It will take your hand and lead you through ambient valleys of beautiful clean tone... then with the flip of a switch it will take your hand, rip off your arm and beat you over the head with it."

I also have a JVM 410H and a Marshall DSL100H as well. One of the best bang for the buck Marshall amp tones for the money. I’ve owned a lot of mesa boogies over the years. Marshall seems to have a low mid range that not a lot of other amps have that make it sound full even with the bass and treble down. It just cuts through the mix very well and fits in the EQ spectrum with other instruments very very well. Thanks for the great videos! To get the best tone out of the amp is if you turn the channel volumes 3/4 of the way up and turn the masters down you get rid of some of the fizzy tone. FYI

When I had the choice between the DSL100HR and the DSL40CR, I went for the 40W 1x12 combo because I grabbed one from another customer who wanted to trade it in for a smaller one. It came with new TAD EL34 and a different speaker (a NeoCreamback, that really sounds nice). I use the amp with two Blackstar 4x8" Minis instead, thats nice. One very important thing to mention about the connectivity: The Amp offers 4-16 Ohms connectors, easily handels 1x16, 2x16, 1x8, 2x8, 1x4 or whatever combination you're up to! When I picked up mine I didn't notice any tonal or dynamic difference between the 100W head and the 40W Combo as both are far to powerful to be used beyond 11 o'clock in any closed environment. The sounds are great, the (digital) reverb is very restrained, but useful. Get the big foot-switch to have a 4-CH Amp and don't care to much about the tone shift, you'll never be able to switch it on stage. The only thing I am missing is the smooth JCM900 Ultra-Gain sound. As Darrell is a bit to young for the old marshals, I'll add a few comments. The fist (two) channel(s) without tone shift sound like a JCM800 (low/High) for everything between Pink Floyd, the Stones and AC/DC, with tone shift and higher gain (probably a booster for most guitars), you'll get up to Slashs AfD Sound. Without tone shift on 1st level of the 2nd channel you'll have the classic 80 UK metal sound (Saxon, Maiden,...) with tone shift, you won't get american tone, but it'll become more modern. In the High-Gain area, 2nd half, 2nd level of the 2nd channel, you'll get all the modded JCM900 hotrodded Plexi you ever imagined, but you clearly stay on the iconic Marshall sound until you do the unthinkable: touch both the tone shift and the tone controls to increase base and treble and reduce the mids, get out most presence bring up the resonance and here you go: "international sound". Boost as desired, but be aware of the sheer endless headroom the amp offers - use the lower power setting or a power soak. Don't wonder if it doesn't compress and go to overdrive that easily. The power section has more headroom than the one in the JCM800. But it doesn't need the power amp to do the work. It sounds great even with the masters somewhere around 9-11 o'clock.

Swapped the stock JJ EL34 tubes for JJ KT77 tubes, the preamp tubes for TungSol RI 12AX7's, the phase inverter for a Sovtek 12AX7LPS (long plate) and it made the amp even fatter sounding with a much better breakup. I also bought the optional Marshall pedl-91016 six button footswitch, which turns the amp into a true 4 channel amp. I also purchased a Victory V4 Kraken all tube preamp (has 4 preamp tubes) and added it to the Marshall using the four cable method and now it's a 6 channel amp with everything from vintage to ultra-modern high gain Metal (like a Peavey 6505 +), and everything in between. It has now become the best sounding and most versatile set up I've owned in the last 35 years and all total for the amp itself, the Kraken preamp, six button footswitch and all the tubes, it cost me about $1500 dollars. PS - the DSL100HR actually has chassis mounted tube sockets, which you usually only see on amps that cost thousands of dollars, while most budget amps have the tube sockets mounted directly to the PCB.

Something about amps with output switches I've never heard people mention is the difference in tone. For instance, with my DSL the 50w setting is not just lower output but also much warmer. If I leave all the settings the same and flip it to 100w the tone is instantly brighter and punchier. It's the same with my Hughes & Kettner, Peavey and any amps I've tried in stores. The manufacturers don't mention it, acting like the switch just alters volume, but there's a distinctive difference.

