As a guitar player, chances are you want a Marshall amplifier at some point. Problem is, some of Marshall's current offerings you simply shouldn't buy. Here are 3 Marshall you shouldn't buy and 3 alternative guitar amps you could buy instead.

Well, yeah. Thats generally what will happen when a company sells out to crappy new owners who cut corners and worsen products... Would-be customers will look to other companies who can still make high quality version of the products they want. Only boomers would make a brand their personality to the point that they'll blindly stick with them after a buyout by crappy new owners, which produces inferior products from a team that Includes none of the talent or expertise that had nothing to do with the product he enjoyed in the first place. It's just dumb. Marshall is now owned by a headphone company, and the staff running it now came from sports clothing and footwear compoanies. no joke. They've repeatedly shown that the know nothing about guitars, and the old marshall design and tech team are looong gone since the buyout. Marshalls after from the last few years are mostly cheap chinese made crap, and are becoming prone to dveloping faults, because they're just not well made. Why else do you think they're losing their endorsees? After 40 years of endorsements, Slash jumped ship to magnatone. SLASH FFS... Jim Marshall will be spinning in his grave.

I have had a DSl 40CR since mid 2019 and I love it . 5 years and zero issues or complaints other than not liking the stock V type speaker which didn't matter because I bought specifically to run though extension cabs because it's doesn't come as a head but eventually I heard the DSL 40C which had a creamback M65 in it and was blown away so I ordered one and put it in my 40CR and was extremely impressed with how much bettet it sounded . I don't normally like open back combos on their own but with the Creamback M I actually use the combo on its own quite frequently. I still prefer it with a closed back 1 by 12 or 2 by 12 but using the 40CR on its own for a different flavor is a nice option to have. The classic Gain Channel cranked in crunch mode does a very usable classic Marhsall open back combo tone

Marshalls were not meant to be played at bedroom levels to begin with, gerting a marshall to play at home you have to buy a good attenuator, that is the price you have to pay to get a plexi sounds at bedroom levels, the new 20w amps says it all in the name "studio" vintage. my sv20 sounds glorious at home with my rivera rock crusher attenuator, i dont feel the need to own another amp.

That may be true for vintage Marshall's but there are modern Marshall's that sound great for bedroom playing . Anything 50 watts or Lower can sound great at home if they have a decent master volume. The DSls also have power scaling so they can work for bedroom playing. I use a DSL 40CR ran through a 2 by 12 in my bedroom/living room/Kitchen and can get very nice saturated tones . The right tool for the right job used in the right way can solve almost all these issues

I think home/bedroom players who love tube amps and are in the know, have an attenuator. The whole “too loud for home use” thing is really not a thing once you get one. Which again, tube lovers already probably have. I love the studio line from Marshall. I own all 4 and keep the power tubes saturated and the volume down. Life’s good.

Exactly. Any home player with even the most basic tube amp knowledge base is either going to buy an attenuator or they will buy a tube amp more suitable for home use . If you buy an NMV single channel vintage/plexi type amp you will get an attenuator or you will buy a dual channel Lower wattage master volume amp . I have no issues using my DSL 40 CR at home without an attenuator. Between the master volumes and the lower wattage settings i have no issues and the tone is great although I do plan on getting an attenuator soon because i want to add a Marshall 1987 to the lineup .

Did you ever think about purchasing an attenuator I can see it’s been mentioned in the comments quite a bit also there’s a few cap changes you can make on any of these studio models. I happened on all four of them currently and honestly, I’ve enjoyed all four of them and I get as good as sounds as what you recorded there at the beginning maybe after 37 years of playing guitar and teaching lessons and a number of years of getting to the point where I could teach the lessons learning myself as learning has been a lifelong experience. I truly am blown away by your comments number one I’ve already mentioned the attenuator but number two to get on here and tell people that amplifiers are no good and that they’re going to be dissatisfied who died and made you king i’m not disagreeing with all of your opinions, but truly, why don’t you give people answers and solutions instead of problems and truly again, I would love to know what besides this KZbin channel and a few guitar licks qualifies you to tell anybody anything you’re no man and you’re not helping anybody you’re tearing people down on channels that I listen to and the people I know listen to they want positive good information. They don’t want somebody being negative spoken and rude and that’s about all you’ve done so far and not impressed me at all. You’re the not Marshall not Friedman and if you’d ever used the jubilee with the master volume, you don’t even have to use an attenuator to get Bedroom tones with high gain sounds truly man I wonder how much you really have used these amplifiers or any of the other modern convenience is known to guitar players today or for the last 20 years power soaks have been around for much longer than that even really man truly.

