"But he asks the impossible. I need more men." That is my favourite line from their conversation. I love that Jerjerrod confided to Vader that he thought the Emperor was being unreasonable. It would seem Imperial officers are comfortable saying things about the Emperor to Vader that they wouldn't say to his face. I wonder what Vader's response would've been if the Emperor wasn't on his way oversee the construction. Vader might be harsh, but at least he's fair.

*_An open air hanger in the vacuum of space ? Doesn’t seem plausible_* An open air hangar in the vacuum of space, but sealed with a force shield? Very plausible, and extremely practical. Raising/lowering a shield to allow traffic in/out is much, much more efficient than cluttering the hangar bay with massive moving solid doors and the mechanisms to open/close them. In fact, how about this idea: A shield strong enough to trap pressurized gases, but weak enough to allow solid objects to pass through it. That way, no lowering/raising of shields is needed -- atmosphere stays trapped inside while allowing ships to pass in/out.
@Sherpaful

@#sloths the empire has so many fans because it’s so well written. It doesn’t feel like a purely evil government, the evil is believable because many of the villains are people in positions of power or authority, and it makes sense for military officers to be strict and instill fear into their subordinates. But this level also helps us relate to the imperials. They’re doing a job, and they have bosses, just like us. It feels like an actual, real military system. The sequels and even the prequels failed to acknowledge proper military organization within Star Wars.

Has anyone else noticed that the officer is actually having a conversation with Vader. He had the confidence to be honest with Vader that in order to meet the time tables he needed more resources. That suggests that he wasn't afraid to speak his mind and that Darth Vader actually did listen to his subordinates. There's also the case when the Millennium Falcon escapes and the Admiral on the Star Destroyer gets all nervous because he doesn't know how Vader will respond but Vader just walks off. That suggests that Vader didn't necessarily punish people for things that were outside of their control. Like he was somewhat Fair? If you were competent and you did your job, you didn't have to worry. But if you were incompetent you might get Force gripped to death. The emperor on the other hand, he is just a dick across the board.

I remember that scene from "The Empire Strikes Back". I think Vader just walked off because his son, Luke Skywalker, didn't join him and got away from him. At that point, i don't think Vader felt any gumption to punish the officer that may had let him escape. Vader may have been to distraught over his son getting away and not joining him.

in Episode 4, Vader HAD to obey Tarkin. You see that in the opening scene when he is force choking that one guy and Tarkin says "Vader! Enough!!!" And Vader stops. @@vxy357 Although I agree that at the end of Empire Strikes Back, Vader was literally too dumbstruck to do anything as he watched the Falcon - and Luke - slip away, I'm sure that he would not have blamed Admiral Piett anyway. After all, the two of them had already just spoken. Piett had done everything that Vader had told him to do, and made it clear that he was obeying his every command. He made sure the Falcon's hyperdrive was disabled and was seconds away from scooping it up in a tractor beam, putting it in a hangar, and sending in a boarding party. The only reason the Falcon escaped was because R2 was there to turn the hyperdrive back on in time.

What I like most about this scene is how it sets up how very little power Darth Vader has compared to Palpatine. He has a grand entrance, the music swells, and people are in general fear of his presence. They have been all trilogy. But when the emperor shows up, he's got guards, a larger TIE escort, his entrance is easily 3 times larger than Vader's, and the man we've come to known as the deadliest villain in the galaxy for 2 films kneels to him. That's effective character development. With these two scenes alone the viewer immediately understands how much of a threat Palpatine is.

This scene is absolutely masterful. After seeing a clip from the Rise of Skywalker - I had to come back here to remind myself of the Star Wars that I remember. There are so many parts to this scene that works. For instance: - The mysterious beginning, and the lead up to Darth Vader coming off the shuttle. By holding off for a minute or two, the filmmakers manage to build up the tension a little till the Reveal - and what a reveal it was! Darth Vader walking down the ramp was very memorable - The nervous Commander resonates with all of us who had to deal with bosses, project management, deadlines, and most of all pressure. The Empire wants results, we can tell immediately that fatal pressure is relentless. In the new Sequels, there is nothing of this, all 'bad guys' are crazy maniacs. However here, you get the sense the Empire is a system - a system of conformity, pressure and hierarchy. - Note how at the end, they even chose the Commander to not continue walking with Darth Vader, but to turn and head the other way. This distinguishes further how Darth Vader is superior, off to get results, and the Commander is pondering what to do, when to do it, with conflicting priorities. He has all the weight of the world on his shoulders. Darth Vader doesn't care. - There is also a seriousness to the sequence. There is a sense of procedure, with the Shuttle Docking sequence, of paranoia and importance with the TIE Fighter escort, and of hastily assembled ceremony, with the troops rushing out to present to their commanding officer. These all contribute to the amazing world that is built up here. Again, this 3 minute clip says so much, even looking beyond the script.

This scene perfectly establishes the Emperor as a character to fear. While Jerjerodd might be willing to talk back to Vader, as soon as the Emperor is brought into this, he IMMEDIATELY backs down and promises to double his efforts. Plus, Vader lets him know that it will NOT end well if the Emperor is dissatisfied with the progress.

Imagine how bad the emperor is
@Conservative4
@Conservative4 3 жыл бұрын
So I’ve been thinking about that. Think about the people that Vader force-choked (that we know of). The admiral from the first movie openly challenged him verbally and arrogantly mocked his results and abilities. Admiral Ozzel disobeyed key tactical orders, and seemed complacent. Other context clues show that js not the first time Ozzel disobeyed him. Director Krennec, if we want to include him, was a sniveling coward who wanted to be “in command” and his ambitions far outweighed his skill. So when Vader chokes a guy, we can see why he thinks they deserve it. Now this commander does *nothing* to challenge Vader- he walks the knife’s edge of telling him the truth as he sees it, “I assure you my men are working as fast as they can.” And telling hos boss what they want to hear while being dedicated “I tell you this station will be operational as planned.” He is a bit afraid, clearly, but not for no reason and clearly tries to stand his ground. I think Vader himself has no problem with the commander. It is the emperor who is displeased by the slightest inconvenience, no matter how reasonable or predictable. It is the emperor who unleashes Vader at will. It is the Emperor who thinks “I need to be able to kill more people, faster. I need a weapon that does that. And I’ll work my own people to death to build it.”

This is how Steve Jobs conducted product team reviews. He always entered the meeting room with the Imperial March blaring.

Revisiting these movies is kind of humorous because for as much as Vader is hyped and portrayed as an ultimate badass, it never really dawned on me before just how reasonable he actually was to his subordinates so long as they weren't incompetent or dismissive of the Force.

Sound like a typical Christian nut. Thank fuck I don't see Vader differently now.

True. I think the only officer I felt bad for was Captain Needa. He took responsibility for the Falcon miraculously disappearing. Everyone else was a moron or disrespectful.

It's scary to think that the emperor is not as forgiving as Vader and Vader is one cruel man

Funny thing is that the emperor doesn't seem to give a shit about the construction of the Death Star as long as the super laser works later on in the movie.

Vader only did this to make him crap his pants. The Emperor didn't even adress that at all and Jerjerrod was all fine when he arrived. While I can imagine he grew a bit imtatient though. After all he needed the Death Star to travel safely through the Unknown Regions.
