100%, I think it's easy for the adults to blame toys rather than examine their own toxic behaviour... And now we have such a wonderful variety of body types (at least compared to when I was a kid in the 90s lol) as well as types of dolls with all the various hobbies and careers they can have, etc. Or even dolls who are not even human at all 😅 like that's something that's interesting to a kid, not the waist size lol

This so much!! I remember even being confused when adults would fight and debate on TV about what dolls were teaching girls bad body image and being confused cause I legit never thought about my own body when I played with my dolls. It was adults, teachers, and relatives that were the ones that gave my body issues.

as a person who tends to have stronger interest in BJDs over fashion dolls… there is a VERY classist undertone to the gatekeeping. like there is no other reason for such a high degree of hostility against people who can’t afford $600 OOAKs. a ton of overlap there with the “no handmade, top brands only” toxic lolita fashion communities

as a child development professional, i very VERY much disagree that fashion dolls are always bad for kids. i definitely think fashion dolls should be getting more inclusive of body types (and they are! love that) but it’s really the caregivers who control what body image lessons are being learned from toys like barbies. they open up so much opportunity for dramatic play, developing empathy, learning about the world and themselves. i love being able to connect with my students about our love for the same thing!
@blondbraid7986

Yes, I couldn't agree more. Also, as someone who's actually worked in a daycare, kids are smart enough to tell the difference between a tiny plastic doll and a real human being, and kids too young to understand the difference are also too young to have enough self-awareness to worry about what others will think of their looks. I think it's just caregivers who want to absolve themselves from actually examining their own behavior around kids and what kind of role models they are.

Is it just me, but when I developed self-image issues as a kid, it was never bc of the dolls I played with. For me, it was a combination of media and seeing people who looked different from me get validation for their beauty irl. So yeah, I never really got the idea that dolls are a primary source of things like body dymorphia. Don't most kids use their imagination when playing? Then again, I can't speak for other people😅

As someone who has this condition and played with fashion dolls as a kid, I can tell you that they are misunderstanding what body dysmorphic disorder is. BDD is a serious, debilitating disorder and the causes are more complicated than playing with fashion dolls. I will say though, as a kid I felt bad that most of my barbies were all the same - white, blonde, and blue-eyed. I was a brunette brown-eyed girl and it made me sad that beautiful, perfect barbie didn’t look at all like me. I remember my mom going out and buying barbies with much more diversity, along with ones that looked more like me, and it really enhanced my enjoyment of barbie dolls as well as showing me that beauty does not have to follow an incredibly restrictive ideal

I never undestood the vitriol adults have always had towards Dolls bodies. I grew up fat and everything around me made sure i knew i was morally weak and ugly and unappealing for It, cartoons and magazines and movies and adults. Never has a Doll make me think about my weight or the fact that i wasn't blonde and pretty. I even thougt for some time that Barbie had a huge butt because She coudnt fit the pants of another slightly smaller Doll and at the time if you weren't as skinny as possible you were fat, i lerned from One of those stupid "Is Barbie giving your child anorexia?!?!?!" Articles that She was the Ideal body tipe. The narrative that a Doll could do that , not the comments of real people Is so stupid. today children even have the privilege of different body tipes in Dolls and media in general.

As a diehard Novi Stars fan, I do think we overhype them. They have nearly no articulation and the first one I bought was freaking fused at the thighs, so only her head and shoulders could move. That is not posable or player friendly. But their big alien heads and their glittery inset eyes (first time I'd ever seen them) are so gorgeous and exactly what I love (namely, aliens) and who the heck else is making dolls that look like this?? This is a great nuanced take. Doll bodies do seem to affect kids body image issues, however parents and media play a much stronger role that does not seem to be taken seriously (obviously its much easier to blame others than yourself when you're a parent).
@NoName-dx1no
@NoName-dx1no Жыл бұрын
Honestly I think it’s celebrities or families that would affect the body image more because with family well their family so their opinion about how you look or your body would tend to hold more weight, like moms skipping meals and saying they look fat in front of their kids would make kids question their looks more than an inanimate doll. And with celebrities well they’re human like you, and the media tends to have celebrities be the role model that girls should be and look like and every way, even including their alleged diets. With dolls well they’re anything the kids want to be and most kids know a doll and them can’t be compared because ones plastic and ones a living breathing human, even as a fat child the thing I wanted to emulate from Barbie was her fashion style, life especially having many great careers,the love of pink, or being a princess and mermaid. I think most moms would project onto the doll especially with moms having self image issues being so common throughout the world, being sort of jealous of the body and the fashion style forgetting that they could be like “Barbie” too if they simply just dressed how they really wanted and be confident

