Great review! I was over the moon when this was announced. Just like you, I smile every time I look at it. What a time for satisfying our video game nostalgia with collectable cabinets like this.

RIGHT???? They have a fix coming - will need a Windows PC to flash it though ...

The problem with the joystick is that it should have a round gate, but they gave it a square gate. The original service manual even shows the round gate on the pages that show the parts. With a round gate you can push the joystick in one of the four directions (up/down/left/right) and not have it so easily slide into the corners by mistake. I feel it's a hardware issue, as the game plays the exact same way on my MAME cabinet that has a sanwa joystick with a square gate (i never bother with the game on that cab because of that behavior).. Glad numskull is going to try and come up with a software work around. btw, the corners are used on the coconut level where you have to jump up the platforms to get to the top. If you move the joystick into the corners when you jump, he'll glide farther left or right than if you just move exactly left or right. The DIP switches are also missing a difficultly setting (novice vs expert), and ability to toggle attract mode audio. Difficulty and attract mode audio settings are also missing on their Qix cabinet.

Great review. I just received mine and agree with everything said. The cab looks great but the current joystick situation makes the game very frustrating to play (and I have owned an original cabinet so am familiar with how it should feel). I really hope they can resolve it soon - pretty disappointing at this price point.

@@DanNoguerol-p2j agreed! Nothing like the Dragons lair debacle ... But yes. If we could have at least plugged in an external USB controller? This would be less of a problem..

@Darkuni the problem would still exist even if a USB pad could be connected. The issue also occurs in MAME. In the original, the controls talk directly to the PCB but under emulation, controls talk to, and are interpreted by the emulator.

My brother was a Zookeeper Master. I think it was because we had one in the Cumberlands Farms my mother Managed for a while. I loved hanging out and playing the crap out of it. :D Wish I could afford getting one for him just as a Xmas gift, but times are tight.
