Another great video, last time i was on Dartmoor was the hot summer of 1976, doing military training, came back with a great sun tan. I remember looking down on Dartmoor prison, what a dark miserable place it looked.

Thanks Abbie. Fascinating. I think of Dartmoor as being a bleak, wet, windswept place and I suppose it is often that way so it's really interesting to see it dry and sunny and not many people. Good map reading skills definitely a bonus as always as signs cannot be relied upon.

A really wonderful video Abbie. I hope you don't mind me saying. You have a Gimbal in this one which is working. But in your Coast to Coast video you seem to be holding a Gimbal but it didn't work. Not sure if you noticed ? Lol. I know you've got a lot to think about each day with anxiety. So I hope you don't mind me bringing this up.

Abbie, another fabulous walk and video. I'm totally addicted to your blogs!!! Tell me, please, of all the long distance trails you've done in the UK, apart from the GGW -that I've already done- and the C2C -that I'm doing next June- which one would be at the top of your list? I have 10 days holidays in October and I want to do them all! :)

Hi Abbie, really enjoying the videos, have you ever done Geocaching? It's a great way to find new trails and something else to do whilst you're in the wild! (Loads of videos of it on KZbin) If anyone hasn't heard of it, its basically using your GPS to find hidden containers all over the world! Thanks, Max

Why don't they grow some trees on it? It looks so barren. Sure the soil is fertile.
@easternmenace
@easternmenace 5 жыл бұрын
Because it's a habitat, an ecosystem of its own. We don't tend to go around changing entire habitats because they look barren. Anyway if there were trees they would get in the way of the view lol
@curiousnomadic
@curiousnomadic 5 жыл бұрын
But as Abby said it had been changed to BE barren by poor farming and grazing practices. Before industrial times it was forested so time to restore it. The habitat is that of the lack of habitat.
@easternmenace
@easternmenace 5 жыл бұрын
True but how many years has it been since that? It's a different habitat now
@niels.brouwer
@niels.brouwer 5 жыл бұрын
The landscaped was cleared of trees mostly back in the neolithic and early bronze age, as much as 5000 years ago. Most areas were cleared with fire to make way for agriculture and grazing livestock. The climate was completely different back then, much warmer than it is now. Since then, the climate has changed naturally, resulting in a completely different habitat. The acidic soil was no longer suitable for agriculture and gradually changed into the vast expanse of moorland with a valuable ecology. The peat deposits absorb the large amount of annual rain and host a lot of very special flora and fauna. The views are so much more stunning than when they would have been restricted by trees. In my opinion, this has so much more value than the monotonous and mostly lifeless forestry plantations of dense pine that you see elsewhere. Asking why they don't cram it full of trees again completely disregards the merits this special landscape has to offer.
@easternmenace
@easternmenace 5 жыл бұрын
Yep and also when they replant forests now most of the time it's for logging and it's just spruce. Neat, tight rows of spruce that don't look natural and don't have much of other flora in them because all the light gets blocked out. Sure we could try and replant a forest but we would have to find trees that actually grow on this soil, most likely trees that weren't the kind that originally grew there. But now you are changing the habitat again so what's the point, it's beautiful in its own way.