Thank GOD we're talking about the insane MH pricing shenanigans. Currently they have just leaned more into a slight pear shaped body. I love that body shape in my bjds but you know. Another underrated opinion: For the Disney princess/Frozen/Encanto dolls, they should've made the dolls of the tough/girl boss/fighter characters (looking at you, Luisa, Merida, Mulan, Moana, and Raya) more like action figure/doll hybrids like the DC superhero girls dolls.
@Theravingranter
@Theravingranter Жыл бұрын
I think they did that with Raya and Luisa and with Moana, they all had unique body molds. However this doesn’t make sense with Mulan and Merida as even though they are “girl bosses” they aren’t muscular. Mulan is certainly fit and has had some action figure type dolls but that really hinders the whole aspect of them being dolls. If they have molded on clothing they look plasticy and can’t move dynamically which someone like Mulan would have to. For Mulan a made-to-move body type and more casual clothing would be best instead of always representing her with her matchmaker outfit. If they do have her come with that have it have that feature where you can use water to wipe it off and have it come with her warrior and civilian clothes. Also make her hair able to be cut but it can grow long if you want it to (this is a feature they used to use in some older dolls). For Merida I would say she should stay much the same just less glitter, smaller eyes, defined freckles and always come with a bow and arrow even if it’s a budget doll. She could also benefit from more movable arms but it’s not a big thing.

An interesting insight into the BJD community; even if there are collectors with their noses up in the air, I think the fashion doll customization community has had amazing effects on the western BJD culture as a whole. I started collecting them around the 2011 2012 mark, and when I was starting out I felt there was actual stigma against doll collectors who crafted everything themselves for their BJDs, especially if they were starting out or didn't have professional skills yet. I heard the term "hillbilly dolls" thrown around a couple of times in relation to that. But that perspective was shifting already when I was fresh in the hobby, especially since Monster High doll customisation was steadily gaining traction, so I didn't really experience it much. I figured that this is a nice viewpoint to share that I don't really see discussed, not even within the BJD community. I realise I'm late to the party, but I still wanted to share it.

In defence of theMTM body, I’d stopped playing with modern dolls especially those with Model Muse bodies b/c they were just little statues. The MTM body release meant I could play Barbie again, and while I 100% get the joint thing, I just don’t see them when I am posing the doll. Every modern doll I own has a MTM makeover, I couldn’t collect modern Barbie otherwise. But also respect this isn’t what some collectors are Looking for. HAPPY 50k FOLLOWERS & 2nd B’Day!! 🤩🥳💗

I agree. The MTM bodies are a must have because I do more photography than anything. I customize my dolls and there are certain poses that truly bring my art to life. The joints do suck to look at, but you can train your brain to ignore them. If all my dolls had to stand in statue like formation, I would lose it!!

For me, poseability is a high must have. It helps me bond with my dolls more. So the poses the MTM bodies are capable of making absolutely blew my mind! I remember recently buying my first one at my thrift store not too long ago and I was shooked with the poses I pull off. The only doll that could've rivaled that was my Liv Doll and that wasn't even close. The joints didn't even bother that much honestly and I even forget they exist lol.

Dysmorphia- I played the sh- out of Bratz as a kid and I never once wanted to look like them (lmao I'm ftm). Also, MAJOR point to be made regarding dolls and body image, bringing it back to the person complaining about crossplay between lines. I had both Bratz and Barbie and they do not share clothes very well. One could argue that this made me more accepting of different body types. Some people have bigger hips like Barbie. Some people have shorter torsos like Bratz. And these people cannot share clothes and have them look good and fit right. Bringing awareness to the true toxic source- the fast fashion industry that treats every item like one size fits all- will help decrease body dysmorphia.

