True Crime: Streets of LA is a 2003 open world action-adventure video game developed by Luxoflux and published by Activision for GameCube, PlayStation 2 and Xbox in November 2003, for Microsoft Windows in May 2004, and by Aspyr for Mac OS X in March 2005. A mobile phone adaptation was released in November 2004. The game tells the story of Nicholas Kang, an uncompromising Los Angeles police officer who is recruited into the Elite Operations Division in order to investigate a series of bombings in Chinatown. As he delves further into the case, he discovers it may be connected to the disappearance of his police-officer father twenty years previously. The game features a 240-square-mile (622 km2) re-creation of a large part of Los Angeles, including most of Beverly Hills and Santa Monica, with most street names, landmarks and highways reproduced accurately.

@@mob7981 yakuza was good and was out after but not a grand open world with véhicules, it’s also more a A-Jrpg reviving Shenmue style than anything else, meaning less streaming problems… also models in yakuza was more low poly in game and the animation was anime like, still a great and beautiful game but not the same genre… and compared to 3D models and animations in gta the series true crime is top notch, but like any games with limitation, sacrifice need to be made, there’s more things to do in San Andreas than true crime New York City or street of LA… but could have been a great rival to gta if activision didn’t killed the game and studios because of cupidity. I remember being impressed to see scars on Marcus reed face and individuals animated fingers in 2004 compared to San Andreas even if gta was better many ways… Also for GameCubes it was great to have True crime games since gta was not on GC… so yes for 2003 they did a good job… with a lot of bugs tho and nothing to do on the side except getting snoop dog bones, true crime 2 tries to give more things like fight clubs, taking taxis(before gta4) and unlimited shops etc can’t imagine the 3… sadly it will never exist.(sleeping dogs was not made by luxoflux)

Sleeping Dogs is too different in tone (aside from the zombies dlc). If Streets of LA is Vice City, then Sleeping Dogs is GTA 4. And most of the improvements are for the city itself, side content and melee combat. Driving is bad but in a different way and shooting is arguably worse.

Yea but they didnt have anywhere near the scale and scope of GTA 3, also GTA 3 actually became an international hit and thus became iconic and influenced pretty much every game after it, so it was never about being the first really, the whole visual style of radar in the bottom left and stats in a corner was also taken from GTA 3 obviously, that is why its a GTA clone cuz it looks like it could be a GTA game. Driver had very limited missions and cgi cutscenes while GTA 3 had changeable radio stations with many famous songs, in game cutscenes, proferssional voice acting, better graphics, better rendering, much more details (a fuck ton of billboards with in game commercials as an example. The world felt ALIVE, unlike Driver.

I remember because I had a M&Ms chocolate bar (which was like a limited time offer or something) and a 1 litre of Coke-Cola. The 1L was $1.50. Thank you for playing this, I completely forgot all about this game lol. I also remember the sequel somewhat. New York City and the protag named Marcus? @@arelavent3925 Yeah the one in NY was a big step up. If you get Sleeping Dogs make sure it's the definitive version, sometimes on steam sales

@@tianqi5008 yeah I’ve seen the game for less than $5. Outstanding for that price.

A great time and one of my favourite games as a kid and i think it still holds up. The fighting mechanics are great and the story could be adapted into a movie.

And honestly a video game narrated by Christopher Walken is something that we never knew we needed

This game used to be one of my favorites on the OG xbox. You could download CDs onto your console, and then select those song files to play in the radio within the game. That was the coolest tech to me back then. Listening to Nine Inch Nails driving around the streets of LA when I was 13 yrs old. That was the life.

Microsoft encouraged developers to include music from your personal collection like that on the Xbox. The PlayStation had no internal storage, so MS used the idea of your own personal music collection inside games as a marketing gimmick.

@@tin2001 yeah, but as far as I can remember, this was one of the only games that did it right. Not even the True Crime: Streets of New York sequel took advantage of the system, which sucked, because I remember looking forward to revisiting that.
