The human kind is able to overturn entire ecosystems in a short time and the effects of its passage are often negative. But from the ability to adapt to new realities of some species we can understand a lot about nature and its unique strength to change and evolve consequently adapting to the artificial transformations caused by mankind. Nature has a strong resilience that goes over human action.

Ma dalla capacità di adattamento alle nuove realtà di alcune specie animali, possiamo comprendere molto sulla natura e sulla sua forza unica di cambiare ed evolversi adattandosi di conseguenza alle trasformazioni artificiali indotte dall'uomo. La Natura ha una grande capacità di resilienza che va oltre l'azione umana. Dutch biologist and evolutionist, he is a researcher at the Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leida and a professor of character evolution and biodiversity at the University of Leiden, Netherlands. Menno will take us around the world for a closer look at the way natural selection is extraordinary flexible and fast-moving. His researches show how the effects of evolution are mostly visible in the cities.

I don’t know if I’m prepared to accept that rapid phenotypical changes are taking place just because a handful of organisms appear to be thriving in urban areas. I fear that in the long run, most organisms will not be able to adapt to living off our detritus in place of the lower trophic levels upon which they learned to rely on over many thousands of years.