As a Fashion Doll collector and plus size person I understand where some people are coming from when they say dolls could cause body image issues. I don't think they *cause* those issues, but combined with other forms of media only portraying skinnier body types, it can be disheartening for plus size young kids to not see themselves represented by the dolls they like. Same thing for skin color diversity! I only hope we can get the same body diversity as we get with skin color now in some near future-- I wouldn't mind paying premium price for a doll that has a body shaped like mine.

My unpopular opinion is that even though we have more representation of ethnicities in fashion dolls, they still have a long way to go with representing disabilities. The only disabled fashion dolls on the market are Barbie fashionistas ( kinda limited in fashions and play sets), Lottie dolls (all of them look like nine year olds and most of them are white), and Frankie from mind high ( personally I love). I few like the gap in disability rep in dolls is far too steep. Plus most dolls don’t look fashionable or trendy or cute! Give us disabled dolls that still look cool! Rant over.

I literally started binging Jem last night lol. Also, I collect fashion dolls AND BJDs. Unfortunately, the obnoxious BJD fans are the very loud minority. Most collectors are pretty nice, and there's a ton of us (myself included) that are chronically ill and it's an easy hobby to find joy and companionship in. My hot take though: Smartdolls are insanely overated, overpriced, and all their face sculpts look exactly the same.

I feel bad saying this about an artist…but SAME. Bruh that’s a big anime doll I can figure that out. The only good ones I have seen are ones that’s have been highly customized by artists. Plus some of the “inclusive” lines such as mastectomy sculpt came out with was … strange. As someone who does customize dolls with medical conditions I can say it has been added as a strange add on and not as a very realized idea. I use it as a way to cope with the patients and lives of people I have seen dealing with chronic Illnesses as a healthcare provider. I don’t think you need to be in that position to do this idea and I think the idea of dolls with mastectomies and insulin pumps are great! It’s just a bit odd the way they have been implemented I suppose? I work mainly with cancer patients and while it is highly stylized something about big anime tiddy next to a perfectly tidy anime scar saying “mastectomy” feels weird when some take part of the breast, whole breast, some of the muscular tissue some have partial implants it all depends and usually require multiple jp drains post op so they have multiple scars from the procedure. These patients go through a lot and while I think a stylization shouldn’t be discouraged I don’t know. This one hit me weird 😅. TLDR; dunno why not a fan of the smart dolls. They hit me weird.

BJD collector here! Yeah, a few people in the hobby are absolutely terrible, especially on a certain Tumblr blog. Like I'm sculpting a bjd but I'm scared to post it on Instagram because I don't want to deal with the negatively and bullying. Regarding the completionism comment, I definitely think when collecting is your hobby it is important to be extremely mindful about what you are consuming for both your mental and financial health (and that's not even touching on environmental and consumeristic impacts or ethics). I also have observed the comments where people seem miserable trying to be completionists with their collection, and that reminds me of the clinical definition of addiction, where its a compulsion and you're no longer doing it for the enjoyment. I get sad for them but also a little frustrated, I think there's a stereotype of a collector as exhibiting this behavior and I don't like exemplifying it for the trolls to latch on to. And to not point fingers, I for sure for myself, while not strict a completionist or anything, don't go out and buy every doll I like. It would be financially irresponsible, it would take up too much space, and I would probably start to feel bad and guilty and the fun would go out of it. And I definitely can get obsessive just searching for dolls on the used market, and that alone as made me feel weird and anxious so I dial back on that. All in all, just be thoughtful, responsible collector. And frankly, impulse shopping is something the whole world should be more self reflective about no matter what the item is.

Watching your video as I write this- the only issue I would have in "playing" with different doll lines (like RH and Barbie) is that I find the bigger heads means they are harder to lean or balance. As a kid, Barbie was married to G.I. Joe and their kids were some kiddles and the Sunshine family lived next door and visited often. I don't think kids care. I haven't purchased a pink Laguna doll, I like the pink one better but there is a certain charm the 1st wave dolls have. But I would get her if I had a chance to, I just haven't bought ANY of the new MH dolls. BJD? They are nice, but my preference is for dolls that aren't so..fragile. I feel like dolls are meant to be played with and BJD dolls seem like they are more for display only. EAH- I don't collect them and came late to the game with these. I think they're quite lovely though. Bratz- they're cool except for their shoes/feet. Lose Barbie's shoe and she goes barefoot. Lose a Bratz shoe and she had an amputation. MTM bodies- yay they pose, boo they look ugly and are often a different color or fade to a different color. And the ankle joint makes their feet unstable. Boy dolls- not into any of them. Ken is NOT essential for Barbie to have a great adventure. I have a few boy dolls, but unless he's crossdressing, he's not much fun. Lol

