☀️ WELCOME! ☀️ I EMPTIED MY SCRAP BIN! ♻️ With no set design plan in place, I simply started sewing scraps together: first by 2s, then by 4s, and continuing. I ended up with a BOLT of scrap fabric ready to be used in future projects! ✂️ The finished bolt is 24 feet long, and the average width is 16 inches. (7.31 meters by about 40 centimeters). Total project time 19 hours, 40 minutes (of which round one along took 9 hours).
I hope you use this idea to have some FUN with your scraps!

Oh my....you are making me cry and cry....a young lady gave me a box of tiny scraps and said pick two and sew....add another and sew....I MADE A QUEEN SIZE RAG A SCRAP QUILT....I WAS SUPER PROUD....then she said....cut that into ten inch square!!!! I WAS ANGRY I LOVE MY MASTERPIECE...so I ended up with two quilts...one with ten inch squares with beautiful two inch framing AND MY MOST PRIZED QUILT THE ONE THAT WAS JUST SCRAPS SEWN TOGETHER....thank you for your detail video....although I had tears of great memories learning how to make my VERY FIRST QUILT AS A GROWN ADULT...so today I make messy quilts and eat chocolates AND EVERYTHING IS SWEET AND PERFECT

I sew my scraps together each MONTH. I can't stand to go longer than a month. It makes me not want to go into my sewing room if I have stuff looking at me in a pile. LoL. After i sew it monthly I cut it into 12 inch squares. I have made several lap throws for the elderly in my church. I leave them on the pews and if they wish to they can take them home. If not after a month or so of cold weather I bring them home to wash. Year round I leave about 10 of them at church. The congregation knows where they are if not on a pew. I have made many for a local nursing facility as well. It's my self mission I will continue as God allows me to sew.

Thank you for doing this for us! I have made some crumb quilts and it's an amazing way to use up the smallest of pieces. Anything bigger than 1 inch by 1 inch gets used up. I recently made 41 pillows for the homeless (approx. 9 inches by 15-18 inches) with straps (often from pant legs). The stuffing I used was leftover batting, pillow stuffing, fabric that I couldn't use, cut up old socks, even the smallest pieces of thread - nothing to the landfill! It was satisfying - and very well received! I'm looking forward to getting back to my scraps; thanks for the encouragement!

I was going to do this and started to with my scraps. I realized I was finding no joy or satisfaction in doing so. I decided to donate my scraps to the local senior center since they make quilts for children in the hospital. I feel good that they are put to use for something positive not wasted and thats the perfect usefulness for my scraps. The only scraps I keep are strips now. Keep having fun , otherwise what's the point.

@@janim1249 essentally theyre using fabric dye on the finished sheet of fabric. since its made of a variety of fabrics, they wont necessarily dye to the same shade, but will end up within the same types of colours, thus creating a more uniform sheet of scrap fabric

This was a fun video to watch. I did a small scale of this project. I used up my scraps from all my mens shirts that I had cut down. There was over 50. I made my yardage 30 inches wide for the main piece and around 26 long. Then I made strips about 6 to 8 inches wide by 36 to 40 inches long. The main body I cut out a deer head and appliquéd to a large piece of material. The strips will be a wide border for a quilt I am making for my husband. It gave me satisfaction knowing I used all my material possible. You are right about the bulk and seams. I made my stitches shorter about 2 and my seam just over 1/4”. The other important part for me was the pressing. I wanted my material flat as possible. I couldn’t do my chain piecing without having my blade saver. It is definitely a game changer when working with scraps.

Hm🤔 things to think about. I help at a charity quilting group, and we make a lot of scraps. Many are even bigger than that, but generally anything not in 6” or 10” squares is “scrap” to us. Even though our scraps get recycled into fiber fill, making something useful would still be preferable. You sew a lot more efficiently than I do, so I probably can’t hold myself to 20 hours, but the amount of fabric you generated is approximately the amount needed for our quilt tops. This has inspired me, I think Im going to start messing around with some scrappy sewing and see how it goes!

I got so excited when i was scrolling and saw your video! Your bolt is beautiful. I love this idea so much. I was just thinking how if i had saved my scraps over the past 35 years, and did this with them every 3 years or so, the ever-growing bolt would be a beautiful woven tapestry of memories. There's no time like the present though, so I am going to start doing this with my scraps. I love the zero waste of this idea. I also thought, like some of the other commenters here, that the trim cuttings could be used as stuffing for 100% zero waste. Thanks for the inspiration and all the details you included like time invested and how you went about connecting them.

Instead of using a wrapping paper roll (it has acids in it that can damage the material if it takes years to sew the roll) I went down to the dollar store and bought pool noodles to wrap mine around. They can be used over and over. I get the wider ones and it cuts down in wrinkling of the scraps. I love the way you did this video. And your music was wonderful and really relaxing!

I’m doing it at the moment 18” wide and I have about 3 metres so far. No idea how I will use it. Someone suggested making a quilted jacket. 🤔 I love it when the smaller pieces all come together to make bigger pieces.

@@Deelovesgoldens Hi Dee - Here's an idea! I made a different fabric bolt over a year ago, and this is how I used the very end of it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qounhKOhoNR2qbc. But the sky is the limit! I thought about making a quilted vest for myself this time around, but not sure yet. ☀☀☀

Neat concept! I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have any hair left after that project! I almost didn’t make it through going through my scraps and cutting them into squares and strip sizes I use a lot. But now that it’s done and everything neatly organized I am so happy I stuck with it. It’s amazing all the things you can do with scraps. I recently went to a by donation garage sale. O my goodness I absolutely made out like a bandit there was so much there in fabric I found a box of 21/2 inch squares hundreds of them. I can’t list everything I got but the jewel of the day was a shoebox full of quilt blocks with the pattern and all the fabric needed to finish the quilt for $2. I ended up with 2 trash bags full of fabric and most of it vintage. I was just in heaven with that haul. Your channel is fun!

🌞☀️ thanks so much, Liz! I’m glad you enjoyed the video and the channel. I love sharing a little bit with others. I am so jealous of your garage sale haul. I have found a few neat things at estate sales and garage sales but nothing like you describe! That’s the dream, isn’t it.? 💕

This 'task' is what I call sewing meditation! Now this type of "fabric" works well for sewing shopping/tote bags that you can gift your friends. Keep an eye handy for sheets in good shape for inexpensive liner. I have several of these "scrap bags". When I go to the store, I always get comments. Plus, they are a nice reminder of prior projects.

Addictive to watch..I love scrapes😂I have done 2 crumb quilts and 2 strip quilts with scrapes like this. Most fun I have ever had! I listen to books or watch/listen to old movies while I do this mindless sewing❤❤ difference with me…I’m a crazy ironer. And starcher..so add a lot more time to my “bolt”! Plus, one box of scrapes bought at a yard sale, took we 3 wks to wash and iron to get them ready to sort and made my “scrapes”! (KH)

I cut scraps from each project into usable pieces and make the same units that are in the quilt top. Then sew those into larger units and use those in the pieced backing. The leftover scraps go into a 13 gal can, along with batting & pieces from other projects. I use this as the center of a tuffet. It works well because the center of a tuffet needs to be fairly dense to hold its shape.
