I've been pretty happy with my Godin Session HSS. I have a few Godin HSH guitars as well, and I kinda turn them into HSS in a way. I remove the slug pole pieces from the neck humbucker, and leave the screw pieces. That way I can still adjust the screws for better string balance, and it sounds closer to a single coil, but a bit fatter/darker, and quieter still, and still has decent output and compression. Personally I'd like them all the pickups to be hum canceling, but I like the single in the middle looks wise over 3 buckers, and I like the tone of a single coil in the middle for the in between positions, and I happen to really like the tone of a middle single coil. I also made a no load pot for a blend knob so when I'm on the bridge or bridge/middle, I can blend the neck. If I'm on the neck or neck and middle, then I can add the bridge. And I can take the blend out of the circuit too. Smaller value cap on the tone control so it acts almost like a mid boost when rolled down (due to the resonant peak shift) and a treble bleed on the volume so it still sounds nice rolled down and cleans up better(for my taste anyway). It's the most versatile setup I've come across, with minimal/passive mods that pretty much anyone can do.

Four years after shipping only 100 to the USA (in 2016), Yamaha are now sending more 612VIIs over. I happen to know GC has 14 of them on the way this month, and one of them has my name on it! Looking forward to a Yamaha 612vii in black, with all the essential upgrades, including three Seymour Duncan pickups (SSL-1, SSL-1, and a Custom 5 humbucker in the bridge that's splittable), Grover locking tuners, Graph Tech Black TUSQ nut, Wilkinson trem... I can't wait to hold that baby in my hands and plug it in! GC screwed up an earlier order of mine, so they knocked a hundo off the sticker price, down from $650 to $550, plus tax. I bet you it would hold its ground against the Schecter and Fenders (non-Custom Shop).

My best HSS is a Strat Elite with Burstbucker 3 pickup 4 wire that splits. S1 switching that does 5 additional tones + the coil splitting Humbucker and a blow push/push button. That's 14 basic pickup selections but I really only use 7. It's white with white pearl pickup guard, maple neck. It needed a fret end dressing 2 times before it finally stabilized. Now it plays great but it was one of the worst fret sprouting I had out of 40 guitars. A couple of charvels were even worse. Yamaha Pacifica PAC612 run $650 and are very nice. I have the 611 with trem and a P90 pleked and set up by Sweetwater and plays perfect. I never needed to address any fret sprouting on the Yamaha 611. I sanded the back of the neck on the pacifica to take some of the lacquer off and I like it even more.

OH I almost overlooked my moded Fender parallel universe tele HSS with a Thornbucker, kept the middle pickup that's a tele bridge pickup, and put a P-90 in the neck. special control plate that splits the humbucker and a toggle switch to add in the neck in any position. 5 way switch. No load tone pots and 500K all pots. I just roll back tone and volume when wanting a more 250K tone. I put med jumbo SS frets so I had to put on a new nut and longer saddle bolts to get them high enough. Custom pickguard. This one just needed a touch up on the fret ends. Very cool and unique tones. It was a lot to finally have my luthier finish. I had to take it back 4 times before it was all done.

Until yesterday (8-7-21) the only hss strat I had was a Squier Affinity, and it was surprising pretty good. I've been looking for an upgrade, playing guitars ranging in price from $600-$2500. And what did I buy? The Schecter Nick Johnston hss in atomic coral. FANTASTIC guitar! It outplayed almost every other guitar I played, with the exception of one, and at ONE QUARTER the price, it was a no brainer. Plus, I always wanted a pink guitar. Thanks for the review, D!

I live in Thailand and i bought a Paramount Strat HSS. It cost around $200 US. It's a functional guitar that fits my functional playing. Sounds ok, plays nice, overall an ok value. I don't know where it's made.

Great video as always. However, the pacifica actually goes up to around 700 bucks for the high end version with seymour duncans, wilkinson trem and grover lockers. Would love to see a review of that one.

