Great upload! Funny fact: Goatlord is one of my favourites. The reason for this is because Fenriz drumming is so very creative and technical on it, which for me is very stimulatung to listen to. If someone is interested in how great Fenriz really are on drums, then that someone needs to listen to Goatlord. Cheers!

Personally i really love the 3 last albums, Old star, Artic thunder and The underground resistance. Dark, heavy, maybe not very atmospheric but it do set a mood. And the songs are quite different from everything else i've heared from them before, songs such as Valkyrie. Though my all time favorite is Under a funeral moon.

Under a Funeral Moon is my favourite. Transylvanian Hunger a close second. Then maybe Total Death and Plaugewielder for me. I kind of dig it, I like it more than most albums they have released the last fifteen years but maybe that doesn't say that much.

Total Death was also an interesting one for me to return to recently. It definitely felt a little lacklustre when I was first discovering their catalog. But... Now being much more acquainted with newer Darkthrone, Total Death feels refreshingly... Well, like the old Darkthrone. A very underrated album. Also, the standout for me on Plaguewielder was "Command". One of my favourite songs from them after the "classic" era.

@@RautaMetal I'm curious about your opinion on the lyrical content of The Cult is Alive. I think it's the most off-putting aspect for me. And (as much as I don't generally pay a lot of attention to lyrics in black metal), the childishness of "Graveyard Slut" and the self-important snobbery of "Too Old, Too Cold" for example, definitely intrude upon the listening experience for me.

Wish to also add that I agree completely on "A Blaze in the Northern Sky". It seemed brilliant when I first got into black metal. Returning to it more recently, it's a bit of a chore to listen to all the way through. I 100% agree on the very tight top two albums though. The only track that bothers me a bit on Funeral Moon is "To Walk the Infernal". Because it's just too much of a (rather weak, in my opinion) homage to "Enter the Eternal Fire".

@@RautaMetal The last Darkthrone album I forced myself to like was Ravishing Grimness, then they more or less lost me. Arctic Thunder and Old Star spontaneously gave me the feeling I got from Total Death way back - first "What is this, what is this production, WTF?" And then creepingly increasing awesomeness with every listen. Even Panzerfaust was the same for me back in the day, since I was very much a child of the second wave and really loathed "old school" black metal. Went from "this isn't Transilvanian Hunger" to drunken sing alongs in ten or so listens. As a sidenote, I enjoy AT/OS more as atmospheric constructions than as rock albums, though. The fragments of black metal riffs mixed with early doom/Black Sabbath stuff and Celtic Frost, all irrationally and repetitively arranged... It's awesome. That being said, I also wouldn't force myself to anything here - these WERE rather obvious growers for me already on the first, or at least the second listen. If they're not for you, they're not, and that's fine.
@RautaMetal

@@extrudersfx4571 Thanks for a good comment! I guess that mentioned doom/Black Sabbath thing is the stuff that doesn't really get m going. I'm all for old Celtic Frost, but trad doom isn't my cup of tea. Mostly anyway.

@extrudersfx4571 5 жыл бұрын
Rauta Actually, I’m not really into doom either, with some few exceptions. It’s the combination that does it for me, somehow. Also, the mindless repetition works for me - on these two albums, even if it was offputting at first. Other than that, I understand your general opinion - I can’t for the life of me get ”Circle the Wagons” and most other post-90’s Darkthrone releases to work for me, and I really think there is some random element on Old Star and Arctic Thunder that clicks with me personally, rather than some brilliant new direction taken by Darkthrone.
@RautaMetal
@RautaMetal 5 жыл бұрын
@@extrudersfx4571 Yeah, I get you! For me certain types of repetition (thinking now of some tunes on Transilvanian Hunger) does it for me. It just sometimes clicks. Arctic Thunder was for me a positive surprise, but still a tad bit off, so didn't bother buying it. Old Star then again, IMO, suffers from the Metallica syndrome: songs are too long for their own good. Duke of Gloat is a strong track though.

I think Darkthrone is the most fluid band as far as rankings go. My opinion on worst to best has probably changed more drastically than any other band (definitely more than any other black metal band). I will say our biggest disagreement is the more TRAD-sounding albums. I think they nailed this perfectly, so I rank them above a few of the later BM they did. Here are my current rankings, surely to change a few more times every time I binge, except for #1. 1. Transilvanian Hunger 2. Hate Them 3. Panzerfaust 4. A Blaze in the Northern Sky 5. Under a Funeral Moon 6. Circle the Wagons 7. The Underground Resistance 8. The Cult is Alive 9. Sardonic Wrath 10. Total Death 11. Ravishing Grimness 12. Plaguewielder 13. Soulside Journey 14. Old Star 15. Eternal Hails...... 16. Arctic Thunder 17. Goatlord (Instrumental Version) 18. F.O.A.D. 19. Dark Thrones and Black Flags 20. Goatlord (With Vocals) I could say more good than bad on just about every album. Last September I was smoking weed with IA from Ahdistuksen Aihio and I learned how huge of an album Total Death was for Finnish black metal heads. He said he had no classic metal background at all, but Hate Them was just so visceral that it propelled him into getting fully into black metal. I had a realization that maybe my love of black metal doesn't come from TRAD and NWOBHM or Death/Thrash, but perhaps from my punk/oi!/hardcore side. Perhaps why Clandestine Blaze is my favorite Finnish bm, and it exists thanks to Darkthrone. But you can also hear Hate Them's influence on Shatraug, no? Especially that first song... Great video!

