Action video aboard the footplate of GWR King Class 4-6-0 6023 King Edward II. Driver Andy and Fireman Jack work hard on the 12.10 hrs Kingswear to Paignton service. I like a tender first trip. Superb.

There's so much to see in the footplate footage. The Dean/Churchward backhead arrangement has never been bettered, and in many designs (e.g. BR Standards) made much harder for the crew, with left hand drive, and horrible regulator/screw reverser. Dean and Churchward actually thought seriously about the ergonomics - 120 years ago! See how easy it is for a right-handed driver to operate the screw reverser without back strain, while at the same time working the brake. And the lovely long regulator handle with its balance weight. Note easy pumping action when getting the loco moving. Also, the right handed fireman finds it much easier firing from the left of the cab, and doesn't get in the driver's way. I love the firing sequence, two back left, two back right, more down the hill, looking under the shovel to inspect the fire, each blast pulling up the fire, the flap going up, the billy can above the firedoor. Just really brilliant. Thank you!

The Driver and Fireman agree with you.

On the GN and LNER we all shovelled from the rh side as the Driver was on the LH side of the engine, where the signals were. The GN was also the Premier railway and was the fastest to the North. These guy's are only playing trains. I bet the Drver here does not know why he has a shiny top to his cap! I do.

Nice footplating and awesome locomotive. Is there any rule of showing alright signals or any flags. Means no flag alrights from Guard. I want to know how train starts and stops on specific rule.
@TrainsBoatsPlanes4 жыл бұрын
Signals are the responsibility of the Driver. The "Right Away" from stations is given by the Guard.

Why wasn’t the fire box filled to the brim in true GWR spirits?
@mattseymour86375 жыл бұрын
It may because on a line like this with only 6 or 7 coaches using a loco designed to pull 15-20 coaches on gradients you won't need a big fire

Wonder what the valve setting is at 7.17 when the driver fully opened the regulator without slipping from starting off?

Trains, Boats, Planes For most people that’s what they want just the ride. It’s a pity more heritage lines don’t do the same.
