The guy on the right is correct. Under A Funeral Moon was designed to sound exactly like what it is. To criticize it harshly means it's not your forte. That's cool too. But the whole point has sort of been missed then. I am not a fan of symphonies, but I understand they are designed to have that specific sound. Thus, I have no commentary about them. A raw Black Metal work is the same way.

This is ace. After a few beers with the guys last week and being scolded, I literally just started on a Darkthrone binge. I knew absolutely nothing about them aside from a few albums/songs, but I'm now most of the way through their discography. I LOVE Soulside Journey. Can't believe I've never listened to it before (Goatlord was pretty neat too). My next favourite stuff so far has been the Ravishing Grimness/Plagueweilder/Hate Them period. Panzerfaust is great too. I get the feeling I missed the boat on the OG BM 'trinity'', and struggle with the sound of them a bit more. 100% understand why people love those 3 records though. Gonna be listening to the last handful of albums tomorrow. D-beat crust all the way!

@M.H6913 жыл бұрын
Under a Funeral Moon is my number one - in hindsight, a transitional record, but I think it's as dark as hell, really evil, brutally raw atmosphere. But Transylvanian Hunger is their most extreme statement - it's like Filosem, closer to dark ambient / noise music than metal, even though it's being made by a metal band. I know this sounds weird, but listen to it on headphones late at night, when it's quiet and turn the volume down. Creepy as hell - it'll take you places.
@thrallsofmetal3 жыл бұрын
Necrotic Nick- Honestly, it sounds like you'd get the ASMR effect with the low volume drone of Hunger in headphones. It'd probably sound like a bunch of static whispers.
@michaelhudson29123 жыл бұрын
I honestly don't think it's transitional, I think it's its own beast. It's their most bizarre and alien sounding album, along with Goatlord.
@zhepkin3 жыл бұрын
I think Under A Funeral Moon is their most extreme statement, Blaze being the transitional record. Under A Funeral Moon is more 80's worship, more diversity than Transylvanian Hunger, but still primitive and with a lot more kick to it I would say.

Nick made a very good point when talking about the 'Transylvanian Hunger'. Darkthrone's trinity introduced a series of tropes, a style, and an esthetic (not merely visually, but in overall vibe) that is still woven through virtually every black metal album produced to this day. Although my primary preferred style is atmospheric black metal, preferably by bands that are so completely underground that Darkthrone would be considered mainstream by comparison, I still hold Darkthrone to be one of my top three artists ever, from any genre, based on their influence alone. In consideration of my many, many years being into crust punk, I absolutely love the band's punkish and Dennis Dread-illustrated period ('The Cult Is Alive', even through Dread didn't illustrate the cover, through 'Circle The Wagons'. (Speaking of which, if you guys ever need input from someone deep into crust punk and its various connections and inroads through and between metal genres, let me know.) And finally, I greatly admire Darkthrone's approach in recent years (from 'The Underground Resistance' through today), which sees them exploring a slightly different take on honoring genres that influenced them over the years.

Don’t be too hard on Jon for his ranking, it’s understandable given his newness to the genre, massive respect to him for listening to them all. I also understand Nick’s ranking of the unholy trinity as well as coming back to those albums after a minute of not listening to them they don’t stand up to as when you first heard them back in the day. Shredlord gets major props for defending the True Black Metal which was the dark place these albums came from. That being said Transylvanian Hunger is my least favourite of the trinity. The Bass Drums even Boom during the slower parts too. 2. A Blaze in the Northern Sky 3. Panzerfaust 4. Soulside Journey 5. Transilvanian Hunger 6. Hate Them 7. Sardonic Wrath 8. First time visiting your channel. Interesting hearing your different takes on the Darkthrone discography. I've been listening to this band for a really long time. Not that I want to change anyone's mind about anything, but I strongly suggest more listens to Under a Funeral Moon. The production is really appropriate and, I think, not at all bad. Turn it up and you'll even hear how loud and prominent the bass is. The drums sound very real and live -- the way a drum kit with a few mics is supposed to sound, and teh guitars, while maybe a little quiet, are perfectly clear and audible. just about every riff is a standout. Forget everything about how abrasive and ugly teh album is *supposed* to be and just listen to it. There's more going on there than what might first be apparent, and a fair amount of variety in tempos and riffing styles even. Of course, Bathory was probably the biggest influence, but Darkthrone have one great advantage over Bathory -- they always sounded like a real band playing in a room, even if it was just two dudes.

Goatlord WITH vocals was definitely at the bottom of my list. However if you get their demo compilation "The Frostland tapes" the original instrumental version is on it and its my favorite thing they've ever done. Without the vocals the songs really shine. As far as the production goes, there was no production. This is literally a boombox recording of a rehearsal that they then added vocals to. At the beginning of this its mentioned Fenriz isn't a technical player, but if you listen to what he's doing on Goatlord, the guy is playing insane stuff. And the instrumental version on Frostland also has a drum solo that was cut from the vocal version that really showcases just how good he is.
@DamnableReverend3 жыл бұрын
I think Goatlord sounds fine and I don't mind the vocals at all, though I can totally see why someone might want an instrumental version. It sounds like a band playing in the room you are in and that's great -- totallyd oesn't need "production". Goatlord is the first Darkthrone release I loved almost instantly and the second one I ever listened to, after Transilvanian Hunger, which I did not take to nearly as well, at least at that time. The death metal magic is really there on Goatlord and in some ways I prefer it to Soulside Journey, which is a great album I always wished sounded a little rawer (IE, a little more like Autopsy and a little less like the second Dismember album).