I saw pictures of him wen I was younger wearing Darkthrone shirts in Pantera photos. I was interested in checking them out but had no idea which one to get. The only one I could order at the time from my local record store was A Blaze In The Northern Sky. I had to get it imported which took a month to get, but the wait was well worth it. That record changed my life & got me into more extreme & underground shit for sure. This is almost impossible but I'll try my personal top 5's are 1. Under A Funeral Moon 2. Transilvanian Hunger 3. Let's try some Fat Lizard, and "A Blaze in the Northern Sky", good mix. That's hard to judge what's my favorite in Darkthrone spectrum of releases. Of course it falls in the -90s, but the weakest link in the "early" DT is "Plaguewielder", and from that on I was not following the stuff the put out after that.. Maybe I was too tired of changing the style back and forth. Of course I bought the new releases and listened to them and there were some "blinking" star moments there and there, but they had it out of hand. I mean of course every record has it's own theme, and style. But when it came to "Hate Them" I think.. It was slippery slope after that. "Hate Them" had ups and sadly most downs. Many people who has listened DT from the 90s would agree with me. "Old Star" has some goosebumpy moments you know you get back to old stuff, but leaves you there. I don't know, it's nineties band and best to leave it there. And if I would need to choose the best release it is "A Blaze in the Northern Sky". And of course I love Transilvanian Hunger (I own the Norsk Arisk Black Metal CD, fuck you too), Panzerfaust, Under a Funeral Moon et cetera et cetera.

Darkthrone is a very versatile band. Only posers use the whole "Darkthrone clones bullshit. Darkthrone has gone through Death Metal, Black Metal, Black n Roll, Punk, Speed Metal and Old School Heavy Metal sounds. For me their best black metal work is Under a funeral Moon. Way way better than anything on Transylvanian Hunger. Panzerfaust is a close second musically but I still can't get over the vocal mixing.

I just love the vocal mixing on Panzerfaust! To me the outcome is probably the best in all black metal. And to be honest, I don't know why I used to like UAFM over TH and why I now feel that TH is better than UAFM. To me they are both 10 out 10 albums.
@HipsterBlackMetalOfficial
@HipsterBlackMetalOfficial 5 жыл бұрын
@@RautaMetalI love panzerfaust's riffs. Very atmospheric but the vocals could be a little quieter in the mixing. Though they are good considering they have no reverb or shit like that. UAFM's production and song writing is perfect. Raw, Buzzy guitar tones, Necroish vocals and vibe, drumming has raw cymbals and a good snare for black metal. TH to me is just too flat in production. It's like listening through an AM radio flat, but it's not raw like UAFM if that makes sense. Also Ironic for a black metal album it's one of the few BM albums where the Bass Guitar is very prominent. What bothers me more than production is that I personally don't think TH's song writing or song progression is very good. Drums stay at the same slow tempo for each song, songs drag on way too much for me even though it's a max of 2-6 riffs per song. They aren't bad riffs but 6 plus minutes drags on for me and it starts sounding like one big song to me. Still it's a classic BM album, the photocopy album cover is Iconic and Darkthrone's early BM sound definitely is important to black metal's sound. Actually, I recommend you listen to TH at a faster speed. It makes it such a better album actually. Speed it up 25% percent.
@RautaMetal
@RautaMetal 5 жыл бұрын
@@HipsterBlackMetalOfficial An interesting comment, that speeding up thing that is. But yes, I totally get your point TH can feel like quite repetitive. But for me there's something magical in it. Much like with UAFM. I like the hypnotic yet necrosound approach a lot.

Yeah, well, I was always disappointed in RG quite a bit after such as streak of really strong albums. It's not to say that RG is weak or anything, but it's "just" quite good, not great. And the same applies to Plaguewielder. Totally listenable, but not worshippable if that makes sense :)

@@RautaMetal I get what you're saying. It must have been different for someone who was following along right with them. I didn't get in to Darkthrone until the early 2000s,as I didnt have a good way of getting cds. So any band I liked,I had to get what I could through mail order. Even bands from where I live,like Death and Morbid Angel,I couldn't really find them anywhere. I dunno,I guess RG struck a chord with me-at least the cold,angry,stagnant part. Great video. Big fan of ‘the Cult is Alive’ myself too. Sounds really angry and raw. Almost more rock than metal. In the sense that the songs roll. Still metal of cource. Really dig the last album: great doom riffs and of course the bleakness and repetitiveness of Transylvinian Hunger.

I think "Soulside Journey" was a try to put Swedish (-styled) Death Metal to the next Level. I understand everyone who doesn´t enjoy, but considering how most Albums of Swedish DM sounded pretty equal at that time, this one stands out with great song structures, at the cost of catchiness though, haha. Needed a few years to get into it. Maybe it´s a bit a "music for musicians" thing?..

I would agree on others, except that I don't think its song structures are not that great.
