those videos would be. e.g. It may be the 4 newbies guides, processing in raw video, and then a selection of 6 or 7 most commonly used modules?
@audio2u2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the kind words. Yeah, definitely each noobie's series, the scene-referred v display-referred video, and then a handful of species module videos (filmic rgb, colour calibration, tone equalizer.... There's probably a couple more but those would be a good starting point).

Unpopular opinion maybe, but I actually think sigmoid does a better job with less work 90% of the time. In most cases this is good enough, especially when batch editing. Only for the like 4-5 star pictures that I do more in depth edits on I sometimes use Filmic.
@emrg7772 ай бұрын
This image shows the classic issue with v6 and v7 filmic... using v5 with no for color preservation and tweaking the midtone saturation will also give a pleasing look...I agree though sigmoid is generally good out of the gate with filmic having some advantages esp if you use v5 as it doesn't have the gamut handcuffs that create that salmon color...
@audio2u2 ай бұрын
Interesting. So, the salmon artifact is something that appeared with filmic rgb v6? I've never noticed it before. Maybe it just requires the right image to reveal it?
@emrg7772 ай бұрын
@@audio2u There are quite a few threads in pixls on it ...ie complaints about salmon skys...I think its the hue preserving impact of Aureliens code...its explained in principle in the manual at the end of the filmic section in the background and caveats sections... basically there is some gamut control in v6 and v7 that is not in v5 and so in v5 you can get those more orange and yellows in the sky even if they are hue shifts :)

I would've expected you checked the "toggle clipping information" button - aren't you afraid of clipping in this case? The cloak seems deeply saturated to me, it will probably clip. What's you opinion on that? Do you ignore clipping as long as the image looks good to the naked human eye?
@audio2u2 ай бұрын
Good point. I should have checked that. I used to always check gamut, and I've been a bit slack on that front lately. Thanks for the reminder.

Feathering radius on the mask use to improve the blending. I think you would do it else, but I didn't see you do it with this example. Otherwise a very good demonstration of the awesome masking system in Darktable.
@audio2u2 ай бұрын
Feathering on which part of the mask? I was comfortable with the amount of feathering that I had on each section, but each to their own! 😃
@Eigil_Skovgaard2 ай бұрын
@@audio2u You are talking about the fall-off between the full and the dotted line of the drawn mask. The feathering seems to be a blend in feature along the outer part of the mask.
@audio2u2 ай бұрын
Hmm, I'm not convinced that there is actually a difference between those 2 things. I could be wrong... It's been known to happen! 😃
@Eigil_Skovgaard2 ай бұрын
@@audio2u Create a mask with a certain fall off and let it show in yellow. Then move the sliders Details threshold, Feathering radius, Blurring radius, Mask opacity, Mask contrast one by one and watch the impact on the yellow mask. The only one imo that is rather hard to evaluate is Blurring radius. Feathering radius and Mask contrast are both very useful and easy to adjust with the yellow mask on.
