The pba celebrity matches made bowling look like a carnival game yet it’s one of the more popular telecasts and does the best at attracting non bowlers to watch. Who cares how bowling looks. Non bowlers don’t complain about whether it’s on strings or not and they are the people we should be trying to attract to our sport.

When laminate replaced wood on the lanes, when oil was added to the lanes to preserve them, when reactive curve balls came out, when two-handed bowling was approved for tournaments, people complained. Now string pins, people complain. A few will stop bowling, but most avid bowlers will keep bowling. It's just too much fun.

@@dan-xe2xtIt’s not to attract people, they are simpler and less expensive to maintain than the heavy pinsetters. I’m not a fan either, but since my son bowls in two leagues, one at an alley with this new string pin setup, I can confirm there is a different look and feel, but it is close enough that the transition is manageable. Haven't bowled in quite some time (15+ years) and I went and got fitted with a new ball today and threw some games to test out my skills. Just like riding a bike after the first game of 158. Found my stance and arrows & shot 214, 226 & 203. But the interesting thing was this house was my house back in the day and they are now running string pins. It certainly does feel weird visually and they seem to not hit as hard (left quite a few flat 10's) but was still the fun I was looking for. It will be interesting to see how things progress regarding these string pins. From what I've seen, this is the way to save costs in maintenance and labor. Darren, you got such great form bro!

The muscle memory is there, but it takes a minute to remember the choreography. Welcome back to the sport! Just like 15 years has changed for ball technology, lane patterns and such, string pins (USBC Certified ones) will be non-noticeable for leagues/pros with a variance of 1-1.5 pins max. The first few variations of strings are wildly different than the newest ones (you probably seen plenty of old string pins videos from 1-2 years ago, that's how new the USBC Verified strings are, that 1-2 year old videos are old)

@@nevinkinzel Well if you want an exact tally I'll have to go back and watch it again, but I watched it to the end, and I'm comfortable estimating that there were at least 4-6 shots that displayed fundamentally bizarre pinfall that you would not see with free- fall. Way too much weirdness for such a small sample size of 2 games. Multiply that out over a league season and your average will be at the mercy of the fucking strings. Competitive bowling is about to be sacrificed on the altar of corporate greed. Once the majority of centers go this route, bowling will be taken about as seriously as skee ball or lawn darts.

@@dysfunctionaldave Lots of comments against string pins seem to be coming from those who don't like their look but who have never actually bowled on them. I've been bowling on string pins for the past 2 years and my average is 2-3 pins higher on the strings than on free fall pins. Definitely not a big deal. A good high flush hit will strike on either type of pins, but I would agree that a sloppy hit has a better chance of striking on free fall pins. On the other hand, a nasty split is easier to convert with string pins.

But you're okay with pins bouncing off the walls and curtain, right? What hits did you see in this video that were altered by the strings? The only one noticeable to me (though I was distracted while watching) was the shot where Darren almost had the pin move into the 8 slot. (Certified) String pins will require more accuracy. How is that a bad thing?

Ryan Shaffer was bowling a match and a messenger was heading for the pin and the string stopped it short. You could see the sudden stop.

@@nevinkinzelyeah we are ok with it, it’s called bowling….where more power and rotation, give you better pin action. Yep we like it the way it’s been, since pin boys….Id rather pay my son to set up pins for me than overpay a bowling alley to play an arcade game.

Loved the crinkly water bottle routine with Belmo and Rash. Not a fan of string pins, although that's where the leisure sport is going...hopefully not the pros. Free The Pins!!!

@@jonmayer That's like, your opinion man. USBC Strings have a statistically barely noticeable difference in scores from amateurs, pros, conditions, and robots. The current USBC study has proven that before certifying a specific set of strings. When did you try them out yourself?

@@kenkonarzewski9961 And who conducted this "study"? You DO know that the USBC is, effectively, owned by the BPAA, as in the bowling PROPRIETORS-aka OWNERS? Did you think the USBC headquarters moved from Green Bay to Arlington, TX just for the hell of it? You know what organization has had its HQ in Arlington for years, right? FIGURE IT OUT. This is the proverbial fox guarding the hen house...the USBC is a separate entity in name only-the BPAA calls the shots. And yes, when you change a FUNDAMENTAL part of the game/sport, it is no longer the same-PERIOD...wake up and smell what you're shoveling.

@@kenkonarzewski9961 I actually do have a bad experience with that kind of string pin technology in duckpin bowling. I rolled a strike one time, and the strings were having a hard time keeping the pins up upon resetting them, since a few of them keep falling down when they land on the lane. I'm not taking any chances in playing 10 pin bowling that has that string pin setup, because it might run into the same problem that the duckpin lane had. Plus, the unnatural pin action when you knock down the pins, and the fact that the strings could get tangled up if you add too much strength to your roll. That's why I considered String pin setups to be an abomination to bowling, because I've seen the problems with it first hand, and I'm not gonna take any chances in bowling in center that relies on string pins as a lazy way to cut costs.

Oh I hope not “japetto pins” you can manipulate the ropes throwing the ball harder they don’t give a correct read as a real lane. The center here that had beautiful lanes went more to the family center side and went the cheap route on the lanes and put in the rope pins. You can make the rope of the 3 pin hit ropes of 5678 pin which isn’t right.
