I found this for you. With alpaca birthing, the alpaca’s gestation period averages 11.5 months, but may vary from 11 to 12 months. Any cria born earlier could well need extra help. We tend to bring our heavily pregnant females close to our house for regular observation six weeks before the 11.5 month due date. Alpacas are generally born between 7am and 3pm and if born later, it is important to make sure the cria is dry before nightfall (and bring it - and mum - into a shelter, if necessary). The vast majority of crias are born, get up, and feed on their own - without any assistance. However as their mothers do not dry them off at all, we suggest you dry the cria with a clean towel, especially if it is cold or wet (shelter may be necessary - especially early in the year - and you may need to consider fitting a cria coat). If the cria has any blood on it, it should be cleaned off. Check that the cria’s airways (nose and mouth) are clear. We dip the umbilical cord with Iodine (10% Iodine) to prevent infection and repel flies. It is important not to forget mum - check for any blood on her legs/ tail - and wash off, again so as not too attract flies. Mum should pass the afterbirth in the couple of hours following the birth, and it should be removed and disposed of. The mother’s milk does not tend to flow until the afterbirth has been passed so it is very important to make sure this has occured. Call the vet if after 4 - 6 hours this has not happened. www.springfarmalpacas.co.uk/birthing/

The gestation period is, on an average, 11.5 months, Females are induced ovulators; the act of mating and the presence of semen causes them to ovulate. Females usually conceive after just one breeding, but occasionally do have trouble conceiving. It is not advisable to allow a young female to be bred until she is mature and has reached two-thirds of her mature weight. They do not come into heat, but have a cycle of a different sort--hormones in the female alpaca stimulate both follicles within the ovary--The mature follicle forms a corpus luteum or CL that can be seen in an ultrasound and its size can indicate the readiness of the female to become pregnant. Do the research and try not to make assumptions. Lots of good info on breeding alpacas on the internet.

@@dianefiorella7493 Yes, and no. Right now, they seem super focused on Dolly and why there is no baby, yet. But, it is also apparent that they really need to do some more research about them. If I, who have not been around nor likely even ever to have alpacas remembered that their gestation is 11-12 months, they could have looked it up. (When they first got them, I wondered what the difference between a llama and alpaca and a vicuna was, other than an alpaca is smaller.) But, I really am suspicious that they're doing this for views. Rufus might be interested in dolly if she’s close to the end of her pregnancy because they put off a smell very similar to being in heat. (That’s how it is in goats) so that’s why they say not to put a male around at the end of their pregnancy because it can cause them to birth prematurely with them trying to breed. And they can sometimes not get a udder/milk until the day they birth.

So I breed and raise llamas- very similar reproductive wise to alpacas. They usually do not produce an "udder" per say- they have a very small bag that develops between a week or merely days before birthing. A key is to look at the ligaments surrounding her tail, as soon as she appears "sunken in" or starts to go to the poop pile more, you're getting close. Gestation in my experience is usually 360-375 days..

Hey guys, just a heads up. Gestation for a donkey is 11- 13 months...typically more along the 11 month range....so you may end up with a winter baby if you let them breed now.

Now brush their teeth. My horse got two cavities from eating mini cand bars and cookies.

Alpaca gestation is 11-12 months from what I read. Around 345 days, maybe give her another 2wks to a month. Watch for signs with her eating decreasing, more and more time away from the others, enlarged teets. If she was pg and lost it, she should be showing signs of infection. Perhaps she has just gained weight or rufus is shooting blanks.

Females can resorb a fetus, and not get infected... they just are pg, then they aren't...

IF it was just one cookie, ok. But I suspect Houston is poisoning them with more than 1 cookie. Please teach Houston that chocolate is poison for animals!