I've had the pleasure of owning of these Marshall amps: the DSL1HR, Origin20H, Origin20H (modded to JCM800 style), SV20H, and 2525H. The 2525H is the one that I kept and here's my thoughts: If you're looking to play the SV20 at bedroom volumes through a guitar cabinet, consider grabbing yourself an attenuator. You can find some for as low as 70 euros, or you could invest in a more premium option like the Rivera Rockcrusher, Toneking Iron Man, or Fryette Powerstation. Alternatively, if you're okay with playing through studio monitors, the Two Notes Captor could be a solid option for around 250 euros. The Captor X might be a good upgrade because it has more attenuation levels, but it might not have enough attenuation to tame the SV20 to bedroom volumes. For pristine effects, consider adding them in your DAW using plugins. However, it's worth noting that having effects in front of the amp played a crucial role in creating those legendary tones of the early Marshall players. For example in achieving a tone simmilar to EVH's , using an Echoplex, Script Phase 90 and MXR Flanger in front of the amp could have a more significant impact than using the exact same amp he had. Personally, I own the 2525H along with a matching JVM 212C. I can attest that the Jubilee can be quite picky when it comes to speaker choice. It didn't sound great with the stock G12 Heritage speaker; in fact, that combo brought out the worst in the Jubilee. However, after switching to a Vintage 30 and a G12M-65 Creamback speaker combination, it sounds perfect. I've also experimented with a lot of IRs, but I keep coming back to this speaker setup. As for the DSL1HR, I ended up parting ways with it because the clean channel lacked serious headroom, which was a deal-breaker for me after selling my Fender amp. In general, I'd recommend skipping the DSL and Origin series and opting for one of the classics instead.

I'm running mine into a Two Notes Torpedo, that's -20dB.. still too loud :') I use it as a full on load box, run into my HX Stomp, and then to a solid state power amp (similar to Seymour Duncan Powerstage) that pushes a 2x12 V30 cab - now THAT's great. No idea why they gave the combos 10 inch speakers.. they are waaaay too mid focused. Also added a rotary switch to choose input cap value, can only recommend! Cheap, simple, awesome mod.
@scoobydoo936

I bought the SV20h and cab and its true its incredibly loud for 20 Watts. I also got me, or better my wife :-) a Tone King mini attenuator (max.30W and the only attenuator that i know of beside Freyettes that doesn't impact the sound) and its glorious. Lower the Volume on you guitar knob and it beautifully cleans up without losing much of loudness or sounding thin. If you want to get into heavier territory hit it with an OD-3 (Vol max, Drive at 1-2) and you get that juicy hard rock Marshall sound. I don't know if i will keep it forever, because I'm more a Fender Blackface guy but I'm having a hell lot of fun with that thing right now. I've also spent tons of money on modelers, plugins and profilers and was always disappointed but also always wanted to have a real Plexi. However, its out of the question, it just doesn't make any sense to me to own something more powerful than 30 Watt these days and that SV20 thing comes darn close imo.

I happen to love them I got a dsl20cr and for the money well at least a couple years ago they were the best bang for your buck Tube amp you could buy for around 500 dollars but now I think they are closer to 800 dollars and I think once you get to 800 dollars you start to really open up your options and or you could probably stretch the budget another couple hundred dollars and then you really start to open up your options for new and used tube amps, but for a couple years the 20 watt dsl was the best poor boy Marshall ever in my opinion. Oh and yeah 20 watts even at half power is really not practical for home use, just ask my neighbors. You can also approximate some 800 tones on the classic gain channel dimed and boosted it almost it’s kinda like the ultra gain channel but way more open and far less compressed with the classic channel cranked and boosted but it’s a useful sound , no it’s not an 800, but I used to play a 50 watt 800 OG from the 80s and the dsl is more practical for most people I think. I still want an 800 , a plexi and a Jubilee . The 20 watt Marshalls use big glass compared to other manufacturers and that makes a difference, my dsl20 made my rectoverb 25 sound like a toy in comparison and I found myself only playing the Marshall unless I put a chorus in front and played them both at the same time, now that was glorious I tell you !