I used to play with Barbie’s and Bratz dolls with my sister when I was a kid, I definitely don’t collect and don’t have much of an interest in dolls as an adult other than a passing one. I love to look at old dolls and really love the holiday or like the millennium Barbie’s, my mom had some of those when I was a kid and I loved just looking at them in the box. I also LOVE Bratz dolls due to nostalgia as I have so many amazing memories of playing with them with my sister, but I digress! Anyway, even though I’m not a collector I just wanted to say I absolutely adore your channel and the content you create. It’s so nice to learn about the community from the outside looking in, and also about the history of Barbie and other dolls in your other videos. Your content is just so relaxing and I guess wholesome? I don’t feel like that’s the right word, but the way you articulate yourself and speak about your opinions is great because you are firm in how you feel but not over the top, loud, or judgmental about anything. I know I’m gonna get something well informed when I put on a video! Idk if you’ve talked about it before or are comfortable, but you’ve mentioned a lot your mom buying you Barbie’s as a kid, I would be interested to know your experience of growing up as a “boy” that liked Barbie’s. Was your mom reluctant in buying them for you? Did she not care? How parents handle this is always an interesting topic for me! I would love to know more if you’d ever like to do a video about it!

Congratulations on 50k. I don’t collect dolls, and I don’t know anything about this interest, but your videos are so well done that I find myself watching them all anyway and learning about other people’s interests in a way that is very engaging. I’m sure your channel will keep growing.

Pollyworld is probably the best Polly Pocket movie (then again it's the only one I've ever seen, but I just have a feeling it's one of the best). I've always loved roller coasters and I've always wanted to go to Pollyworld. Those roller coasters look so fun!

While I do love Gen1 of Monster High. I don't think they are as incredible as people remember. Collectors now talk like Gen1 had Rainbow High level quality when in reality they have always used thinner material with lots of printed on details. For the dolls, it works, but I don't think Gen3 was this "huge drop in quality" people said it was when they first released

Ye! Though I will forever treasure my Booriginal Creeproduction Draculaura. PLEASE let the rumors be true and School's Out be next.

@S.P.D. Magenta Ranger Honestly, I thought the creeproductions were better than the originals. It took me awhile to get into Monster High because I always felt their eyes were off. Cleo and Clawdeen, especially, had really bad eye wonk. I felt the creeproductions made the ghouls all look so beautiful. Tbh, I thought they'd stay in stock longer and missed out on all of them. Oh well, hope we get more soon. I took would like School's Out creeproductions

Congrats on your youtube success as well - you're hands down my favorite doll channel. I've said this before, but I tended to never click with dolltube as most of them are very 'spill the tea' or haul type videos and neither of those things are things I really like. I think it's great the variety, thoughtfulness, and relatability you have given us, so thanks for all you do.

8:35 tbh I haven't had a single positive experience with the BJD community, and even though I own some BJDs myself I just rather mingle with people from the fashion doll community who are way more chill

Your channel has become one of my favorite channels in KZbin. You seem like such a nice and sweet person, your research is well done and you have a funny and interesting way of talking about the topics in the videos. You definitely make me want to watch the videos as soon as I noticed you have posted. I wish you even more success for the future! :)

The ending of your video was so sweet-even if I am a minor toy collector and only have a few fashion dolls, I love your videos. I admit sometimes they even help me calm down and have a peaceful nap, though I usually watch them more actively, haha. One thing I appreciate about you is the sweet and sincere way you end every video with thank you. Just the tone of it puts a smile on my face, like I can sense your sincerity. I’m pleased that your channel has helped you have an outlet to speak your mind and share your passion!

I just wanted to drop in and say that I hadn't bought or even thought much about fashion dolls since I was a child obsessed with Barbie movies in the mid-2000s, but that changed when KZbin's algorithm introduced me to your channel. Your videos feel like a comprehensive glimpse into a world that that I would never have explored otherwise. Glad you hit 50k
