Piett was rather lucky as the Falcon escaping Vader's grasp should have been on Piett's head but Vader was too distracted by losing Luke that Vader forgot about him until Piett was able to redeem himself.
@lyianx
@lyianx Жыл бұрын
@@Redpoppy80 That wasnt it. I have a comment here explaining in more detail, but despite how it looked, Vader didnt just killed off his officers at a whim. Generally, everyone he killed he had a dislike for to begin with and in most of those cases, those people did not screw up just once. Vader even before this point had a dislike for Ozzel because he knew the kind of person he was. This last screw up was not his first, and Vader wanted a reason to get rid of him and place Peitt in command and he used this for that case. He actually liked Peitt and was responsible for him being on his ship in the first place. He might not have liked that the falcon got away, but as far as Vador goes, it was Piett's "first" mistake, and given how much it took for him to put Piett in that position, i dont think he was ready to place someone else in command. He also knew that unlike most imperial officers, Piett actually cared about the work, and not his career.

0:33 I love the way Vader cuts Veers off here, like he's saying: "No no, this is *_his_* fuck-up, don't try to explain things for him." He's basically telling Veers that he doesn't need to concern himself with trying to cover his own ass, since all of the blame is falling on Ozzel, his superior. Vader may be a ruthless taskmaster, but he's quite fair about holding people accountable when they're the ones giving the orders.

Believe me it's not excitement. He's that much closer to death-by-Vader's mysterious hand and he knows it. The Empire encourages ambition and grab opportunity and power by any means, but the price is you're more likely to die due to failure rather then a glorious battle. It's why the Empire fell after the Battle of Endor military-wise more then anything. The best officers were often killed for minor failures.

@pittland44 Жыл бұрын
You really get the sense that Vader respects Veers, which I absolutely love. It makes Vader more competent as a military commander, and thus more of a threat, if he himself respects his more competent and ferocious field commanders. It also makes Veers into a badass in about two seconds flat which carries over into the ensuing battle with the rebels. If Vader just randomly kills everyone who serves under him (which would be an easy assumption to make) then the empire has no rules or structure, and that makes them less of a threat because they would lose all competency within the organization quickly. Because Vader respects the officers that can pull their weight and do their jobs well (Tarkin, Veers, Piet, Jerjerod, etc.) it makes them more dangerous because it means that the empire doesn't tolerate incompetence, not failure. Case in point, Vader doesn't kill Piet when the Millenium Falcon jumps to hyperspace at the end of the movie. Instead, he just walks off and doesn't say anything, even though Piet expected to be killed. That would tell all of Vader's subordinates that while Vader might kill you for dropping the ball when it's your job, he doesn't hold it against you when it was something outside your control. Vader made sure the hyperdrive was deactivated, what he didn't count on was his old assistant R2-D2 being onboard to fix the disabled systems. He would know that wasn't Piet's fault, so he didn't kill Piet which would make Piet respect him even more. We actually see this when Vader tells Piet he'll take care of the shuttle himself in ROTJ. Piet figures, alright, he's got this under control, I'll just go back to work.

We learn a lot about Imperial morale and management tactics in just a few minutes. General Veers stood up for a fellow senior officer to try to convince Vader to give him benefit of the doubt. So he encourages teamwork and accountability, punishes incompetence, recognizes and promotes talent, and everyone who isn't killed keeps their eyes on the prize.

The problem is Vader wants every subordinate to follow his every command and he doesn't necessarily allow for ingenuity or independence among his subordinates unlike Admiral Thrawn who willingly accepts new ideas even if they weren't his own. Thrawn was known to promote ingenuity among his subordinates and forgive mistakes (or errors). Vader on the other hand, he thinks he knows best and so you obey his every command and know your place. If you screw up, well you know what can happen with Vader. That's not to say Vader is a bad commander, far from it as he's shown and known to be a very skilled tactician. But his style of command is very rigid and centralized, its 'inflexible' so to speak. Thrawn on the other hand, is brilliant and adaptable to any situation making him a much better commander.

My theory: I've come to realize that Piett is a much smarter man than many people give him credit for. When the reports from the Hoth probe droid came in, he knew Ozzel would dismiss them out of hand, so he didn't report its findings immediately. Instead, he waited until Vader was on the bridge and THEN delivered the report knowing that the Sith Lord would hear them. Sure enough, Ozzel blew him off, but Vader overrode him and ordered a course for Hoth. Vader knew Ozzel was an idiot, so he gave him just enough rope to hang himself. The botched lightspeed approach to Hoth was just the final nail in Ozzel's coffin. All orchestrated by Piett. I love it when a plan comes together, even if it's not mine! 😎👍

I am sorry but your comment gave off the allusion that Hitler was not as ruthless as the other vile Dictator in the east. If you believe that than you are gravely mistaken. Of course, they both are evil. They both are equally the pure essence of evil. Hitler was just as ruthless as Stalin, but What Hitler does that is better than Stalin is be able to quietly make those people disappear. Stalin, perhaps just did not know how obvious his regime was at executing citizens or perhaps he just did not care. You have to understand that Hitler was also against any surrenders or retreats during battles what so ever. His generals knew that if they surrendered or retreated than they would be replaced

Vader had every reason to choke Admiral Ozzel. 1) He's an arrogant shit who shot down Captain Piett's ACTUAL intel. 2) Admiral Ozzel screwed up the battle plan. The plan was to bring the fleet over orbit and bombard the Rebel base from space. But Ozzel screwed it up - he brought the fleet too close to the system that the Rebels were able to track the Imperial Fleet approaching with their sensors, and it gave them enough time to activate their shield generator, thus forcing the Imperials to do a surface attack, which is more costly in terms of resources and time.

I'd like to think the SS officers had this going on behind Adolf Hitler's back since he was having one general after another fired or tossed into concentration camps for f*cking up too often. "Hey, Hans, you think Von Rundstedt is going to be fired tomorrow?" "Ja! I bet you a hundred thousand Reichsmarks he'll get tossed out by then!" They shake hands and walk away, giggling like two schoolgirls, not knowing Adolf's buddy Heinrich overheard everything. Then the SS officers are hauled into his office where the following happens: Himmler "So Vogel and von Schmidt, you think one of you will be a hundred thousand Reichsmarks richer if Adolf has Gerd's head tomorrow?" Vogel: "Sorry, mein reichsfuehrer, what can I say?" Himmler (in a COLD voice): "I am disappointed you didn't tell me about this little betting pool. How many are in on this?" Vogel: "Um, nineteen, mein reichsfuehrer." Himmler: "Ok, I'll toss in fifty thousand Reichsmarks to make it a nice even twenty and regardless of whether that fool has a job tomorrow, I'll forget all about this." "Danke schon, mein reichsfuehrer!" The two snap the best stiff arm salute they can and stomp their feet to appease Himmler, who grins and dismisses them. Once they leave, he picks up the phone and snaps "Adolf! You better fire that asshole tomorrow or I'll be out fifty thousand Reichsmarks!"