I’ve just gone back to using my 2555SL head and 4x12BV after a couple of years trying to gig with a 2525C. I just couldn’t get a great sound out of it, compared to what I was used to anyway. I had comments from the audience too, that my sound wasn’t as good as it used to be and so that’s what broke the camels back in the end. I’ll still use the combo at rehearsal now and again for easiness but I’m done with it for gigs. Regarding paring it up with the right cabinet, you’re spot on and I can definitely tell the difference between running my 2555SL through a bottom BV, which sounds superb, compared to an angled AV with doesn’t sound as good. I guess my back will just have to suffer. 😂 Great video though!

I hated my mini Jubilee combo untill i ran it through some 2 by 12s then it sounded like a Jubilee should . The G12M greenback is a poor choice for an open back combo or semi open back combo especially in a small combo . Greenbacks are already a very nasal and honky mid heavy speaker and that gets exaggerated in an open back situation especially if the combo or cab is open back . Greenbacks excel at closed back applications and are at their best in a closed 4 by 12. The Jubilee incuding the mini do much better with heavy Magnet speakers like the G12H30 anniversary G12H30 heritage 55 Hz and the G12H75 Creamback but my favorite is the Marshall G12 vintage . I have a Jubilee 2 by 12 cab with those speakers and its a proper Jubilee sound .

Hi! I must absolutely disagree with you about the SV20H because: 1. when you buy any plexi style non master volume amp you must buy a power attenuator anyway to play it at home. So saying the SV20H is too loud makes no sense at all. 2. If there is a reason to not buy an SV20H then it’s because it’s not loud enough or better: it lacks dynamics because it’s only 20 watts. And the effects loop works like a charm btw… At the other hand I completely agree with you about the new DSL series: They just sound awful. I would honestly recommend buying a 100W Plexi or any 2203 master volume amp and use it with an attenuator at home. That works perfectly and opens the gates to Marshall heaven. 🎇

Hey Marc, The SV20 is too loud as any other Plexi, so far so true. However the small enclosure and 5 watt mode suggest it’s usable for home use - and a lot of people fall for that trap, as you can see from my examples in the video. And yes I do agree - if you need an attenuator regardless, get the real deal and enjoy the sparkling cleans and high headroom crunch sounds you just don’t get from the SV20. 😉

Okay-ish. Think of it as a clone. A decent amp on its own, but it doesn’t sound and react to your playing like an old Jub. Check my last video and listen to the Jubilee sounds, see if you like them. If you do, probably better to look for an OG. That said; no 2 jubilees sound 100% the same. So I should rather answer the question like this: does it sound like my Jubilee? JCM 2000 DSL are different amps than the DSL. As a big fan of Marshall amps, I CHOOSE a JCM 2000 DSL 100w over any other I could've bought. It's the last year of production model. I tested it on my 4x12 UK greenbacks against the new DSL, JVM410, JCM 800 2203, JCM 900 SLX, and a 1959 SLP with master volume. I prefer the JCM 2000 DSL BY A LONG SHOT best amp of the bunch. Never had any issues with it, never had any drifting bias, overheating or anything. I heavily prefer it's reverb and red channel over the jvm and new dsl it sounds thicker and beefier. The green channel is very plexi like. JVM and the new DSL sound too brittle and plastic for my taste no matter how I dial them, TSL is even worse in that regard, reminds me of those JCM900s with reverb and jcm800 2205. SLX and 2203 are great sounding but they can do only one type of sound right, the 2000DSL is simply far more versitile, it's very similar to the SLX, a bit more modern sounding that the 2203. Plexi is an old school beast, it obviously lacks more gain stages, it's perfect at what it does, but it's not for me. Like the guy in the video said, you can dial SLX, 2203, Jubilee-ish, Plexi-ish tones with it and it simply sounds great if you pair it with the right cab and pickups. I've modded mine with a switchable C12 mod (works as a deep switch for the red channel), and a footswitchable red subchannel (So that I've got 3 footswitchable channels). Amazing amp, would never trade or sell it.

