I would love this pattern for placemats. I don't usually need to wash my placemats often, but I'd want to send this sample through the washer a time or two just to be sure it could hold up to laundering without the fraying becoming any problem. Others may prefer a single color of in-between fabric, but for me the multicolor bits are what make this piece phenomenal! The denim unifies it, and the colors give it personality.

I saw an artist who put tulle over her piece before sewing down the edges just as you did around each denim piece. That stopped any little fraying bits from being a problem for any seam she didn't catch, like the overlapping bits between the tiles. Her name was Karen Eckmeier and she made gorgeous landscapes and cities with this easy piecing idea!

I think I would use just one fabric under the denim pieces, but it would be a large print with a lot of different colors - like big flowers or something. I think I will try that. You would get the same effect, but without worrying about all the pieces under the denim and getting them in just the right places. It would still look scrappy, too, if you start out with a multi-colored fabric.

I love this! It looks like cobblestones, with really interesting grout. I've seen mosaic pebbles put into grout between large cobblestones on a walkway before, and it was just stunning.

Slapping stuff together the first time is something i do with cooking. You dont gotta stress the first time you cook something to make it perfect. Youll always want to make small adjustments to any recipe because we all have personal tastes.

Love this idea! I think it’s going to look sweet when washed and frayed. …often pair flannel with denim because I live in Minnesota (the flannel shirt capital of the world)….lol….so I just cut up shirts. Our shirts are a heavier flannel so we don’t freeze 😂

If you cut up flannel shirts to make stuff with, maybe you could save the button plackets and cuffs and nice seams etc. to use for this method. It'd be a great use for otherwise wasted bits too narrow for most sewing.

With blue underneath and earth tones in place of denim it might look like stones in a river. White on blue could be clouds. Reds might look like cellular biology.

Maybe if we make a scrap quilt block and then put the denim straps on top of that, we won't have the raw edges of the color scraps, just the raw denim edges on top.