I’ve played through Marshalls for over fifty years. There is no other amp that even comes close. I have two JCM 900 2500 MkIII 50 watt heads, atop two stacks of JCM 800 4x12 cabinets. As great as those two stacks sound, the Holy Grail of rock guitar tones emanates from my 1968 Super Tremolo 100w Plexi head, atop a 1968 1960a model slant cab, and a 1970 1960b model straight cab, all loaded with greenback Celestions. When I fire that baby up with my 1969 Les Paul Custom Black Beauty, the tone is god-like. Before you ask how can I achieve said tone at a decibel level that doesn’t level my house, I also use a Fryette Power Station 100 as an attenuator. Otherwise, my house would not be still standing…😎🤘🔥💥

100 watts of Marshall Power is what I’ve been playing for Years and years. I do absolutely love Hiwatt amps for that “pink” thing they do so well and Fender makes great (and very heavy) combos - and this is coming from a guy that plays Bass on tour professionally also, meaning getting my Hartke 3500 big rig around the world too.... but when I’m playing Strats, LPs, E335s, TStyles, and even my Majesty ( sorry Ibanezers - I just can’t deal with those necks... and it seems redundant to get a $3G PRS with all these other instruments in my studio ) but seriously... Marshall IS Metal and it does all the Rock n Roll I ever want or need!!! Dwarfing other Heads? Yep that sounds about right. Cheers.

I have the DSL40 1x12 combo, threw a Celestion Vintage 30 in it and also run it into a 1x12 extension cabinet with a V30, so it's running as a 2x12. It's a great amp! I usually run it on the 1/2 power setting and it's still insanely loud!

I got into Marshall just this year with the DSL1 head + cab and it's amazing for recording and playing. Don't be fooled by the wattage, that baby can get the walls moving. And it sounds great too, and fro that price, I mean, it's a steal. Also, I got into it for the high gain stuff that my Blues Junior can't do but I fell in love with those crispy cleans, coupled with a Strat it's pure joy

Greetings Darrell! First off, great video review of an affordable all tube Marshall amplifier. I thought it would be useful to you and your viewers to know that you can make some minor modifications to the sound of these amplifiers simply by swapping out the tube set. Since genuine Marshall tubes are difficult to find here in the U.S.A. I have found that there are some other brands of tubes available that work with Marshall amps, and that each of those different brands of tubes can enable you to get a modified sound out of the amplifier, Tung Sol tubes, for instance tend to scoop the midrange frequencies and add a little extra grit, while some other tubes will be closer to the original sound of the amp like the JJ tubes, Mesa Boogie tubes may offer you another option as well, however, there are not a lot tube manufacturers in the world and most tubes available are all made in the few factories that do so, particular brands have specific requirements to meet their satisfaction and are labeled and packaged for the retail market. Most tube amplifiers require replacement of the tubes periodically to produce the best results, and depending on how many hours of use and the operating conditions, replacement times will vary. All tube amplifiers are capable of being modified by using a different set of tubes, I like to have a backup set of my favorite tubes for a particular amplifier handy and I also like to have a set of stock tubes as well. Thank you for posting this video! Please have an excellent and awesome day! 😎

@@bradlivey7867 I don't think you are talking about tube guitar amps. Yes, there are 1000W class D bass amps but that's something completely different.
@cmdrsocks3 жыл бұрын
@@error8418 The problem with them is that the amp might be rated at 1000W, but if it only has a 100W power supply, guess how many Watts are coming out. Marshall, Fender, Vox, Mesa, etc are rated along the lines of "you'll get at least that much"

I had an early 90s JCM900, and loved the tone. Had to sell it, but recently I had to pick up a DSL20, and it was what I’ve been missing. Definitely different dialing in a Mesa amp than dialing in a Marshall. And you’re the first person I’ve heard say that they like the tone shift’s effect - but as you’re a Mesa guy, this doesn’t really surprise me, as it does give more of a modern, Mesa-esque vibe. Great video - I chose my DSL20 because of this amp’s tones; definitely check it out if you’re looking for a lighter weight option!

My advice to all watchers is:just don't get old! Hah! My 70ish ears could not hear the difference with the Tone Shift button. The way he kept hitting it I thought "He's gonna knock this feature", but no, he liked it. Welcome to the world of taking what you can hear and learning to love melody over tone :-|

Yeah too much loud hard rock for me in the 60’s. I couldn’t hear any change what so ever with the tone shift.
@flamencoprof3 жыл бұрын
@@yqwgjsg Don't blame the Rock necessarily. My Mother, Father and Grandfather all had loss at age. However, my Grandfather ran a Big Band, and they all loved music, so I dunno. It's hard to tell because when I was young and bought Led Zep LPs, it was the louder the better, and I noticed how quiet my old car sounded on the way home from stadium shows like Led Zep and such.

The reason for this is because his mid volume was all the way down, if you turn the mid up to 5 you can definitely hear a difference, I’ve always had my mids at least halfway with my Marshall’s