But Marshall will never bring them back because nobody is going to pay 20 watt studio series prices for a 1 watt, as rumour was Marshall never made much money on the anniversary amps at the original prices. But a JMP 1 watt when they pop up sells for about same as the 20 watt. I have a problem with cooking up all the tubes in a big amp just to plug it into an OxBox. It just seems silly. The Silver Jubilee is a very special beast in my opinion. I made the mistake, to buy the 2254 112 combo version in 1987 and was completely disappointed. Really was some sort of hate-love. Later I found out, that this amp first really needs a 412 cabinet or even a full stack to sound good (or at least a good 212 closed back) and second, despite of the Master Volume it has to be played really loud. Nevertheless it is not quite the right amp for typical Marshall Plexi sounds, rather some sort of hot-rodded JCM800. Much less bass, thinner, more scratchy treble than a 1959. Nice with a Les Paul, not so nice with a Strat or Tele. Guitar gear always is an interactive system, so there is a reason, why eg. Slash uses alnico II pickups instead of alnico V in combination with a Silver Jubilee (or later AFD). To reduce harshness and treble scatchiness. But with other amps these pickups also can sound too warm. Always depending on the combinations. A good, brutal and heavy sounding stage amp it is, if you like the sound, but hardly usable for home use without a power attenuator or load box. But these tools anyway are essential for any tube amp at home in my opinion. The new Harley Benton sounds surprisingly good and neutral for a resistive load, but a really good reactive load box still is a different league. Not cheap, but you anyway only need it once. Torpedo Captor disappointed me, became an instant return, as it did cut-off every low end and treble started sounding like the one of a transistor amp, which was not, what I had expected, so I decided for a much more expensive, but much more naturally sounding solution, also with a lot more other advantages. Even my (slightly modded) Killer Ant with 0.4 W is much too loud at home without a power attenuator. But meanwhile I prefer running it through my load box and some matching cabinet IR's anyway instead of using real cabinets and amplify the line signal through my computer monitors. If I still had the Silver Jubilee, I maybe replaced the V30 with a Hesu Demon or any other speaker with smoother treble (A Hempback on the other hand already may sound too smooth), which in principle also a 412 cabinet does, it dampens the (too intense) treble peaks and shrillness, a 112 usually does not. A 212 lies somewhere in between. Also tried Origins and Studios, did not convince me so much, especiall not the Origins. DSL‘s are good, if you look for hotter, modern high-gain Marshall sounds, as long as you do not use a JVM or JVM JS, but not so good for vintage sounds. 1959HW and JTM45 Reissue are good, also because you can nicely and easily mod them too, if you know, how. I preferred both over any Studio. But still my dream amp is a Metropoulos Metro-Plex. Meanwhile I have a JMP-1 preamp (more Plexi-voiced in my opinion) and an awesome, mostly as power amp only abused not-Marshall amp, which equally well works with 6V6, 6L6GC, 5881, EL34 or KT77 power amp tubes, plus stepless, perfectly well working 0.5 W to 40/50W power scaling, so I think, I meanwhile get almost any sound, I am looking for at almost any level.

@@joeyjooones Mine did unfortunately, only (too scratchy) treble, but hardly any mids and bass independent of the tone controls, and this even with turned down Presence. Whyever. Maybe a monday model, but Marshalls anyway always can sound very different, even if they are the same model, is at least my experience. I had to order it, so I could not test it before. (This had been the 1980's and such gear hardly had been available in any average musci store, at least not, where I lived. The amp had been higly praised in some guitar magazines, so I bought it. Later I preferred, to use a Crate Vintage Club instead, gave me more the sounds, I had been looking for at this time.) If I eg. use the Softube Silver Jubilee plugin, this pleases my ears much more and sounds much "beefier", smoother, more balanced and much better, than my own real Silver Jubilee ever did.