A real fun Episode guys👍 And i wouldnt argue with any if your approaches. Thats Shows hiw great this guys are... something for everyone, always damn true to themselves, just doing what they wanna do and never giving a fuck for opinions. I am not a black metal guy at all, but i love this guys and every album for what it is... if its punk or black metal. Yes

Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! This was honestly one for my favorites to go over because they're sound changed so much over the years. I love their punk like spirit in terms of just doing whatever they felt like doing regardless of people's opinions of them. I can't wait to hear what the next one sounds like.

Loving the content so I have been watching the old ranking videos. I have only heard Eternal Hails......, the Unholy Trinity and Panzerfaust so I can't give a complete ranking of the band but I would rank the albums like this: Eternal Hails......>>>>>>>>>>A Blaze In The Northern Sky>>Panzerfaust>>>>>>Under A Funeral Moon>>Transylvanian Hunger.

Hey @thrallsofmetal have you guys ever thought about doing an electric wizard or Alice in chains ranking. Just some food for thought. They are both amazing in their own right.

Love Hardship of the Scots but Darkside of Aquarius was the first thing I thought too when I heard that riff

On a side note, Phil Anselmo took the band name for Superjoint Ritual from a lyric of a song from A Blaze in the Northern Sky

5. Plagueweilder 4. Hate Them 3. Under a Funeral Moon 2. Panzerfaust 1. A Blaze in the Northern Sky Panzerfaust is one of my all time favorite vocal performances. Put on one song from Transilvanian Hunger and it's cool, two songs and it gets kind of dull.
@thrallsofmetal3 жыл бұрын
Necrotic Nick- I loved the vocals on Panzerfaust. I think the drunk take make them even more unrestrained and raw honestly.

Cool video! Kudos to Jon for sitting through the full Darkthrone discography even though it's pretty apparent that much of it isn't really his cup of tea - even though I disagree with his takes, I respect his taking the time to listen to the material. Good takes for the most part otherwise, although as a diehard fan of the pure BM sound I have to rank Under a Funeral Moon and Transilvanian Hunger at the top - alongside masterpieces like Panzerfaust, A Blaze, Soulside. I also like Total Death, it's got a pretty good sound to it. Goatlord with vocals is very bad, but the instrumental version as found on Frostland Tapes is pretty awesome, so I'd suggest any fans of Soulside check that out. I have a soft spot for their mid-era stuff, especially Plaguewielder, Hate Them and Sardonic Wrath. They do some good stuff there. But if a stumble around Cult is Alive but starting with FOAD I enjoy their blackened punk stuff too.

You should do a Windir discography ranking. Those guys were a Norwegian blackened folk metal band that lasted until 2004 and only released four albums.
@thrallsofmetal3 жыл бұрын
Necrotic Nick- I like Windir but the cut off for a ranking is 5 studio releases whether they be full lengths or EPs. Vreid is more of possibility since they had more albums and contain some of the ex-members from Windir.

Since Under A Funeral Moon is my favorite, I nearly gave up on you guys... but honestly you won me over. Dig the channel, gotta say though, how did you not mention the ridiculous floor tom on Under A Funeral Moon? I have a 10 inch woofer in my living room, and that shit shakes my house. That’s my personal highlight of that album. Y’all are underrating that production a bit (unlike Transylvanian Hunger it was done in a studio with a pro engineer). Best bass sound of the earlier period in my opinion. Lo-Fi and fuzzy and balances out the distant drums and cold guitar tone nicely.
@thrallsofmetal3 жыл бұрын
Necrotic Nick- Well, thanks for sticking with us, bro! The lo fi, more minimalist/ atmospheric stuff is still difficult for me to get into. I prefer more dynamics in the songwriting. The static blast on Transylvanian Hunger started to grate on me after awhile but at least Funeral Moon was a bit more varied. Blaze was hard to beat though for me since it captures a lot of my favorite aspect of black metal across the board. Overall this was a fun discography to go over though.

I am hopeful for a return to some of these rankings. Just to see the growth and variation of what you guys think with the records. Especially Jon, homeslice had a tall order with this one... but he needs to knock Goatlord out of his top five. -Insert "Fucking Embarrassing" gif here- 😂😂😂 Much love to you guys.

The new album Astral Fortress is fucking fantastic too! Trouble is tho, a lot of their older albums’ production truly bothers my sensory issues, as much as I’d like to enjoy it cuz I love their style, it’s just hard for me personally

Guys, they wrote a song called 'Canadian metal" because they love Canadian metal, not because they think they're not from norway or something. That was a weird comment. As someone who has seen most of the bands they talk about at fun shows throughout the years, it was a pretty nice tribute. Yes, newer Darkthrone is very goofy, but it's nothing if not sincere. I do wish Fenriz and Nocturno would come together a bit mroe on the songs. Fenriz's songs are pretty well-written but sometimes a little too straightforward. Nocturno is aiming for more with more stuff goign on, but it doesn't always come together. Anyway, I enjoy what they've been doing in the last buncho f years even though it does have its weird elements taht will mean "niche appeal" -- like silly vocals and lyrical concepts. That's just where they are now and what they want to do, and as a fan of the band I'm ok with it.