I have a Godin Progression Plus, made in Canada - HSS - mini-Seymour Duncan humbucker. Also has Godin's active voicing button (they call it HDR) so you can switch from passive to active to get more bite - on any of the five switch settings. Beautiful workmanship, nice flat neck (I think it's 12" radius) . Awesome guitar. Under $1,000 Canadian .

I'd consider the Yamaha the most OG out of the 4. My pick goes to it.

The Kramer Focus VT-211S is only $129.00 and it's actually not bad at all. It even has a treble bleed circuit. Cool video man, I stopped by to check out the Nick Johnston signature. I've been scoping that one out for a while now but it's never in stock where I buy my guitars.

Darrell, I noticed something during your tones showcase: Some of the single coil positions sounded brighter than others, but I noticed some fret buzz along with the additional brightness. Since starting to set up and work on my own guitars, I've noticed that the setup really influences the eventual tone. I wonder if the additional brightness of those guitars would fade if the action was raised or the relief increased. Such small adjustments would not affect the feel of the guitars very much -- probably not enough to feel. I'd like to know some of those details, but I understand that this sort of thing is too "techy" to do a vid on, and I'm only mildly curious at most. Just sayin'!😎❤️️🎸‼️

Overall Sound: Fender - Yamaha - Schecter - Vola Looks: Schecter - Vola - Fender - Yamaha I’m still sold on the Sterling Cutlas though. Seems to have it all, and just looks so darn handsome. Unfortunately, I’m not alone. The model I’m jones’n for is still outa stock.

The Fender crushed it in all positions. Not a fair fight. Amazing that the Pacifica sounded so good.

My hss guitar used to be a Washburn superstrat, but after nearly 30 years of gigging etcetera . I Only Have one back plate of the original guitar. What it is now is completely custom made due to accidents and wear and tear. I had the headstock break behind the nut first, then a new neck made, about 10 years ago the body cracked at the vibrato post holes so it has a new body. Replacement tuners vibrato, pickups wiring etcetera.

David Freeman Cute. The parent company is irrelevant, Fender was smart in not sticking their nose with the build of Charvel. As they say, “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it”.

I have had my Yamaha Pacifica (violin sunburst - looks INCREDIBLE) for a few months. As an entry level electric player, I have absolutely LOVED how playable it is, how it feels to hold, and, of course, how it sounds!! Thank you for another absolutely AMAZING video!

Nice review! In addition to a Fender stratocaster (USA) that I actually bought on the pure sound I now have an extra HSS "Strat". A Sire S7. Which has a, to an amplified extent, a similar sound. But some aspects that I found on that much cheaper guitar that I don't have on my Fender. It's a fine guitar, I suspect, fitting into this type of reviews.

It's seems to me that Fender is far above the others concerning the sound, except maybe for the humbucker. The Pacifica sounds great for a low budget guitar. The Schecter is well made but the sound of the single coils is too narrow, too shy... The Vola ? Too expensive for the very poor sound of the single coils, without any deepness,IMOO. Great video anyway, always very interesting. Hi from France, Darrel !

I bought Yamaha Pacifica 112VMX, then i replace the stock pickups with Dimarzio Vintage Heavy Blues II (neck), Dimarzio are 67 (middle) and Dimarzio AT1 (bridge), the result is amazing and what's even better is the fact that the guitar itself plus all the 3 Dimarzio pickups in total still cheaper than Fender made in mexico Strat, at least in my country

The HSS I have is the only guitar I own and it's a Squier Bullet Strat and I absolutely love it. To some people this might seem surprising and I'm aware of all the shortcoming the guitar has but I love it because to buy the guitar I had saved up for months and also worked a job and when I saved up enough money to buy the guitar and a Vox pathfinder 10 along with it I just went straight to a guitar store and bought it and I love it. P.s - Thanks for all the great and informative videos you make you're awesome.
