It seems that not a week or two goes by without someone stumbling on to these videos and a comment is posted about how special this place was to so very many people. Obviously I loved this place and it changed my life the two short years I spent here as an Air Force brat. I had to go back some 40 years later to get some closure. Tough to see it abandoned but you realize it was all about the people spent in this little paradise. Thanks for all the comments and keep 'em coming.

@yankeemt100 (Manuel) this is Tyrone. I think we grew up playing ball together in Darmstadt. Yes, we always had great talent in Darmstadt and would be in the running to win or just win the championship like you said. I was their from 1986-1991 during my fathers 20 years of service in the US ARMY. I loved Darmstadt and was sorry to hear it close down. Facebook is a great to reconnect with fellow Darmstadters. Thank you to all of our soldiers who have served and continue to serve!

Thanks for posting this, brings back lots of memories. We lived in 414 (they only had 3 numbers then) from 1961 to 1964 and I went to Kindergarten thru 2nd grade there. Have to say my best memories as a kid were living here, exploring the woods, hiking up the hill every Saturday to go to the movies, spending money at the candy kiosk on Heidelberg Strasse, catching June bugs in tthe fall and playing in the snow. I went back for a quick day trip in 1987 and took a few photos, couldn't believe how those giant apartment buildings looked just a bit smaller. I still remember the creepy empty playrooms in the top floor. I know my brothers and sisters agree this was absolutely the best place to live as a kid.

I am in awe of this video! My dad was in the Air Force, and our family, comprised of me, my two sisters, and our parents, lived in Darmstadt in Lincoln Village from 1965 to 1967, when our dad died of a ruptured brain aneurysm. My sister is planning a trip to Germany in the next year, a gift from her son, and she plans on revisiting Darmstadt while there. This has sparked research, but I never thought I would see these sights from my childhood!!! We lived in the building beside the AYA for a very short time when we first arrived in Darmstadt, but we then moved into the building by the entrance, the first building shown in this video. What precious sights, waking precious memories! Thanks so much for sharing! When I got married years, my husband joined the Army, and we lived in Augsburg from 1975 to 1977.

I was a transfer from Mannheim to Ernst Ludwig Kasern in Jan '74. We used to cut across town and the tracks you spoke of, to get to the then called "Rainbow Club". It was then the NCO-EM club in Lincoln Village. Loved that area, but spent most of my time TDY away as I surveyed for the 94th Engr Bn (Construction) in those days. Good memories but sad to see all the "spirit" gone out of the place! Thanx for posting your video! ;)

It looks like Lincoln Village my now be occupied based on the comment below of a college student now living there. I wished it would have been occupied when I shot the video as I really wanted to walk around the village and reminisce about my time there in 1970-72. So many of the posts I've received from people who lived there describe the same sort of appreciation for the magical experience of their time in Darmstadt and Lincoln Village. Almost certain this is the military off-base housing where we lived in the 1960s. Bordered by a coal plant, Oktoberfest field, and train tracks (?). Looks familiar yet uncanny, as Freud would say, "unheimlich." I miss the Brötchen Mann and the Limonade Truck.
